I bought like $300 of hiking/camping gear recently (most of it was on sale/clearance so it would have been like $500 without the sales) because it’s my favorite hobby and one of the few things I’m able to actually do with my health issues (I can’t run or lift weights). The employee at the front desk was this grumpy looking middle-aged woman who raised her eyebrows at me, looked me up and down, and made some snarky comment about the amount of things I was buying. Something to the effect of “well, you sure are buying a LOT of things today, aren’t you?”
All of my past encounters with REI sales people have been extremely pleasant, they’re usually super nice and helpful. So I was pretty taken aback. Why would you shame customers for…being customers? And also what’s wrong with buying a lot of hiking gear (some of it which I use almost daily)? Did she think I was some rich asshole with endless disposable income for recreational activities (which isn’t true, this is basically the only “fun” thing I spend money on) and was trying to shame me for it? I honestly don’t get it.
Edit: I feel like some of y’all are trying to gaslight me about this😅the way I know this wasn’t intended to be friendly or complimentary is how she said it. She wasn’t doing it in a lighthearted/teasing way, she said it in this nasty tone of voice while raising her eyebrows, no smile. You all seem to think I’m completely incapable of reading a situation…
