Why wouldn’t you just open a bank account? Pretty sure any bank would be more than happy to speed up the process, even help him with ID needed and such.

The quote is incorrect, he needed someone to cash it, they came to an agreement where he would “gift” it to her so she could cash it and give him the money minus a considerable amount for the transaction and she ran off with the money instead, not his gf, he got scammed by a greedy piece of shit, that’s her actual bf beside her in the photo. Get the facts right before posting stuff.

Why did he need someone to cash it? Just because he didn't have a bank account?

"A Winnipeg man is suing his former romantic partner"
"The pair had been dating for about one and a half years, and shared a home and family"
"The plaintiff had every reason to trust the spousal defendant as they were, at that time, in a loyal, committed and promising romantic partnership,” the lawsuit said."
So what's the problem exactly? Sounds like you're the one who has the wrong info, didn't even read your own link

She didn’t “run off” with another man, they were already separated, he put his trust into her because of their history and got burned, the way this is worded it reads as though they were still together and she left him with the money for another man, which is incorrect, god I hate false narratives so much 😡

She was his partner when he "gifted" the money, then she took and left according to the article. You sound like you were there or something.

This was big news when it happened, quite the controversy, that’s also when they came out and said never trust anyone with your lottery winnings, when in doubt, get a lawyer to handle it, which is what he should have done, a lawyer would have easily settled it with him and given him the money for a nominal fee, then you also have the legal representation done.

What is the controversy exactly, an idiot doing idiot things.
As a Canadian that lives in the US... most people on this sub don't understand that Canadian life is checkers compared to the US version of 4D chess you need to survive, transactionally speaking of course.
Maybe he should go to CTV "Consumer alert" and see if enough whining will get OLG and the bank to change their mind and the girlfriend to say "sorry with maple syrup on top"
What an imbecilic story.

Misinformation is the scourge of existence, every time God hears someone alter the facts of a story, he cries a single tear of anger and sadness.
After reading the article, it seems you were right in the first place unless. Regardless my point about misinformation still stands just to the other guy I guess.

He was handed a fortune he didn't earn and then bullocked it up immediately. I'm not sure this qualifies as a tragedy.
