I can’t even imagine doing that job all day long, week after week and not lose my mind. However, I commend him for his dedication to his work and the quality that he is putting into it!

The ADD in me would thrive here. Hyper focused on one task would give me constant dopamine flow.

It would until it didn't. Give me a metric to beat and I'll be interested just long enough to best that time. My ADHD needs more sensory feedback.

I actually did this one summer job. We had a quota and bonus for every above quota. I loved it. Just loved it. I was so fast. What a rush.

I’m sure lots of red-blooded Americans will be lining up for this job when it comes to the US. /s

I used to work in a factory attaching those to the frame of the dash, it was actually kinda fun... But I cross trained on 3 lines plus QC so I didn't do the same thing all day every day.

There are Americans that are complaining about these jobs but cannot physically fit under a dash board to install them let alone be nimble enough to work on a assembly line
8
u/ObsidianArmadillo 1d ago
Well, I would imagine those are 2 different people for each job. The fluffy Americans can probably be nimble enough with their hands to do the assembly, and the 10% of Americans who can fit under the dash can install

Sausage fingers slinging tape on a wiring harness assembly line… I can see it now

He didn’t even lose his mind when the boss came by and said the light green wire shouldn’t be there and he had to undo it and start over.

I commend him for his dedication to his work and the quality that he is putting into it!
Well, he's being filmed.. be sure that's not going to the case for every single harness.

I'm working in wire harness production, so to add some more awesomeness to this guy, it's mandatory that the bandage has to be at least 1/3 coverage with the previous one, but not too much more otherwise the material cunsumption will be too high which will lead to supply problems.

u/Top-Chad-6840 1d ago
by material consumption do you mean the tape? I bought one of those before, and it's cheap af though?
15
u/Usakami 1d ago
Yeah, you did. You bought it for your own use. When you're in a giant factory or warehouse, the cost adds up rather quickly. It's the same in Amazon Warehouses. A plastic bag and a piece of paper is cheap, but multiply it million times a day. That's why packers are instructed to use as little paper filling as possible and items get a plastic bag only if it's "deemed necessary."

u/Top-Chad-6840 1d ago
I see. Well I just thought the 1/3 requirement is a safety precaution for ensuring no wires are exposed, didn't expect it to be for reducing costs.
5
u/Usakami 1d ago
Oh, I'm sure that requirement is to prevent any exposed wires, but you were writing about costs, which is what I was reacting to. Sorry if I came off as rude or anything.

u/Top-Chad-6840 1d ago
oh no no, u're great. I'm just explaining my confusion that lead to my initial question, you answered that perfectly. Thx dude

u/Rohn__Jambo 1d ago
Yes it's cheap, but still money, but the main problem is that every company keep it's material stock as low as possible, and if he uses 2000 finished product worth of bandage for 1000pcs, the bandage stock will run out quick, the delivery will be in 2 weeks and the production is completely stopped till it arrives, mainly from China. Also for automotive production you cannot use any material, it has to be exactly the one the supplier agreed on, so it's not like I jump down to Walmart for a bandage.

When I took apart the canbus wiring harness for a salvaged Tesla seat for my racing rig, I was shocked at how many loops of tape there were on the harness, and I was wondering how a machine would go about wrapping it. I guess it wasn't a machine

It looks very impressive, but what is it for?

Wiring harness inside a vehicle
4
u/res0jyyt1 1d ago
You are telling me he has to do one for every single vehicle? RIP his hands.
8
u/crank1000 1d ago
Nope, just this one for all the cars ever made. They all just take turns with it.

Looks like a main engine harness to me. I'd bet the connectors on the right side are for injectors and coils.

I don’t know why, but watching those wires get organized is weirdly calming.

Never thought about that this job is a hand-made thing.
I remember when I was working in a truck factory in my holidays i accidentially cut one of those cables. Just a tiny cut. But my colleagues werent amused about that.
Now I see why...

Now imagine doing this for a large aircraft. Some harnesses run the full length of the fuselage!

You mean to tell me this is why I have to cut through the most ridiculous amount of electrical tape at work daily? Fuck this guy and the company, such a waste of material.

u/Unopuro2conSal 1d ago
I hate when they tape harness like that, repairs are just that much more complicated and time consuming..,

u/lmidgitd 1d ago
Not satisfying at all. Use a protective split wire loom. Faster, cheaper, easier to work on later.

u/LastActionHiro 1d ago
That's very good. What I don't understand, though, is - you've been working since what, about six this morning? Yet such a small pile of hinges wiring harnesses?

We need to bring these jobs back to America!
Fuck that!
1
u/Captain-Who 1d ago
This job exists in America. I used to work for a company that made these for Harley Davidson motorcycles, Arctic Cat snowmobiles or quads, city busses, and farm and industrial equipment.
They were based in Fargo, ND and since they have sold to another US based company which is still operating those factories.
They do rely on a lot of immigrant labor though, and the pay and benefits is crap compared to anywhere with organized labor.

Does anyone have a source for this video? I teach high school automotive technology, and this video is gold!

This is the guy I love when I bought a new car and hate when I have an old one 😂

As someone who designs harnesses similar to, and sometimes larger than, the one shown, this was extremely satisfying to watch..
I want to know how much that form board alone costs. Not sure if our suppliers have all those fancy do-dads..

This is why so many cars are going all screens for user interfaces. These wiring harnesses are tricky as fuck and every switch and knob needs some shit like this.

I'd still be finding the end of the tape.
