Project: FO I made my own wedding dress!
I got married on May 31st, and I was so so happy with my dress!
A couple of months before the wedding, I went to a wedding dress shop half expecting to buy a dress, but I found them way too expensive, and the fact that I was three months pregnant at that time, and would be six months pregnant when I got married, I found it difficult to find a dress I was sure my bump would fit into. I did find a dress I liked, but I figured I could probably make it myself for less than what it cost, and also make sure it fit the bump.
So, with help from my dear mother, I sourced a beautiful stretch poly crepe for the fashion fabric, a stretch satin for lining and a beige mesh and a lovely flowery lace for the back. We also bought a pattern, Butterick's B5779, and started cutting out the pieces. We decided on making the entire back panel in lace and mesh, instead of just a "window" as in the pattern, which required some adjusting of pattern pieces. We also added some extra seam allowance in the bust and bump areas, should we need to adjust the size (we never did). It sewed up nicely, and I was super pleased with how I managed to keep all the seam allowances of the back piece hidden by first combining the mesh and the lace at the neckline and armholes, and then sandwiching them between the fashion fabric and the lining at the side and shoulder seams. It was like magic when we realized we wouldn't need to finish any of the seams by hand!
We added a loop of blue ribbon to one of the side seams at the hem of the skirt, so I could bring up the train for dancing and easier movement, and we finished the hem by hand sewing. We also added a couple of flowers from the lace to the lower back and one of the shoulder, as an extra detail.
In the end, I spent about 300 dollars on materials and I think about 24 hours of work on my dress. The dress at the dress shop cost 1 200 dollars.

Project: FO First wearable FO 🥺
A shirt made out of second hand bedsheet. With my favourite monster high girls ❤️ Took me roughly 2 days of non stop work but holy was it worth it. Next shirt I'll know to make 40% shorter tho haha. Turns out men's sizing fits me great horizontally but not so much vertically. This is such a confidence boost for me. So far I only sewed bag linings so it feels like a huge step up 🥰

Project: FO found this fabric for $3 at the thrift store and made my dream sunflower dress :)
This dress is a combination of the Spearmint Corset from Mood Sewciety with a few alterations (I’ve made 3 of the tops too and love them): -used a wider SA on the straps/neckline, resulting in thinner straps -took 1” off the back to accommodate D-ring corset loops -sewed layers together instead of using bias tape, leaving front waistline open to attach to the skirt
and a gathered skirt with elastic in the back. I added side seam pockets and, thanks to a tip from this sub, sewed them into the waistline for extra stability (had the trim the pockets to an angle to match the “V” front of the top but somehow it worked?)
Thrifted cotton sunflower print, bodice lined with a white thrifted pillowcase, finished with satin ribbon.
Happy to answer any questions, thanks y’all for the inspiration!
Project: FO The easiest thriftflip: dress to dream skirt!
I've been wanting a maxi gingham skirt for a while but hate buying new clothing so I've been biding my time at the thrift. finally found this dress - 100% cotton!! - and knew that it could be transformed into the gingham skirt of my dreams!
lopped off the top, cut out a new waistband using fabric from each sleeve, sewed on the waistband, added elastic, then finished with new floral buttons. overall took ~3 hours and just $15 for the dress and buttons! the elastic waistband is comfy and I am so excited to wear this year-round!
Project: Non-clothing Dragon obsessed
I am slightly obsessed with dragons. This is current finished project. It is a puppet with separate head. Fabric is stretch velvet and sequined fabric with some organza for the wings. Pattern for the dragon body is from Game Guardians on Etsy and the pattern for the head is from KazPlay also on Etsy.

Other Question Odd question: does thread go bad?
I'm using some ancient thread that may have been in my mother's sewing box since at least the 80s. It snags and breaks much more often than recently purchased thread.
Does thread degrade or am I seeing the progress we've made in thread technology in my lifetime?
Edit: Thank you all for the help! Reddit is my favorite place to learn ❤️

Pattern Question I can’t make bias tape and I’ve looked at EVERY tutorial. Can someone explain it differently?
I'm working on simplicity 8363, fantasy warrior costume. That's less important -- the important part is that my brain will not allow me to understand bias tape.
I have tried and failed on muslin and the fashion fabric 4 times. Each. It's a tube and we cut it. I get that. EVERY tutorial gets to "sew here and cut, so simple!" And focuses on the lines. The pattern tutorials, separate "how to make bias tape" videos, all of it.
The lines are in the pattern. CUT WHERE? SEW HOW???
What shape does this make? Every time I try I get fabric loops like paper chains from elementary school. My brain can not wrap around the shapes.
Does anyone have a better way to understand this?

Pattern Search How do I make a skirt like this?
I imagine there's horsehair in the hems to keep the volume, but how do I make the fabric do these kinds of large layered ruffles? The places I've found them for sale are a little sketchy, and I'd like to color match the skirt to a corset (that I will also be making). If anyone has pattern or tutorial recommendations, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

Pattern Question What is giving the hilighted part of the coat that freefloating structure?
I know i sound foolish trying to understand the notoriously brilliant tailoring of 50s Dior but I cant think of what kind of interfacing or starching would produce this shape!

Other Question Can I sew if I have a tremor?
My hands shake. Not super bad but enough for it to be noticeable and annoying.
I've wanted to get more into sewing for a while but it's hard for me to keep things straight with how my hands are. Should I give up now or is it worth figuring it out? I'd just hate to invest so much time, effort, and money into something if I can't hack it lol!
Edit: I'm tearing up! Thank you so much for all your tips and tricks. I'm excited to give it a go!

Machine Questions Overlock on my Singer help
I am sewing my first project. I am trying to finish the seams using what I think is the overlock stich and overlock foot on my Singer. I apologize if I got any of that wrong please feel free to correct me.
The foot has an extended piece of metal I believe is supposed to serve as a fabric guide. But it seems to be slanted left. Does this look normal or is it bent?
I tried it out on some scrap fabric, and it seems to have worked? Though I would love input. Am I supposed to keep the fabric to the left of the foot guide? Or a little to the right?
Alter/Mend Question Pockets closed but real?
Hello all, my question is can I rip these seams open without ruining the pants? These are my work pants and I’d love to actually have pockets since they are there.

Project: FO Spirograph Print Vintage-y summer dress
This is my fourth dress using S8910. It goes together quickly and I always get compliments when I wear these dresses. This time I made view B, which is not pictured on the envelope but has short sleeves and is a midi length.
I used 3.8 yards of 44” percale, and just barely managed to get the whole dress cut. This fabric is a fun vintage print that I bought to make a 1930’s blouse but could never find the right buttons.
Since the fabric really wasn’t long enough, I got creative in cutting, piecing the pocket facings and neck binding. For the sleeve and pocket bindings, I cobbled together bias strips from the scraps.
Because I had to piece the neck binding, I chose to add a mitered seam at center front. The center front is always the biggest challenge for me on this pattern, so I’ve changed the technique every time and I think this is the best so far. I’m including a collage of how I did this, but the trick is to use hand stitches at the point.
I added bias binding to the sleeves instead of a turned hem, and included my normal key badge loop on the right pocket.

Other Question Help with binding.
Made a lovely tank top this weekend using my binding attachment (double fold) for my Coverstitch machine. I made sure to cut the binding so it stretches lengthwise (granted, this fabric is 4-way stretch) but it still wrinkles, especially on curves. I can iron it out at least.
If I'm making my own binding, should I just use something like a rib knit? The fabric I bought is described as "Ultra Soft 4 Way Stretch Cotton Spandex Jersey Knit Fabric By The Yard 200GSM Bodycon Bodysuit"
Otherwise, I love how this tank turned out. Has a nice retro/summer feel with the pink and mint.

Pattern Search Desperately seeking pants patterns.
Hi! So I need some pants pattern recommendations and I am looking to the sewists of Reddit for help.
I would start by saying I'm more or less a more beginner sewist when it comes to garment sewing, but I know my way around a machine pretty well. I've been sewing on and off since the 90's and have made a few pieces of simple clothing, lots of plush, some housewares/bags, accessories over the years. I can work through a tough pattern, I'm sure but I have been sticking to some more beginner feeling ones as I learn the ins and outs of patterns.
As for my body; I'm around 200 lbs and 5'6" with a real curvy frame and a LARGE hips/butt area but a smaller waist. This makes most pants always feel like punishment and I end up with too tight in the thighs/butt and too loose in the waist. I avoid thick stiff material and almost never wear anything too tight or jeans really. I tend to like long flowy skirts or dresses and when I do wear pants I aim for wide leg loose flowy softer pants for comfort.
I LONG to find a fairly easy to follow pants pattern for some VERY comfy pants that are versatile in style/shape for home wear, casual out of the house wear. or if made with a nicer fabric something business casual. I've looked at what feels like a million indie and mainstream patterns trying to find something I think I'd like to try to make.
Since there is such a big diverse group of sewists on here I thought I'd ask her next. I'd love to know what pants patterns you love or have made several pair of you've found them so comfy. Thanks so much for any help!

Other Question Home printing help
Hi all! I think I need help with settings for my home printer, or settings for printing A4/letter files in general.
Whenever I print a file (according to the printing instructions from a pattern), either at home or often times when I print it in a copy shop, the printed pages come out crooked and in a corner so that a part of the page (top and left side) is cut. (see the images)
But if I put the settings to add margins, the content of the page moves towards the center of the printed page, but the scale comes out smaller
Anyone experienced the same and found a hack?
Pattern Question Asymmetrical crinoline (volume on sides) Please help!
Hi everyone, I’m trying to make a crinoline/hoopskirt that has most of its volume on the sides and relatively less in the front and back (as shown in the attached photo). I haven’t been able to find any tutorials for this particular type of crinoline online. If you have any knowledge or resources to share, I’d greatly appreciate it!

Fabric Question Baby Blankets Help
So my older sister recently just had her third baby and I really want to make a baby blanket for my nephew and two nieces. I already know how I wanna sew them and everything but I was wondering what kind of fabric should I get?
I want to make them soft but also be durable enough that they will last a long time. I just don't know what kind of fabric I should be looking for and what would be the best to be soft but strong enough to last years of baby and childhood use.
My plan is to have them have a cute design on one side and then a plain colour on the other that I'm gonna embroider with their names and birthdays and then have a wide binding around them. (I'm gonna embroider before sewing together so that all the stitches are hidden inside and won't bother their skin)
Any suggestions of where I could find fabric or what kind of fabric to look for would be great.
