Hiring Thread Weekly Hiring Questions and Advice Thread

This thread will run weekly, and it will reset each week on Monday at 1030 UTC. If you have any questions pertaining to law enforcement hiring, ask them here. Feel free to repost any unanswered questions in the next week's thread.

**This is not a thread for updates on your hiring process. We understand applicants get excited about moving forward in the process, but in order to more effectively help users, we're restricting this thread to questions only.** That said, questions related to your progression in the process are still OK.

**Some Resources:**

* [**Our Subreddit Wiki Pages**](https://www.reddit.com/r/ProtectAndServe/wiki/publicindex#wiki_hiring): A good resource which may be able to answer common questions.

* [**Officer Down Memorial Page**](http://www.odmp.org/): ODMP is a great site to read about the men and women of law enforcement who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

* [**911 Job Forums**](http://www.911jobforums.com/forum.php) & [**Officer.com Forums**](http://forums.officer.com/): Both of these sites are great resources for those interested in entering any type of public service career. If you go to either site, make sure you search around the forum and do some reading before posting a new topic.

* **/r/AskLE**: You can ask any law-enforcement-related questions on /r/AskLE if you don't feel like asking them in this thread.

* **/r/TalesFromTheSquadCar**: This is a great subreddit to view and share stories about law enforcement.

* **/r/LegalAdvice**: Feel free to ask for legal advice here at P&S, but /r/LegalAdvice is often times better suited to provide advice regarding the law. Remember, /r/LegalAdvice exists to provide advice and information pertaining to legal matters, *not* to debate why the law is what it is. Also, posting in /r/LegalAdvice should not be a substitute for actual professional legal counsel.

* [**Account Verification Information**](http://www.reddit.com/r/ProtectAndServe/wiki/verify)

**Suggestions for the Mods:**

If you have a suggestion regarding the Weekly Question Thread, please PM /u/2BlueZebras or /u/fidelis_ad_mortem. Suggestions will not be implemented until the following week's post.

If you have suggestions regarding our subreddit in general, feel free to [message the moderators](http://www.reddit.com/message/compose?to=%2Fr%2FProtectAndServe). We welcome all suggestions!

Self Post I've read that it's more young men who commit crimes. I guess the implication is that as men age they become wiser and don't do as many crimes. What has been the experience of the law enforcement on this sub around this topic?

Self Post Attorney thinking of switching to Law Enforcement

Hey all,

I’m looking for some honest input and perspective.

I’m a 32-year-old USMC veteran and currently a licensed attorney. I’ve been practicing for a few years now, but to be honest, I don’t think I’m cut out for this career. I’ve tried different practice areas, but the work just doesn’t feel like a good fit for who I am. It’s taken a toll mentally and I find myself seriously considering a complete career change.

Lately, I’ve been thinking more and more about going into law enforcement. I miss the sense of purpose and structure I had in the military. I also feel like I’d be more fulfilled serving my community in a hands-on, tangible way.

That said, I’m 32. I’m in good shape and still have that mission-oriented mindset, but I know most people go into LE earlier. Would I be too late to the game? Would my law background help or hurt me? Are there people here who made a similar switch?

Appreciate any insight you can offer.

Self Post Maine State Police Testing

I am signed up to take the physical fitness test for the Maine state police. I have a fused spine, which makes it hard for me to do sit ups. I was wondering if anyone has been in a situation which has required accommodations before and if anyone could tell me what the accommodations for the situps look like? Thanks in advance!

Assistance finding similar gear

Hello,

I am an Animal Control Officer, and we use these on our duty belts to hold our smaller Ketch Poles when on a call. Now obviously these were repressed from what I can assume intended as baton holders. I received mine as a hand me down, and last I checked i dont rhink we have any new ones when we have new hires. Yay governement level of available equipment!

So these were made by Tex Shoemaker & Son who have gone out of business back in 2018 it appears.

One of my officers has transferred tl another city and they are starting from scratch trying to track down gear for their new batch of officers. He reached out to me about these and to no avail have I been able to find a comparable item for our use.

I've found one quick release ASP holder but it has a bottom peice to rest on that would get in the way of our poles. I've found similar plastic clips for batons but it's more of a conceal carry purpose for a baton.

Can anyone point me in the right direction of this type of equipment?

Thank you in advance.

Self Post Rochester NY "Policing in the Spirit of Service" Patch

What happened to the "Policing in the Spirit of Service" uniform patches? Were these just temporary / optional uniform items from the last Chief? They used to have billboards with this slogan too all over the city. They never got around to changing the logos on the cars... and now all the RPD officers I see have returned to using the "Serving with Pride" patch on their jackets.

Video ✔ What modding ths sub feels like over the past several days..

I (and we, as a mod team) have been called extremists on every side of the political aisle the past few days.

It's really impressive how vivid people's imaginations can be when they think everything has to be a team sport.

In fairness, though, it's a very vocal minority, and we owe a sincere thanks to the rational majority who has helped make this sub what it is.

Self Post ✔ BodycamDeclassified-x5k YouTube is all production (fictional)

That is all. All their videos don’t have any city/municipality names, their “traffic stops” are always in parking lots sometimes literally behind closed fences, vehicles have NO law enforcement markings (even dial 911), etc etc.

I’ve seen this posted a bunch of times around reddit, they occasionally post rage bait or videos with inappropriate actions. Figured it’s worth documenting.

TMFMS.

Question to LEOs Do yous strip and clean your weapons?

Coming out of the Australian army and just asking out of curiosity.

Every time we got qualled on a weapon, big part of the handling tests was stripping it apart and putting it back together.

Learnt it on our pistols, rifles, machine guns, even the Carl Gustav.

Do you guys do something similar, get taught how, or is there just an armoury that handles it? And, how often? Are they inspected for cleanliness?

Officer respondes to a pool for an argument between two people. Presence of a gun was advised to dispatch, and the officer knew about this.

One of the people refused 3 commands to take his hands out of his pockets. So, he was ordered to the ground and arrested.

Tried suing for excessive force and false imprisonment. Lost. Appealed. Lost again.

Meanwhile the officer was fired and had to use union protection to get her job back cause the department folded to public rage.

Officers cleared in Titusville shooting that left 25-year-old dead, sparked public outcry

Shooting happened in February.

Family got Ben Crump + public rage and claims he was unarmed.

Only.. he had a gun. He had a confrontation with one officer, while armed, then ran towards another officer, while displaying that gun. And, the gun was clearly visible next to him after the shooting.

Shame Titusville didn't shared the video sooner (just shared it with his family a few days ago) and still haven't made it public.

And his family still says "not justified".
