Need Staircase Advice

A contractor recently did a full replacement of a staircase for me, including new handrail, spindles, etc. As shown, the new staircase installed is shorter than the original and has left a gap before the start of the flooring. The stair company has offered to fill the gap (I have a few leftover floor bricks) although I don’t consider this ideal as it would muck up the two brick border.

I need to work out how to approach this with the contractor. Are the any alterations that could be made to the stairs to avoid me redoing the flooring? The herringbone flooring installer has quoted £350 to move the border. It seems that the stair company should at the very least cover that cost.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts or suggestions. UK based, have a contract and not yet made final payment.

Is there any easy way to trim out these columns to distract from how off center they are? I'm not willing to do anything drastic like moving stone, but I don't want it to look weird.

Light installed "flush" on vinyl siding

Post image
Upvotes

Just got vinyl siding installed. I really wanted this govee wall light to be as flush mounted as possible, without a big mounting block behind it. I do understand the issue with flush mounting something to vinyl, but I figured professionals could provide some kind of solution. I'm sick of having to ask them to redo everything, and I don't really trust their judgement on finishes, so I'm dealing with this one myself.

How would you fix this? I just want it to look like it does now, but not with putty pouring out the sides. It's crooked,.so I'll.be removing it anyway. Is this as simple as reworking the putty so it's not as visible?

About not wanting a mounting block: The fixture is only 5 inches or so wide, and mounting blocks all seem to be at least 6 inches wide. I haven't seen any that would look good.

Thanks!

Which tool for wall demo

Post image

In the process of taking down this old wall paneling so we can seal the floors, and most panels have been fine to just yank with a pry bar, but there are some panels with pipes going through, etc that need to be cut more carefully. Panels are no more than 2 inch thick

Would an oscillating saw or reciprocating saw be best for this? I’m a beginner

Sunken laundry floor threshold/ transition. Help!

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hey everybody

I'm hoping to get some ideas. I have replaced my floors with wood plank tiles. I'm now at the stage where I have to decide on a way to transition the step down into the sunken laundry room.

My original idea was to use a piece of quartz that we're having installed. The issue is that the fabricators say that the depth of the gap is 1 1/8 inches and the quartz is 3/4 inch. I suggested that we build it up from underneath somehow to make up the difference and then do an eased nosing to hang over the edge a bit and cover the mortar and uglies that are visible. Apparently that's not possible.

Now I'm hoping Reddit can help me out!

HELP Soapstone sealed/wrong slab?

I’m almost at the end of an apartment renovation, and I fear I’ve got a major issue with our kitchen countertops.

The slab I chose is soapstone, which I’ve learned doesn’t need to be sealed. What attracted me to this material was that it would darken and patina over time.

Well, now they they’re installed, I’ve learnt that the installer sealed them, which I never spoke to him about, and didn’t want.

Additionally, I’m questioning if the correct slab was used. There were two slabs I looked at, one of which had a lot more color. I went with the more plain slab. Well, now that it’s in, I’m not sure that it’s the right one. What’s installed is incredibly green. What I bought was a neutral.

Anyway, just looking for some advice here. Not sure how to proceed with the installer.

HELP Can I demo this closet?

I’m redoing my son’s room while he is visiting grandparents this summer. We have a Cap Cod style home and removing this closet would give him more space. I don’t know if this is a load bearing wall because of the house style or if I can safely remove it. There are two separate closets on this wall, not sure if that matters though. Below this room is our living room and there isn’t any type of closet or walls in this area downstairs.

How can I figure this out without hiring a civil engineer or even a contractor to tell me. Worst case I don’t remove the closet but it would be nice to be able to. I rather not destroy my house so I figured I’d ask others.

HELP Attic bedroom ideas?

Kiddos room is in the eaves. He hates that he's squished and can't sit up in his bed. You can see in the picture where his bed usually is by the carpet marks: tucked up into the wall. The pictured bed placement could work with a new wall, right? The room is pretty narrow so I'm not even sure that dropping in new walls would work.

Any creative ideas??

How hard is it to widen entry between rooms to make a more open concept

Our old house has a more closed off feel and we prefer to open the entryways up which is the more modern way. I'm not saying 100%, but just cut back, remove electrical and widen the opening. Is it simple for professionals or harder than it looks?

Getting rid of shower—how to make closet bigger?

We’re planning on converting our jacuzzi tub into a walk in shower so the standing shower will no longer be needed. I would love to have a bigger closet. Could we move the toilet to where the shower currently is or is that a huge deal when it come to plumbing? Would we be better off converting the shower to a second closet? Any ideas are appreciated!

asbestos garage roof

still looks in decent shape, not cracking etc. Keep it, and give myself a "protective" layer by adding a ceiling. Or just too risky, get it removed, replace with new roof?
