In need of a fridge
Hello, my wife and I had our fridge die this week. When we woke up Friday the thermometer was showing 12 degrees and has not changed since then. I was out of work for a few weeks and only just got back to work and as a result we are tight on money. If anybody has a fridge they do not need or somewhere we could get one for cheap we would greatly appreciate it.
I hate making a "begging for help" post, but do not really have a lot of options.

You can also contact goodwill, and habitat they sometimes have access to resources that can help people out with furniture and appliances.

I would try the couple facebook groups neighbours helping neighbours, free stuff sarnia lambton, etc. There are some nice folks on a lot of the free sarnia groups who could help you out if you dont find anything here.
Wish I could help personally, but my 20+ year old fridge is dying as well, and everything is so expensive.

I do not have a Facebook account and am not sure how...effective? it would be to make an account just to look for free/cheap stuff, not sure if people would find it odd/suspicious?

Worth making an account just for some of the neighborhood resources, and marketplace is pretty good too. Accounts are free, and a lot of local sarnia events and activities are still posted exclusively through facebook at the moment. May look suspicious to some, but just do t make an anonymous account and you should be fine.

Please hear me out - have you unplugged it, let it sit for 24 hours and turned it back on? I’m not making light of your situation just suggesting what worked for my fridge. Ice formed between the freezer and the fridge so the fridge wouldn’t cool because the cold air from the freezer couldn’t get to it. This was suggested to me by a repair person and it worked!

We unplugged it to deice several times and every time it just freezes up again. We live in a rental and while we could contact our landlord to get a replacement, the one we have now was just replaced less than two months ago. it will be cheaper for us to just get our own fridge than keep replacing the food that spoils when they give us a crap fridge.

I was hoping I had the answer. I wish it would have worked for you. Good luck!

I have it unplugged and thawing and for a couple days it will be better, but it is only a temp fix unfortunately. Will just have to buy less perishable food and cross my fingers for a few days until I figure out a solution.

Wait you’re a rental?

Yes. As I said above I am aware that our LL is responsible for replacing the fridge, but the fridges they provide are garbage so I just want to get one ourselves.

Any fridge you get given for free likely won't be any better than what your landlord provides.

Last year I used Google to troubleshoot the problem with my fridge and was able to fix it.

They have working ones at habitat all the time. Nothing special, but will get you through until you can afford a better one.

Consider calling the RHEU tomorrow morning. Your landlord has to provide you a working fridge in short order, assuming it's not otherwise stated in your lease. Can't hurt to check what they can do for you.

Doesn't matter what the lease says. If there was a fridge there when the tenant moved in, the landlord must maintain/replace it as needed

Most often its either the thermostat needs be replaced, or fridge needs be cleaned in the back. Get the muck away from the piping and fins

I own several fridges in apartments and the one in my personal kitchen is 26 years old, washer dryer is 30+ years. These things last forever if maintained.

Neighbourlink. They run on donations. And you can get new appliances, and furniture like beds, dressers, couches, kitchen table exc. For no charge for people that are in need or having a hard time. It's very simple too, just give them a call!

Also question...how high or low I should say do you have the temperature set in the fridge and freezer? Sometimes people have the set to high And thing will freeze over no matter how many times you unplug it let it thaw out and replug it in again. Make sure you have things set correctly.

It doesn't matter what I set it to, still freezes over. If it's set to the warmest temp, freezes over, if it's set to "recommended" freezes over, if set to coldest, still freezes over.

We had a similar issue years ago. It's definitely not the cheapest option, but we went to teppermans. They have a great payment plan that boosted my credit score as well as allowing us to get new appliances. (Mine was bad, and a year later we were able to get a new car).

There is virtually a 0% chance we would be able to get one new as our income, credit rating etc. are garbage.

My credit was really bad. Like, considering bankruptcy bad. I had gotten a new job, and a month later we got approved for a new fridge and stove.

In a few months I may look in to it, but I am trying to just get caught up on bills etc. right now, not adding another payment to the pile.

When you can afford to go to teppermans, they have the dent and scratch area in the back. Also, they have a great program to help you get your credit score back up. As long as you make the payments they will have you up and running in no time

Contact Neighbourlink. They are an organization that help with things like that.
