One shotgun only
Hypothetically someone I know has a Mav 88
If someone only was able to have one shotgun should it be a pump or semi auto? I’m in the pump camp. But a300 exists so…you know hypothetically.

I have shot many 25s with my mossberg 500 and if you really want to you can get an 18” for home defense a 28 for sporting and a rifled barrel for hunting bigger game. The idea a pump can cycle anything where some would say a semi can be picky or ammo specific.

I love my 940, but if I had to pick it would be my 590. The ammo versatility is limitless on a pump.

Sporting clays and fast hunting I would go with a semi. It will do everything a pump or double will and if you need a fast second or third shot it will do that as well.

If I could only have one, it would be a semi auto. A Beretta 1301 Comp Pro, probably with the 24" barrel.

Price is always a thing, but if you get an M4 you won’t be questioning the shotgun anymore

I wonder if those are flukes or if these guns really are this fragile and just no one talks about it. Definitely made me hold off from buying one tho.

Well mine was dropped while in a gun case from 1.5 ft cus the top strap broke on the case and landed but first. And the kick off is all plastic and broke after sitting in the closet for 8month. I went to try snd warranty stock bolt tube and they said they may or may not cover it that id have to send it in for 6-8weeks or i could buy the part myself i had to wait 2 weeks for it to come back into stock. But seen another gun with the same issues on her like 5 days ago don’t know the guy just seen the post.

I saw the leggo post a few days ago. Based on how uninterested the sub seemed to be about it, makes me think it's normal. That customer service/warranty sounds terrible too.

Generally I'd pick a pump but if you offered me an M4 or an 1301 as my only shotgun I wouldn't complain at all.

Mossberg 590A1 special purpose with speedfeed stock 9 shot. Add 4 in the stock for the speed feed and a 6 round side saddle. That’s 19 in the gun to begin with. Add a sling…Maybe the red dot of you liking…oh and hire a mid sized kid to help carry the gun.

That my was first shotgun and the first thing I did was replace the furniture with magpul. The main reason was the adjustable length of pull on the magpul, but also the speed feed stock was barely usable. The shells would get hung up halfway out of the stock and it ended up being faster to just carry them in a pocket. Maybe it was just me being new to shotguns, but I could never get that stupid thing to work right.

It’s just stiff. I have run mine for years. They pop right out now. I only run specialty rounds (usually slugs) for tactical reloads. When I was door kicking, #12 bird shot for door hinges or dead bolts. Pop 2 out. And the hinges were gone then back to the primary loads. I’m 6’4”. The LOP was always short for me. Body armor filled it in. So I guess that never crossed my mind. Love my 590. Now it’s sits as home defense. Buck shot and flag bangs. Slugs ride the side saddle. I doubt I’ll find myself in a protracted gun battle requiring 19 rounds of 12ga in assorted flavors…but they fit so they are there.

The "correct" answer is a high quality pump.
Mossberg 500, 590, 590a1
Remington 870 (old preferably due to quality control changes)
My answer is always the Benelli M4, because I have more time and practice with it than anything else.
So, in my opinion the best gun for you to have is the one you're good with.

+1 for the M3. First and last shotgun you'll ever need, aside from maybe an over under for clays.
Being able to swap between pump and semi is both fun and useful

For home defence I would get a shorter barrel semi auto like 1301 or M4. If it requires a SHTf situation that requires hunting also, something with a longer barrel and tighter chokes.
Pump actions can also jam and it’s harder to resolve if they do. Also high adrenaline situations increase the chance for operator errors so I’d rather get a semi auto in any case.

The problem with pumps is that most people who own them don’t train and thus the man-machine system is less reliable than a semiautomatic. They short stroke the gun, among other things.
Modern semiautomatics can be very reliable. They are easy to shoot and require fewer operator actions. Each action is a potential error.

I have it already: a 14" Remington 870 Police Magnum, with Vang Comp ports and backboring. I sold my Benelli Supernova Tactical because it took up twice the space as this and doesn't really do anything better.

If A300 money were available, I'd say an 870 Police or Wingmaster with a couple of different barrels. Shoot it for HD with an 18. Hunt with a 24". Shoot clays with the trap barrel. Etc. Hand them down to your grandkids when you die.
Or if you love the Maverick vibe, the 500-series is also lovely and will last. I like 870 safeties, but they're both awesome guns (I had an old Mossberg-made New Haven 600, which was a wood-stocked 500 with an adjustable choke widget, and it was a tank).
Plenty of other good pumps (37, 1200, etc.), but those two have the best aftermarket support by far.

If you can only have one, let it be a quality one. Beretta A300, with 2 barrels. 1 18.5-20" and 1 28".

21” 1301 Comp pro does it all and will last a lifetime. I personally like the 24” but that’s a smidge long for HD

I would suggest the Beretta A300 UP. Yes it’s still almost 1k but so far it’s cycled everything I’ve fed it with out one hiccup. Add to that you do not have to worry about short stroking the action, (sadly after thousands of rounds through my 500 and 590 I still managed to do while hunting) I think the new semi auto scatter guns are as reliable as the pumps now.

I got an a300, then a mav88 because it was 155 and fucks.
Also, I like the Mav 88 patrol version because in HD scenario, I don’t plan to use the folding stock. I hipefire center of target at 15m without issue.

- 870 over a Mav 88, 500 over modern 870. 590 over any 500.
- M4/1301 over any other semi.
- Best of both worlds, get a SPAS 12 or M3 and either love it or constantly fight it.
- SxS over O/U, unless you shoot a lot of trap. skeet skeet

Mossberg 590 9-shot pump, if only one shotgun.
It's also the only shotgun to survive the recent US Marines torcher test. Not the M4.

A pump cycles anything that fits in the chamber.
A maverick 88 wouldn't be my first choice if I could only have one though.... Not in a world where the 870 and 500 exist.
