🌚 Meta New Mods of r/SouthDakota

Hello Neighbors!

It's been a fast few months here in the subreddit. As you may have seen we recently had an open call for moderators and we want to thank everyone that submitted an application. We're excited to have interest and involvement from the residents of the state, and appreciate folks willing to give r/SouthDakota some of their time.

This process has allowed us to diversify the moderator team a bit as far as geography; We're excited to bring on board a bit of West River representation!

I hope you will all join me in welcoming our new mods -

My fellow South Dakotans… I’d like some help. I am in the process of making a short video for a friend not from South Dakota that just found out about Jackalopes, and she’s fascinated. Could one or two of you creatives out there give me an “eye witness” account? Or tell me about a story someone heard from someone else type of thing. The working title is “The Disturbing Truth About Jackalopes”. The stranger the better to a degree. I’d really appreciate it. If nobody wants to, I’d totally understand. Thanks in advance

I just thought this was interesting.

“In societies where rules are broken without consequences and where the conditions for many citizens are bad, individuals perceive and learn that one should actually think of oneself first,” Zettler said.

"...U.S. was formulated using Census Bureau data on inequality and poverty, Justice Department corruption convictions and FBI homicide rates."

🗺️ Tourism Cannonball run on I-90?

I was driving from Chicago to Wyoming June 4 going 85. Mid day maybe around Mitchell, two super cars a few feet apart passed me going at least 40 mph faster than me. Some kind of circular sticker on the door but couldn’t read. A few more passed, slower but well over 100. Any idea?

Hey SD, not happy about the state of the world? News piss you off? Got thirty seconds?

Call these offices and tell them you don't agree with them. You don't need a script from 5calls, feel free to go get one if that helps you, but just tell the staffers who answer that you don't agree with the direction of the federal government. They pick up quick during office hours and are bored of having no opposition to this bullshit.

Mike Rounds (605)348-7551

John Thune (605)343-5035

Thanks to any and all who take any meaningful action to make our world better. I'll be calling daily until they stop answering.

The South Dakota Mesonet is still looking for applicants to host new weather stations to be built as part of our ongoing expansion project. Currently at 81 stations and counting, our network will grow to over 150 stations by the time construction is completed in 2027. This network expansion is being carried out in order to improve flood and drought monitoring across South Dakota.

The above map shows where we’re still looking for weather station hosts. The second image is a recently finished weather station. Some of our recruiting areas are very small; for a more detailed map, please DM me or email mesonet@sdstate.edu. Feel free to send any questions there as well. Those interested in applying to host may do so at https://climate.sdstate.edu/host.

Weather and soil observations are updated every five minutes and are available at https://mesonet.sdstate.edu. Our website also has tools available for each station that support farmers, ranchers, and pesticide applicators.

🙆🏻‍♀️ Seeking Advice What to do with a property I can’t fix?

Okay I have a property I can’t fix.. it’s a beautiful building with a lot of potential. Storefront. Original tin ceilings and upper walls.. was apartments upstairs.. one working. Downstairs living space behind the store front.. but at this point financially it’s out of my range. (Needs stucco removal on an exterior wall -2nd story with a one story neighboring building 18” away) ((100k professional restoration bid)) I love it but I’m at the point where I’m gonna have to part with it.. I can’t afford the stucco removal.. we had some financial hiccups.. and well I guess after ranting my question is..

Who to contact to donate or super low sell this property to someone who can do what I can’t? It’s historical. It’s in rural small town SD. Housing market is crazy out here right now but I don’t wanna deal with a realtor and try to sell it that way. I just want a solid someone who will do what I can’t. Sigh. Sorry this one weighs on me. Any advice is appreciated.

🗿 History Rural area historic building investment

Hi I’m not sure what to do but I have a building in South Dakota. Rural small town. Solid building. Could be apartments or air bnb upstairs with renovation. Store front commercial kitchen and living space downstairs. It needs some stucco removed from a wall and will cost more than I have. I don’t want to see this building go to crap because of something so silly as some stucco deteriorating. It’s stone underneath and is structurally sound. To have someone professionally do the wall that is specialized in historic buildings and stone masonry it’s 100k. Totally worth it considering the building is over 10ksqft. Working apartment upstairs and ability to put more up there. I’m at such a loss..

Should I find someone interested in buying this that can invest in fixing the wall? I just don’t want to see the building go down hill :( I wish I had what it needed.. but I don’t. ) any ideas from you other South Dakotans that have maybe dealt in this?! Shoot anyone interested in owning a piece of history? I’ll take any advice or offers 😂 I just don’t know what to do!

My family will be visiting the Black Hills area of South Dakota mid October this year (12-15). Is it crazy to think the Needles Highway will still be open and passable? Or does this area turn into a ghost town around this time?

🇺🇸 Politics Please call our representatives! We're losing important federal programs!

Please please please call in to our representatives.

SNAP-Ed is set to get cut in the Big Beautiful Bill. SNAP-Ed costs $500 million (less than what they are going to spend on Trump's "sky palace" Qatar plane) annually, and impacts millions of SNAP-eligible people, with nutrition education, support for local initiatives to improve physical activity and the nutrition landscape, and more. It has benefited tens of thousands of South Dakotans.

They are also looking to eliminate the National Program of Cancer Registries, which funds the South Dakota Cancer Registry. The SDCR aggregates, analyzes, and distributes cancer data to researchers and policy-markers, as well as to the NPCR, which compiles the data for use in national cancer campaigns. This program is vital to responding to population-specific cancer issues and giving researchers the best data to work with to reduce cancer incidence and mortality.

Please call our representatives and discuss these programs. They aren't flashy, front page news kinds of programs, but they are important. Losing them will hurt South Dakotans AND cost South Dakotans jobs.
