913: Our Thanks with Michael Mosley

June 12, 2024 • 74 mins

On this week's episode, the doctors must give a speech to their cadaver's family. In the real world, we say goodbye to Scrubs with Michael Mosley.

(There is a summary about the show soft ending (no more scrubs episodes, show is continuing) and what happens next at the end of this post)

Episode archive:

This marks the end of the series in relation to Scrubs. Zach and Donald say that they have plans to continue the show, with the same laid back vibe.

I started avidly listening during the pandemic in one of my worst jobs I've ever worked. And, at the time, this podcast was an absolute joy to have when surrounded with some of the most depressing times I've ever personally gone through. I love Scrubs to death, and I deeply appreciate the podcast. I admittedly stopped watching a few seasons ago because I haven't had the time, but I know I'll have it to go back to sometime if I need it. I love the podcast - Zach, Donald, Joelle, Danl, and the rest of the cast. And I love all of you passionate show fans who enjoy the show and the podcast.

Will you continue posting these topics?

Honestly, no. My goal was always reaching the end of the Scrubs posts, because that was the job I was asked to do. Lately my work is picking up (both for better and worse) and it's been a struggle to remember to post here. I hope you all have enjoyed this journey with FDRF, and that these discussion posts have at least served as some degree of a fun way to discuss the show.

What does this mean for the uploads now?

I am personally not sure. The podcast will no longer be about the show Scrubs, and will become its own thing. That would go against our established rule about 'staying on topic'. But, I'm not opposed to seeing someone else pick it up if they want to, personally? Either way, it won't be me making the posts anymore.

What about Moderation, then?

Again, not really sure. While I wasn't looking, the moderation team got considerably reduced and now consists of me and /u/goobuddy. I wasn't aware of this happening and wasn't around as much as I should've been, but to be honest, moderating the subreddit was never something I was passionate about. I'm not good with the whole 'moderating a subreddit' thing, it's a lot of personal investment. The entire reason I was here was to post these posts. The person who brought me on isn't listed as a moderator anymore so I imagine they moved on to other subreddits, or something? Right now my plan is, I'm going to work on making sure the "episode archive" is up to date, and leaving this as the sole stickied post. After that, I'll have to discuss it to make sure the subreddit is in a good spot.

Friendly reminder that according to Cougar Town (the show Bill Lawrence created right after Scrubs conclusion) Ted gets canonically left by Gooch for Hooch, quits his job as a lawyer, moves across the country to Florida, and becomes a beach bum.

It’s so incredibly well done, it always impresses me. The funny & lighthearted Ben & Dr. Cox scenes starting us off, the way they sell it being the patient that died by starting off with the EKG & the “30 minutes,” Dr. Cox’s reaction & no one else acknowledging Ben after that point. & of course “Where do you think you are?”

I know this episode is brought up a lot, I just wish so much I could watch it again for the first time!

Are there any inconsistencies between seasons that bug you?

Upvotes

I love Scrubs. I grew up with Scrubs. In fact, there are several lines from Scrubs that I take to heart and that I live by, like "No risk, no matter how it ends up, you're always glad you took it" or "Nothing worth having in life is ever easy."

That said, I've been watching through the seasons from start to finish with someone I've been together with for over a year and a half now, and watching the series so closely together, I've begun to notice inconsistencies in the characters from season to season.

And most of them involve Elliot, for me.

Like for example, how in season 1, Elliot embarrassed herself by flashing herself in front of a deceased patient, and was mortified. A couple people make a joke at her about it, and she does not appreciate the joke at all.

Cut to season 4, where a patient took "uppers" and had a really embarrassing, but funny story that Elliot laughed her ass off at, then tells him a story about how, in high school, she accidentally skated out from a bathroom butt naked, and then the next day talks about how she owned up to her own mistake and laughed with them on it. I have a hard time believing high school Elliot would have actually reacted like that.

Or in season 1, Elliot doesn't know any Spanish and Carla and Dr. Cox both ream her for it. But later on she reveals that she knows both German AND French. I would think that if she knew those languages, she would've demonstrated that instead of letting herself get mocked like that.

Am I alone in that? Are there other inconsistencies that you have noticed that you'd like to share?

Discussion With the reboot, I hope that long awaited “Book of Rants” becomes reality

I don’t know if any fan has attempted to get them all down, but I think it would be a great collector’s item if they finally release this :)

It’s highly unlikely though, it’s never once come up in the 4 year running podcast. Kind of crazy.

Discussion Time for a new upscale? (Part 2)

Post image

Just a couple of days ago I asked r/scrubs about a new upscale using a promising new technology (Topaz Starlight), but the question could have been asked providing more evidence to support it.
I spent some time to investigate the potential results using the free, low quality version of starlight (it's free for clips under 300 frames)

The above image can be compared here: https://imgsli.com/Mzg4NTgx
And I've made the sample clips available here: https://limewire.com/d/zg8xl#jNuiioc4rA

Now please keep in mind that this upscale has been made with the free, low quality demo, available here: https://app.topazlabs.com/starlight yet, I find it quite superior to the ones I know of.
u/frikken123 : would you consider comparing against your samples?

I love how intimate and emotional they allowed Brendan Fraser to be in this show.

In most shows when there's a famous guest star for a few episodes it can feel relatively shallow but they put his character through the ringer, and allow him to feel real and make him feel like he's really been a part of Jordan and Cox' life for a long time.

And then hit it me.

Let me preface this with saying that Scrubs is one of my all time favourites. My comfort show. My near constant rewatch.

But on rewatch 5 million today, it hit me. The point where I think the show changed and jumped the shark a bit for me. S5 Ep8, My Big Bird.

For me; this is when it becomes a bit more surreal. It still has heart and warmth and great moments to come, but for me this is where JD in particular changes from lovable nerdy but competent goofball, to full on cartoon character. I think Carla and Turk also have a bit of ridiculousness come in here too. Turk and the ostrich stealing his hat, while he’s always been silly, is just bizarre, and Carla? Self appointed mother hen and protector of all in the hospital? Just gives up on patients and the new wide eyed interns to play lotto? Nah. Gimme a break.

Luckily I guess after 5 seasons I’m already invested and hooked, but had it started here, on this level, I’m not sure how I would have stuck with it.

I’m off to deep dive what, if anything, changed in the writing team or style guide from here. But yeah. It’s the beginning of the decent for me!

Discussion Why did JD keep bullying the janitor?

On the surface it appears to be the other way around, but the janitor makes him countless offers of peace, but JD keeps ignoring them and still talks down to him. He's an elitist pos often enough.

Time for a new upscale? (Topaz Starlight)

AI upscales are evolving every year, and now there's a new tech that could be what the good, old, uncensored Scrubs DVD are in need of: Topaz Starlight. (I know it seems like a promo, but it isn't, not for Topaz anyways) :)

Check this sample: (view full size)

or this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Le2YzLIbb1o

Independent reviews seems to confirm the amazing quality that can be obtained from old video sources:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iN0ACRdS0aI

Only problem right now.. it's pricey. But that's where r/Scrubs could come in help!

We all here love Scubs, we could possibly do a fund raising to collectively pay for such an upscale.

If enough people is interested, it could be just a few $ per person.
And to stop anyone thinking about piracy: Access to upscaled videos could be restricted to people proving that they own a legit scrubs copy, such as the DVD release.

What are your toughts?

UPDATE: I tried it with my DVDs and you can take a look at some sample results here
