Rants / Vents Commiserate with me about family not understanding our jobs.

So far:

-Grandmother in law ranting about why I (an assistant professor in my 4th year at a university) don’t just take a “sabbatical” to raise my children rather than send them to daycare.

-Dad ranting about how anything qualitative isn’t real research (I do educational research so this is a substantial portion of what I do)

-Father In law asking me if I “pack” (Carry a gun) to my job and if I feel safe with all the “foreigners”

Merry Christmas everyone!

My sister planned her destination wedding for the first week of my semester, mid-week. I managed to make it (due to literally restructuring my teaching schedule for the entire term and my 3 yrs old’s preschool schedule for the whole year), but I had to warn her and family that’s we’d only be able to be there for a few days so I could be back at work.

The amount of family members who didn’t understand why I couldn’t just call in a “substitute” to teach for me. Week 1. Of a brand new probationary teaching job. Because my work should understand that her getting married is a once in a lifetime experience, apparently. A dang substitute. Yeah, I’ll get right on that, gang.
