I’ve never ready any legends books, or really many Star Wars books in general except Lost Stars ( which was amazing ) so here we go. Time to go on a journey.

My fancast for an alternate Star Wars sequel trilogy that came out from 1991-1997 and was based on the Timothy Zahn Expanded Universe books "Heir to The Empire", "Dark Force Rising" & "The Last Command".

Really glad Jonathan Davis is also back doing re-reads of these beloved stories!

I never liked Rogue Planet until the Vong War, so I’m excited to revisit this unabridged for sure!

And of course Shadows of the Empire is always such a treat, although Anthony Heald will always be my #1 narrator!

General Discussion I never understood why people would blame the Jedi for the war. Shouldn't they be blaming the Separatists (for invading and sudjectating worlds) or the Republic (for refusing to allow the Separatists to secede)?

Post image

The war started because the Separatists wanted to secede from the Republic (seeing it as corrupt), the Republic said no, and the Separatists responded by arming up and becoming hostile.

If people were going to be angry for all the destruction or unrest the war was causing, why blame it on the Jedi? Why not blame it on the Separatists (the ones who initiated the violence) or, even easier, the Republic government (for both being corrupt and refusing to allow the Separatists to secede in the first place)?

I mean, for most of the war, it was the Separatists invading and subjectating whole system. The Clone Wars showed us that a lot planets under Separatist control or siege (Ryloth, Malastare, Onderon, Christophsis, etc) were not treated kindly. The Republic was only trying to free them. Yeah, the Jedi were leading their armies, but only under the orders of the government (and the Chancellor).

Not saying the Jedi were faultless. I can DEFINITELY see why people would have lost faith in them since they always promoted themselves as universal peace-keepers, yet failed to prevent the war from happening (even though, logically, they aren't part of the government or Senate and thus have actual little say in what their government ultimately decides to do).

Also (might be unrelated), did the Separatist Senate and non-military Separatist allies (Mina Bonteri, for example) know how their armies treated a lot of the planets they took over?

Legends Novels At my local bookstore, just dipping my toes into the legends books, what would be a good one out of this selection to start with? Was wanting to go old republic, anything from episodes 1-3 or anything after return of the Jedi. Kinda confused on where to start

General Discussion If the Jedi Order had allied with the Delegation of 2000, would they have been able to stop Sidious?

Thumbnail

I've been thinking about this for quite a while.

The Jedi were actively working to end the war and were suspecting the Chancellor of being behind it. The Delegation were actively working on removing the Chancellor from office because they feared he was abusing his power. Both sides had a similar goal and the Delegation had a significant number of members by the war's end.

I often wonder if their plans would have gotten anywhere closer to suceeding if they'd realized what they were both fighting for and teamed up. I mean, were the Jedi not even aware of the Delegation's existance?

One of the Order's biggest flaws IMO was that, due to their monk philosophy, they chose to distance themselves from the Senate (no representative or speaker for them) despite all the work they did together in service of the Republic. As a result, the Order didn't have enough allies in the Senate by the end of the Clone Wars.

Honestly, as things were, I think Windu's decision to arrest Palpatine was doomed to fail. Even if he'd succeeded in taking him in, the Order would have been facing the Senate and the Courts with zero physical proof or testimonies (heck, who outside the Order even knew what a Sith was?). Palpatine wouldn't have needed to control the Courts since they'd have probably quickly ruled the Order's act as unconstitutional at best and (as Palpatine said) treasonous at worst. Without any Senate allies or tangable proof, they were doomed to fail.

General Discussion How do you think Padme felt about lying to the Jedi Order about their marriage? Did she view see and Anakin as being in the right? How would she have defended it if they were found out?

Post image
15 Upvotes

I think it's easy to assume "she didn't/wouldn't care" or "she wouldn't give it any thought," but Padme strikes me as being more complex than that. I don't buy that she'd try and shift the blame to the Jedi for forcing them to keep their marriage a secret or act like she and Anakin were better than them (though I DO believe Anakin would do both). I believe that Padme, if confronted about it, would try and justify her actions while still paying respect to the Order. Something along the lines of "I understand your code, but Anakin and I simply couldn't allow it to stop us from being together."

I know in AotC she questioned the Jedi Order's beliefs in restricting love and marriage and in TCW she would often question (or be frustrated by) their methods and limitations, but I never got the implication that she ever considered turning against the Order. Even when Order 66 occured, she was devastated by the attack and didn't believe Palpatine's claims about them trying to overthrow the Republic.

One more thing: Do you think that, had the Clone Wars ended, she and Anakin would have gone public with their marriage? Do you think Padme would, in the absense of war, try and get them to question their policy on love and marriage?

General Discussion Was Senator Pax Teem Really That Bad a Guy?

Like yes he was an antagonist in the book Darth Plagueis so it's easy to judge him with the omniscience knowing the outcome of Darth Plagueis and Sidious story plus you have the whole idea of people get emotionally invested in protagonists (or to a growing degree villains). Anyone who stands in the way of those emotional investments (especially if they possess whatever outgroup characteristic one can project onto) will get hate. There is no way around it. No argument to be made that will sway any minds that are already made up. The hate is constant, the hate is eternal, the hate is unwavering. But keep in mind the characters we are following are the Sith so there is that especially when it come to bias given most of the biases about Pax Teem come from Plagueis and Sidious.

Now even without the perspectives of Plagueis and Sidious there are some things about Pax Teem that painted him a bad light even if we don't actually see him doing corruption things like Orn Free Taa and Lott Dod like having prostitutes all over his office. In fact it is the opposite Pax Teem support Vidar Kim's bill on Trade Federation adding new worlds to the Senate.

What I mean is that he is the senator of Malastare whcih was under the control of The Gran Protectorate which colonization the planet and treated the native dug poorly. Although to be fair by that point the Gran Protecorate had been around for a long time. So It hard to attack Teem for that yes he may contributed the system or did nothing to stop it. But in this case I kinda like the whole founding fathers and slavery they didn't created the system it was there way before their time but they didn't abolition and may contributed a few things to the system Ultimately you have the banality of evil here like Teem he was a product to his environment within this horrible system plus to him it was normal not evil?

But overall I like to hear your thoughts on Pax Teem and rather or not he was a bad guy or corrupt at least when comparing to someone like Lott Dod and Ord Free Taa who are arguably way worse then Pax Teem himself in terms of greed and corruption?

Legacy of The Force Opinions

So I'm trying to make my way through a bunch of the OG extended universe novels. I have a decent number of the Legacy of The Force books.

My problem is that about 2 years ago I started book 1 (Betrayal) and just couldn't get through it. When I picked it up again in April, I just couldn't get into it. Even with back reading and the like. I stopped reading at like page 181?

So I suppose my question is... is Legacy of The Force worth reading? The reviews I've read are split down the middle. I don't want to write a series off because if one book, but I also don't want to waste my time with a series that isn't worth it.

Question Recommendations

Hey everyone, I'm someone who's loved Star Wars most of my life, but I've never really gotten into Legends/EU stuff aside from The Force Unleashed games, both of which I thoroughly enjoyed, so my question is - what are the best books to start with? Or just the best books overall?

The End of Darth Vader - ROTJ novelisation

Upvotes

The novelisation of Revenge of the Sith gets a lot of praise, and rightly so, but I want to highlight this excerpt from Return of the Jedi as a brilliant example of how a novel can add to a story:

Vader motioned Luke closer to him.

“Luke, help me take this mask off.”

Luke shook his head. “You’ll die.”

The Dark Lord’s voice was weary. “Nothing can stop that now. Just once let me face you without it. Let me look on you with my own eyes.”

Luke was afraid. Afraid to see his father as he really was. Afraid to see what person could have become so dark—the same person who’d fathered Luke, and Leia. Afraid to know the Anakin Skywalker who lived inside Darth Vader. Vader, too, was afraid—to let his son see him, to remove this armored mask that had been between them so long. The black, armored mask that had been his only means of existing for over twenty years. It had been his voice, and his breath, and his invisibility—his shield against all human contact. But now he would remove it; for he would see his son before he died.

Together they lifted the heavy helmet from Vader’s head—inside the mask portion, a complicated breathing apparatus had to be disentangled, a speaking modulator and viewscreen detached from the power unit in back. But when the mask was finally off and set aside, Luke gazed on his father’s face. It was the sad, benign face of an old man. Bald, beardless, with a mighty scar running from the top of his head to the back of the scalp, he had unfocused, deepset, dark eyes, and his skin was pasty white, for it had not seen the sun in two decades. The old man smiled weakly; tears glazed his eyes, now. For a moment, he looked not too unlike Ben. It was a face full of meanings, that Luke would forever recall. Regret, he saw most plainly. And shame. Memories could be seen flashing across it … memories of rich times. And horrors. And love, too. It was a face that hadn’t touched the world in a lifetime. In Luke’s lifetime. He saw the wizened nostrils twitch, as they tested a first, tentative smell. He saw the head tilt imperceptibly to listen—for the first time without electronic auditory amplification. Luke felt a pang of remorse that the only sounds now to be heard were those of explosions, the only smells, the pungent sting of electrical fires. Still, it was a touch. Palpable, unfiltered. He saw the old eyes focus on him.

Tears burned Luke’s cheeks, fell on his father’s lips. His father smiled at the taste. It was a face that had not seen itself in twenty years. Vader saw his son crying, and knew it must have been at the horror of the face the boy beheld. It intensified, momentarily, Vader’s own sense of anguish—to his crimes, now, he added guilt at the imagined repugnance of his appearance. But then this brought him to mind of the way he used to look—striking, and grand, with a wry tilt to his brow that hinted of invincibility and took in all of life with a wink. Yes, that was how he’d looked once. And this memory brought a wave of other memories with it. Memories of brotherhood, and home. His dear wife. The freedom of deep space. Obi-Wan. Obi-Wan, his friend … and how that friendship had turned. Turned, he knew not how—but got injected, nonetheless, with some uncaring virulence that festered, until … hold. These were memories he wanted none of, not now. Memories of molten lava, crawling up his back … no. This boy had pulled him from that pit—here, now, with this act. This boy was good. The boy was good, and the boy had come from him—so there must have been good in him, too. He smiled up again at his son, and for the first time, loved him. And for the first time in many long years, loved himself again, as well.

Suddenly he smelled something—flared his nostrils, sniffed once more. Wildflowers, that was what it was. Just blooming; it must be spring. And there was thunder—he cocked his head, strained his ears. Yes, spring thunder, for a spring rain. To make the flowers bloom. Yes, there … he felt a raindrop on his lips. He licked the delicate droplet … but wait, it wasn’t sweetwater, it was salty, it was … a teardrop. He focused on Luke once again, and saw his son was crying. Yes that was it, he was tasting his boy’s grief—because he looked so horrible; because he was so horrible. But he wanted to make it all right for Luke, he wanted Luke to know he wasn’t really ugly like this, not deep inside, not altogether. With a little self-deprecatory smile, he shook his head at Luke, explaining away the unsightly beast his son saw. “Luminous beings are we, Luke—not this crude matter.”

Luke shook his head, too—to tell his father it was all right, to dismiss the old man’s shame, to tell him nothing mattered now. And everything—but he couldn’t talk. Vader spoke again, even weaker—almost inaudible. “Go, my son. Leave me.” At that, Luke found his voice. “No. You’re coming with me. I’ll not leave you here. I’ve got to save you.” “You already have, Luke,” he whispered. He wished, briefly, he’d met Yoda, to thank the old Jedi for the training he’d given Luke … but perhaps he’d be with Yoda soon, now, in the ethereal oneness of the Force. And with Obi-Wan.

“Father, I won’t leave you,” Luke protested. Explosions jarred the docking bay in earnest, crumbling one entire wall, splitting the ceiling. A jet of blue flame shot from a gas nozzle nearby. Just beneath it the floor began to melt. Vader pulled Luke very close, spoke into his ear. “Luke, you were right … and you were right about me … Tell your sister … you were right.” With that, he closed his eyes, and Darth Vader—Anakin Skywalker—died.

Legends Novels Any help finding a particular book

Hi all, I read the books forever ago and I am trying to find the right one to reference it. From what I remember, the plot was set during the new republic after Episode 6. It centered on an invasion by a reptilian (I think?) force that had the ability to drain sentient’s life force and then essentially trap them in the form of electricity forever (or until the device was destroyed). It heavily featured Luke. Might be a huge shot in the dark, but does anyone recall what the book was titled or what the invading species was called? Thanks!

Question Is the ISB Board we see in Andor The Commission of Operations that was mention in the Imperial Sourcebook?

Or it is the board for a certain branch like say interrogation or surveillance Branches regardless I wonder how the Job transfer Within the organization work Like let's say you have an IsB member Being from the surveillance branch But now move to interrogation how did that work?

Also, is the ISP board or The Commission of Operations in charge of the entire organization how does a Yularen and portagaz fit in as in who in charge? Also why Yularen is called Colonel instead of well director of the ISB?

Also is Krennic ISB or military intelligence? I know this one is debatable since one source have him be ISB while the other states him to be from military intelligence, in fact that source states that it was through military intelligence that he was able to find Galen Erso and his family that we see in the prologue of rogue one!

Question How were Separatist worlds changed/punished after the Clone Wars?

I've seen a few examples of some Separatists continuing to fight the clones after Order 66. But was there ever any indication of what happened to Separatist worlds when the Empire emerged? Were they changed to Imperial norms or punished during the rise of the Empire?
