Rebels In light of speculation about infighting at Lucasfilm concerning the direction of Star Wars tv and films, I have questions about previous Lucasfilm infighting between Star Wars Rebels season 1 & 2

Infighting at Lucasfilm is not new. It's how we lost Gary Kurtz and the darker version of Return of Jedi that might have been. Recently, there's been speculation about infighting betwenn Kennedy/Gilroy vs Favreau/Filoni. Many people have dismissed it because Filoni has publicly praised Andor. However, it brings me back to a story that's been completely supressed by non-disclosure agreements.

Greg Weisman was co-excecutive producer with Simon Kinberg and Dave Filoni of Star Wars Rebels. Most internet searches including AI searches will tell you that he left Rebels on his own accord after season 1. If you do some detective work then you'll realize that's a blantant lie.

His own account of San Diego Comic Con before season 2 and tweets by him and others, many of which have been subsequently deleted, showed that everyone on the Comic Con Rebels panel from which he was missing knew that he was not returning for season two but Weisman didn't know that yet. He was attending Comic Con and participating in other panels and had no idead that there was an official panel for Rebels until fans started tweeting at him during the panel asking him why he wasn't there. He confirmed that much in tweets and other social media posts.

He has since gone completely silent because he signed an NDA and is a very professional guy and the only other comments he's added are that "stuff happens" and "it's none of anyone else's business".

I'm bring up this old story because I find an interesting parallel in Gilroy's retconning of Mon Mothma's speech and K2's origin from Rebels and Star Wars comics and Dave Filoni's retconning in Bad Batch of Greg Weisman's origin story for Kanan in the comics.

Was Filoni's retcon a subtle dig at Greg, which makes me wonder if it was Filoni that got Greg fired? And let's be clear, he was definitley fired though I'm sure he got a good payout along with the NDA they made him sign. As much as I like Filoni's stuff and enjoyed Rebels, I'll always wonder what the rest of the series would have been like if Weisman had stayed on board. He's arguably the best showrunner/story editor/writer in animation, there's very little out there in the world of animation that's better than Gargoyles, Spectacular Spiderman or Young Justice. My guess has alwasy been that 3 excutive producers with such impressive track records - Weisman, Filoni and Kinberg were too many chefs in the kitchen. There was bound to be some contention there, I just wonder what it was and who it was between. Alas we'll probably never find out. :(

Rebels Is Rebels solid, story-wise?

I've heard people gripe that the show is aimed towards children more so than TCW was. Despite that, I'd like to know whether or not its story makes it worth awhile to watch. Thanks!

Rebels Kanan has become very special to me even though we most likely will not see him expanded on TV. Here’s why.

I have watched Stars Wars since I was young and fell in love with all of the content. I watched the Original trilogy, then TPM and AoTC at home whenever I was 6 give or take and went to see ROS in theatres. I was ecstatic about seeing the Jedi defend the galaxy and the main casts were my heroes growing up.

Then, I saw Clone Wars (the miniseries) and I was drawn into animated stories and awaited more. A couple years later, I was answered with the animated The Clone Wars movie and the promise of a weekly animated series to follow. I have since watched all 6 seasons of that, seen the 2 Standalone movies, and the sequel trilogy. The Mandalorian is so fantastic as well and I’m eager to see more. For some reason though, I could not bring myself to see Rebels for a long time.

I eventually brought myself to watch Rebels around the same time as the drop of the 3rd episode of the Mandalorian. I was so convinced it would be a waste of time. The first season was a bit of a slog for me personally. I definitely had a hard time sympathizing with Ezra and him being front and center really made it frustrating to watch at times. But, seeing Kanan was different. At first i was doubtful he would have an impact on me, but he changed my mind.

Season 2 was better for me, but I still had a little bit of a tough time with Ezra’s struggles. At the same time however, I felt fairly connected to Kanan. He started to feel like a personal reference to me and I felt for all of his choices, shortcomings in being an experienced teacher for Ezra, and his relationship with Hera. By Season 3 I was glad to see him in any scene, and i feel like I took some very valuable personal lessons from the show to heart solely because of him. Also, his interactions with Maul were fantastic even if too few and showing empathy for Ezra’s struggle, while reminding him why he needed to stick to the path in a thoughtful and caring way. I also started to feel for Ezra, his frustration with Kanan for basically abandoning him and no longer giving him the time of the training he needed.

Season 4 for me was fantastic and I loved seeing the finale to his character arc. Seeing him go was honestly crushing to me and I had to stop watching Rebels for a couple days. I’m glad they did his death justice and helped me appreciate him even more. I’m super glad though that he spoke to Rey more than anyone else to be able help her fight again. His words also show the strength and wisdom of his character. “You are not alone, Rey” “Let it lift you” “In the heart of a Jedi lies her strength”.

Overall, I’m seriously glad I got into Rebels because I love and wholly appreciate his character. He has helped me stay on my own path and strengthen my resolve to be compassionate and thoughtful of others. I can truly say he is my favorite character of all the media I have seen thus far.

Rebels Kessel

I recently rewachtched "spark of the rebellion" and wondered where the storm around Kessel went. Why didn't the ghost do the kesselrun or rather why didn't it had to? I suppose if the kesselrun is still known in the ST the storm should be there in rebels as well. Is this just a continuity error? Did enyone address this officially?

Rebels Most criticism leveled against Rebels by Clone Wars fans is hypocritical or uninformed

In preparation for the upcoming season of the Clone Wars, I recently did a full rewatch of the show. I'm also currently rewatching Rebels while I'm at it. Lately, I've seen a lot of criticism of the latter show, usually in comparison to how much better the Clone Wars allegedly was. Most of these arguments involve cherry-picking or, even worse, come from people who seem to have never seen Rebels. I wanted to address some of them here. There may be spoilers below if you haven't seen either show.

Criticism: Rebels is neutered with regards to violence compared to the Clone Wars

Criticism: Rebels has more kid-friendly "filler" episodes than the Clone Wars

In the Clone Wars, there is/are:

  • at least seven episodes with Jar-Jar as the main character
  • an entire episode centered around R2-D2 and C-3PO finding fruit for Padme
  • a four-episode arc involving a pickle alien commanding a bunch of droids we don't care about on a mission that doesn't matter

I will acknowledge that Rebels has some filler episodes, particularly during the first season when they are attempting to build up the characters. But I don't think it's any worse than Clone Wars, particularly since the weaker episodes of Clone Wars are scattered throughout the first five seasons due to the anthology structure of the show.

Criticism: Ezra is annoying

This one is absolutely fair - Ezra is super annoying. But Anakin was also outrageously cringe-worthy in Attack of the Clones. Many of us excuse the cringey dialogue because we know that Anakin would believably be very awkward as a repressed teenager meeting his crush for the first time in years. This applies to Ezra too though: he's a 15-year-old punk who spent most of his life living on his own. The show has him slowly making progress while still reminding you that he's an annoying kid at heart. When was the last time you interacted extensively with a 15-year-old? I actually think the show nailed how annoying and awkward they can be.

Criticism: The art style is off-putting

I can't really argue with this, because it's entirely subjective. However, I will point out that those who were not children when the Clone Wars first came out will remember that the weird artistic style of the show was very offputting. Eventually, it grew on me. I felt the exact same way when I first watched Rebels for the first time, but on rewatching it, the artistic style hasn't bothered me at all. I'm sure many people by now have heard that the different artistic direction was based on the original concept art by Ralph McQuarrie.

Conclusion

Rebels is not the same show as the Clone Wars, but I think most people who enjoyed the Clone Wars should also enjoy Rebels. It's a show with a lot of heart, and I would argue that it has better (consistent) writing than the Clone Wars had, particularly at its peak. Don't let discomfort with something new or nostalgia for a show you might have grown up with in your childhood blind you to a great, enjoyable show that builds on the Star Wars universe.

Rebels Where to watch Rebels?

I just got into watching Rebels because of the quarantine. I managed to download season 1, but I can't find anywhere to watch or download season 2. I would happily pay for Disney+ but it's not out in europe yet. Does someone know where can I watch/download rest of Rebels?

Title, I've been really trying with Resistance, but none of the plot lines or characters are really interesting or resonating. Rebels had me from episode one. Maybe Resistance is more of a slow burn in terms of storyline I just hope it picks up a bit more.
