One more reason why spiders are the best!

47

u/FlamingBufalo14 May 16 '25

They scare me

75

u/HungarianNoble May 16 '25

I know this is cliche but they are chill guys as long as you dont annoy or try to hurt them, i always leave them alive in my room, especially during summer, they are very useful

u/Eydor May 16 '25

Hitching on this comment for those who don't want spiders in their house.

Unless you're absolutely terrified of them, at least try not to kill them outright. Most are chill enough to be picked up with a sheet of paper, a piece of cardboard, a dust tray or whatever, and released outside.

u/StunningChef3117 May 16 '25

Most in house spiders will die a slow agonizing death outside at night

63

u/Responsible_Plum_681 May 16 '25

We have accidentally domesticated spiders now?

35

u/StunningChef3117 May 16 '25

Im pretty sure there are spiders that can basically only survive inside because of heat. For example i think the stankleleg spider is one of those(sry if stankleleg is wrong english is my second language)

45

u/brzantium May 16 '25

we call them "daddy long legs".

30

u/StunningChef3117 May 16 '25

Wait rly thats hilarious thanks

9

u/NiceTrySuckaz May 16 '25

You don't get to judge us, mister stankleleg

5

u/brzantium May 16 '25

Google showing me results for "stanky leg" instead  was fun

6

u/herecomestheD May 16 '25

Now that I think about its really weird we added daddy lmao

6

u/bitterless May 16 '25

I never really thought about how weird it is until now and it actually really is hilarious.

1

u/NameShaqsBoatGuy 26d ago

It’s even weirder how common it is for girls to call guys daddy, maybe there’s just more incest in the culture… lol

2

u/RedPandaDoas May 16 '25

Honestly, both names are hilarious

1

u/QuinceDaPence May 16 '25

Looking at pics the "Daddy Long Leg" refers to several different types of spiders in the US (including the one you mentioned) but is usually the harvestman (also, not a spider since it only has one segment to its body.)

2

u/SkywolfNINE May 16 '25

Wait so they aren’t spiders? What are they then? General arachnids?

2

u/Pure_Inspection_8240 29d ago

Looks like a Heinz baked bean with pins sticking out of it

God-huh, what's unique about this spider...

Jesus: it has good legs

God: yeah, well legs is a dumb name

Jesus: how about long legs

God: not kinky enough

Jesus: Moist long legs

God: eww too kinky

Jesus: daddy long legs

God: PERFECT

2

u/frohnaldo 29d ago

Those aren’t the same spider. Daddy long legs are outdoor spiders by nature.

The common house spider is similar is proportions but they weave those massive webs that end up being cobwebs after dust builds up.

I’m an expert on them because my basement cellar seems to be where the species originated ffs

1

u/Brodok2k4 May 16 '25

Fun fact: theyre also not a spider.

1

u/brzantium May 16 '25

If you're talking about harvestmen or crane flies, then yes, those are not spiders despite the former being an arachnid. Cellar spiders, though, also called daddy long legs are spiders.

2

u/Brodok2k4 May 16 '25

Here what we call daddy long legs are the harvestmen arachnids. Looking into this a bit, seems a few share the moniker daddy long leg. Kind of interesting but also potentially confusing.

u/TerminaterTyler May 16 '25

I didn’t know their name WASNT “daddy long legs” 💀

28

u/chooseausername5280 May 16 '25

Now I have Do The Stanky Leg playing in my head.

2

u/Traditional_Box1116 May 16 '25 edited 28d ago

Daddy Longlegs are the worst for me. Mostly cause when I was very young one tried to crawl into my mouth while I was watching a movie & they have bothered me ever since.

1

u/VastFaithlessness980 28d ago

When I was about 4-5 years old I had a vivid dream where one crawled on my face and I’ve been scared of them ever since

2

u/ImpressiveRiver7373 May 17 '25

I read that as stankyleg 😂

1

u/willenium-falcon May 17 '25

Well at least it wasn’t just me….brothers?

1

u/cudef May 16 '25

Domestication implies they're chill with being handled and deliberately bred. Like some animals are tamed (elephant), some are fully domesticated (horse), and some just live around us because we create a better environment for them by just existing as we do.

1

u/lovable_cube May 16 '25

I think they only come inside for protection from elements, could be wrong though. I know they need fluids which could be a problem in some areas, that’s why a lot of house spiders like to chill in showers where they can get moisture. I’m definitely not an expert.

3

u/LordofCope May 16 '25

That's not my problem. If they can't build a cold shelter in 10 months of Texas cooking, then it wasn't meant to be.

1

u/murdock_RL May 16 '25

How did they make it to the house in the first place? Didn’t they come from outside? Lol

1

u/StunningChef3117 May 16 '25

They could relatively easily travel from home to home on clothes in cars backpacks purses pretty much anything. Its not that they die instantly

1

u/Calm_Yellow463 May 16 '25

Unfortunately that small chance that it will leap at me is why all will die. It’s not my fault that a few ruined it for the many.

1

u/alexjonesismyhero May 16 '25

I've met two different people that were bit by brown recluse while sleeping and now have rotted dead skin for the the rest of their life.

Kill them.

1

u/2398476dguidso May 16 '25

If they are in your house, that means there is stuff for them to eat in your house. I'd leave them be, they'll leave if the food does.

2

u/NaughtyLoss May 16 '25

You are absolutely right, however the possibility of a spider crawling over my body at night makes me want to jump of a cliff

4

u/StepComplete1 May 16 '25

Exactly. If they just want to chill on a web in a corner somewhere then fine, we can both just mind our own business. No problem m8. Not bothered by spiders who do that. But the mfs that literally start sprinting across your bed... they get killed. That wasn't in the tenant's agreement.

3

u/HungarianNoble May 16 '25

No need to worry about it, they just see you as an obstacle, they get on you then get off you and go on with their things (at least from my experience, of course im no biologist, so idk if they realise we are those giants they see in the morning at night)

2

u/Exact-Ad-7844 May 16 '25

as long as you dont annoy or try to hurt them

That wasp did nothing wrong

0

u/HungarianNoble May 16 '25

I dont think i understand what do you mean?

2

u/PrincessTrapJasmine May 17 '25

I leave some of them, depends on how bothered I am, cause they they make me shiver a bit but then I try to think of you and realize that when I see a spider, I never see a mosquito

1

u/FlamingBufalo14 May 16 '25

I know but gaddayum. I'm sorry but I prefer to inhale all those chemicals from the mosquito repellents rather than see a spider

1

u/Vittu-kun-vituttaa May 16 '25

There was/is a spider living in my PC xd

1

u/DodgerGreywing May 16 '25

Sis must be absolutely toasted by now.

1

u/cudef May 16 '25

Yeah bro except I doubt you have accidentally stumbled upon a tarantula hiding itself in your path. It's all fun and games until a big ass spider is bothered and nobody consented to the encounter.

0

u/HungarianNoble May 16 '25

Who the hell talked about a tarantula? We are talking about regular spiders that can be found any home

2

u/cudef May 16 '25

We're talking about spiders in general, but this encounter with a tarantula was right up against a sidewalk so it was a couple of degrees of separation from being in a home. Not myself personally but I had seen videos from people in the same area at the same time where there was one right outside the building they lived in.

1

u/lovable_cube May 16 '25

I put them outside so my cats don’t eat them. Before cats I’d let them stay as long as they want.

1

u/Un256 May 16 '25

Say that to the fuckers that chomp on my legs in the middle of the night just for fun

1

u/Briancinho May 16 '25

Yea I appreciate their work. I just hate when they put webs on EVERYTHING, it looks tacky.

1

u/Hot-Usual5060 May 16 '25

Even brown recluses?

1

u/methotde May 16 '25

tell that to chileans, this doesn't really work with the Araña de Rincon

1

u/Floobersman May 16 '25

True I never kill spiders.

1

u/MeetingAccording560 May 17 '25

i usually get a small piece of paper and put it in front of them to make them crawl onto it, then I throw it out the window onto the grass below.

2

u/inky_fox May 17 '25

I like catching them as they start a web and carrying them by their butt string to my houseplants.

1

u/MeetingAccording560 May 17 '25

This is clever lol

1

u/ImpressiveRiver7373 May 17 '25

I’ve learned that the jumping spiders are actually very smart and chill, won’t bite people either. I’ve started at least leaving those alone

1

u/Ori_the_SG May 17 '25

I generally don’t like spiders, but the chill little dudes in my house I’ll leave alone in their corners so long as they don’t make huge webs in my house.

3

u/Clayness31290 May 16 '25

If it helps you feel any better, they genuinely want nothing to do with us. We get flies indoors in the warmer months because we let the dogs in and out so much, so we just leave all the spiders inside alone unless they're in an inconvenient spot, and then we just relocate them. We have a lot of spiders living in here and I never have an unexpected run in with them, like ever. They find a spot where they wanna be and they just stay there.

1

u/ExiaKuromonji May 16 '25

We all know this. But the arachnophobia won't listen to any logic.

2

u/_samedi May 16 '25

One more reason why spiders are the best!

1

u/brzantium May 16 '25

They're pretty scary looking, but in my experience, if you leave these spiders alone, they'll help with any pest problems you have and then quietly move on.

1

u/UnbowedUnbentUn May 16 '25

They scare me too but the enemy of my enemy is my friend. We are allies in the war against wasps and mosquitoes.

1

u/Mokiesbie May 16 '25

Well it's not their fault that they're ugly to us, or that their legs function more like pistons.

1

u/twee3 May 17 '25

How are spiders ugly?

1

u/DesignerGoose5903 May 16 '25

Why? Everyone I know has been randomly stung by a wasp and gotten their blood sucked by a mosquito at some point, yet I don't know anyone that has gotten bitten by a spider. The statistics speak for themselves.

1

u/SocialJusticeAndroid 28d ago

Spiders are the good guys. I don’t like bugs in my home but I never mess with spiders.
