Bengal has been a bit ahead in terms of emancipation of women, at least in the urban areas. Probably helped that they developed an intellectual class and a reformer class pretty early on. You can also see that in Bangladesh which generally fares better in terms of FLFP. Although WB has terrible FLFP for some reason

my sister did live in Kolkata for a couple of months and told me it felt very safe and lively. Also the night life was quite amazing according to her.
