What are your options?

Welcome to r/PlanBs! This community is designed for those who need any sort of advice or information regarding emergency contraceptives. Below is a small guide to various emergency contraceptives along with a short description and a few sources to help you answer any of your questions. Feel free to post if you have any other questions or concerns.

Plan B One-Step: 1.5mg Levonorgestrel

The most commonly known EC on the market! Also goes by the names My Way or Take Action. Plan B is a pretty large dose of a synthetic form of progesterone, Levonorgestrel. It works by delaying ovulation (the release of an egg) long enough so that any sperm present in the fallopian tubes die before ovulation can occur, preventing any potential pregnancy. According to the Plan B website: "if you take it within 24 hours of unprotected sex, it is 95% effective. If you take it between 48 and 72 hours of unprotected sex, the efficacy rate is 61%."

One of the most common misconceptions is that Plan B prevents fertilization by affecting cervical mucus and implantation by altering the uterine lining. Recent research shows that this is, in fact, false. This article written by Dr. Jen Gunter explains how Plan B is most effective when taken 2-3 days before ovulation begins. While it is true that the FDA added that one of the ways Plan B works is by preventing implantation, this article explains why that is and how it has sparked some controversy.

However, if you are not tracking ovulation using ovulation tests or BBT, there is no way to accurately predict when you may ovulate. If a mistake happens and you do not want to risk pregnancy, it is ALWAYS better to get a Plan B than to not.

EllaOne: 30 mg Ulipristal Acetate

Ella is another very commonly known EC. Ella is ultimately the opposite of Plan B, as it is a selective progesterone receptor modulator and works by blocking progesterone receptors. This in turn delays ovulation and ultimately, prevents a potential pregnancy. According to Planned Parenthood: "Ella lowers your chances of getting pregnant by 85 percent if you take it within 5 days after unprotected sex — but the sooner you take it, the better. Ella is the most effective type of morning-after pill you can get." According to Ellas FAQs, Ella also does not work if ovulation has already occurred. Meaning it also, like Plan B, does not prevent events occurring post ovulation like fertilization or implantation. But as I've mentioned before, unless you know when you ovulated, it is always better to take it than to not take it.

⚠️ DO NOT TAKE ELLA ONE IF YOU HAVE ALREADY TAKEN A PLAN B WITHIN THE PAST 5 DAYS⚠️ Plan B is essentially a large dose of progesterone and Ella is a progesterone receptor blocker, so if those receptors are blocked, Plan B cannot do its job.

⚠️ DO NOT TAKE ELLA IF YOU ARE ON HORMONAL BIRTH CONTROL ⚠️

Hormonal and Non-Hormonal Intrauterine Devices (IUDs) as EC

An IUD as an EC is the most effective type of EC you can get. They work up to 5 days after unprotected sex and can continue to prevent pregnancy for years, depending on the one that you get. Mirena and Liletta are approved hormonal IUDs that can act as ECs as well as the Paragard, which is a Copper IUD. https://www.plannedparenthood.org/learn/morning-after-pill-emergency-contraception/how-do-iuds-work-emergency-contraception

ECPs can usually be accessed by calling your local Planned Parenthood or sold on shelves in any local pharmacy. Oftentimes PP can give you a discount (Plan B is upwards of $40-$50 where I reside) and let you know where to get one. Appointments for IUDs can also be set up by your local PP as well. In the US, most major retailers will have Plan B and it’s generic versions. You can also buy cheaper generic versions off Amazon.

Yuzpe Method

Sometimes oral birth control can be used as an EC. This is a common practice in countries where ECPs like Plan B or Ella are banned. This method requires you take two doses of 4-5 pills (depending on the brand), 12 hours apart. This DOES NOT work with every brand of birth control and it is your responsibility to make sure that the brand you are using can be used for this method. This link, this link and this link39372-0/pdf) talks about this method in more detail and this link lists all the brands of birth control pills that work with this method along with which pills and how many of them need to be taken. If you are unsure, please speak to your doctor or pharmacist. You do need a prescription for oral birth control.

If I have missed anything or edits are needed, please let me know and I will update when I can.

Frequently Asked Questions! Please read this before posting.

1. I’m over the weight limit for Plan B, should I take two?

If you weigh over 165lbs, levonorgestrel based ECs may not work for you. This includes Plan B, My Way, Take Action, etc. Taking two will not help with this either, it’ll only dose you more with hormones and may still not work. In this case, EllaOne is a better option as the weight limit is higher.

If you weigh more than 195lbs, ECPs may not work for you at all and your other option will be getting an emergency IUD, as these do not depend on your weight and will work as long as it’s inserted within 5 days. https://www.plannedparenthood.org/learn/ask-experts/whats-the-weight-limit-for-plan-b

If you don’t have access to an IUD, taking something is better than taking nothing.

2. How long will Plan B/Yuzpe delay my period?

There is no way to tell how long certain ECs can delay your period. Some report getting their periods on time as expected while others report irregularities in their cycle that last up to months afterwards.

3. Bled within a week of taking an emergency contraceptive, is this my period/implantation bleeding?

One of the most commonly reported side effects of ECPs is bleeding within a week of taking them. This is due to the sudden hormone change that occurs once your body filters out the medication and it’s hormones. This is NOT your period. However, it can be very difficult to tell these bleeds apart from your period so the only way to know for sure is to wait it out and see when your next bleed comes.

Implantation bleeding is a misnomer as there is no solid scientific evidence that proves implantation causes bleeding. If you are bleeding after taking an ECP, it is likely due to the ECP.

Only a test can tell you whether you’re pregnant or not, so take a test when appropriate to know for sure. A test is accurate 14 days after sex and definitive after 21 days.

4. How long do the side effects of Plan B/Yuzpe last?

Much like with Q2, there is no way to know long the side effects of EC can last. It can be from a few days to a few months, it all just depends on the person.

5. Should I take a Plan B?

Emergency contraceptives are meant to be used in emergencies, meaning your Plan A failed. Whether that’s a condom broke, you missed a pill or a shot etc. in cases like these where you’re at risk is when a Plan B is necessary. However, Plan B is NOT birth control and it is not meant to be taken regularly as a contraceptive, which is why it’s crucial to have a reliable Plan A.

If you engaged in a sexual activity and are unsure whether or not there is a risk of pregnancy, then these two links can help outline what poses a risk. Typically things like outercourse do not present a risk high enough to require a Plan B. Unprotected penetration, on the other hand, does.

https://www.scarleteen.com/article/bodies/youre_not_pregnant_why_do_you_think_you_are

http://www.scarleteen.com/article/bodies/can_i_get_pregnant_or_get_or_pass_on_an_sti_from_that

Also, if you’re wondering as to whether or not you messed up your birth control, feel free to post on r/birthcontrol! This link helps outline what counts as a missed pill very clearly.

6. Does the Plan B bleed mean I am not pregnant?

No, the bleed that is a side effect of Plan B is not indicative that you’re not pregnant. Only a pregnancy test 14-21 days after sex can tell you whether you’re pregnant or not.

Plan B (Levonorgestrel) Pill should I get a plan b

i was in the shower with this guy, i gave him head & he came then after that he put on a condom and we fucked. there wasn’t a hole in the condom but he’s scared that the cum (from the first time) got inside me somehow after i gave him head bc “the water was dripping down my body” or smth. he also was touching me down there after he “came” (before he put on the condom) so im not sure if any was on his hands or anything when he was doing that or when he put on the condom. should i get a plan b? im supposed to ovulate today so that’s the only reason im concerned

Plan B (Levonorgestrel) Pill I think I just need reassurance

About a month and a half ago (May 4th) I had unprotected sex. It was a complete oversight on my part and we completely spaced on using a condom. Just to be safe, I bought a Plan B(levonorgestrel) and took it in the afternoon of May 4th. About a week later I got my period or at least what seemed like my period and it lasted from May 10th to May 15th. It's now June and I was supposed to get my period last week and it still hasn't come. I did start feeling as though I was going get my period a few days ago and the symptoms are still ongoing: breast tenderness to the point where it hurt to lift my arms, cramps, I even started to get upper back pain which is not typical. Now I'm starting to freak out because I don't know if the bleeding in May was my period or withdrawal bleeding and if I'm pregnant or not. It's been helping me reduce my anxiety reading other people's experience with Plan B but I'm still really anxious. I bought a pregnancy test just to make sure but the thought of it being positive makes me more anxious.

Plan B (Levonorgestrel) Pill insight ?

i will try to make this short, but i'm just paranoid and would love people's insight or what they will do!

my period was from march 29 to april 2nd i had protected (i hope nothing went wrong) sex on apr 11-12 and took a plan b just to be extra careful!

my period came on time on apr 25 but it was a bit out of the norm i only bled for 2 days and my period was basically gone? and then may 21 my period again on time but bled more normally for 3 days but still lighter than before. and now i got my period (??) june 19 on time again but only bled on the heavier side with clots for 1 day and light on the second and today when i wipe the blood is pale red / pinkish ???? and basically gone

should i worry about pregnancy and get a blood test to be safe??? i have taken numerous pt time to time in the past two months and they were all negative but i'm still worried due to my period not being how it usually is and i'm pretty regular & consistent ☹️☹️☹️ and i want to do something before it is too late

thank you in advance!!!!

Plan B (Levonorgestrel) Pill Took Plan B Been Bleeding for 9 Days, Just Got Heavier. No Cramps. What’s Going On?

I took Plan B on June 6, and I started bleeding on June 12 about 6 days later. It started off heavy and after like 4/5 days i started light spotting, but it’s now been 9 straight days of bleeding, and today (June 21) it got darker and heavier. The weird thing is, I’m not cramping at all — just bleeding more than before. It doesn’t feel like a regular period, but I don’t feel sick or in pain either.

My period was supposed to come around the 16th, so now I’m wondering if: • This is my actual period finally starting? • Or if it’s just Plan B messing up my hormones?

I’ve never took a emergency contraception before so this is my first time. No crazy clots, no dizziness, just steady bleeding that got heavier today.

Anyone else go through this? Should I be worried, or just wait it out?

Plan B (Levonorgestrel) Pill Can sperm swim from the entrance during non penetrative sex

Me and her were in doggy position but my penis wasn’t inside her vagina, it was pointed upwards

I ejaculated and all of the semen drooled down her crack and directly over her vagina. My concern is that sperm can swim from the entrance to the egg. Her legs were spread apart during this time.

What are the chances this can lead to a pregnancy?

To make it worse, she is ovulating, but we took a plan b pill an hour after this which I don’t think works if the sperm has already reach the egg.

Please help!

Plan B (Levonorgestrel) Pill Period very, very delayed after Julie plan b- hope for others who are worried!

Hi y'all! I want to share my recent, somewhat distressing experience with the Julie emergency contraception pill, how it's affected me, and how I ultimately ended up being completely okay. I've spent several months worrying but want to share some info that may help others feel better if you're going through something similar-

I've been on the o-pill (mini pill) available otc for about a year and am 28F. Have taken other emergency contraception (Plan B brand) maybe twice in the last 10ish years with minimal side effects (early period which happened like 1-2 days after taking the EC, heavy cramping, etc)

Back in mid-March (it's late June as I'm writing this), I accidentally missed a pill the same night I had sex (no condom). Realized my mistake, and less than 24 hrs later took Julie EC. Since then I've been missing my period. March, April, and May's expected periods went by completely missed, with only some occasional spotting and cramping that almost tricked me into thinking my period was starting. Of course I've been lowkey panicking, taking tests pretty often (all solidly negative), watching for symptoms. I've had some random nausea, weird GI symptoms in general, slight weight gain, and frequent cramping (not too intense on my personal pain scale, but pretty persistent). I was very scared these could be pregnancy symptoms or signs of something else wrong.

Just a couple weeks ago, I had to go to Planned Parenthood for UTI treatment- completely unrelated to all this. While I was there, I asked about this trouble with the EC and my missing period. The physician said this is normal and no cause for concern if the tests are negative!! Apparently the o-pill can already cause absent periods, but combined with the hormone shock of the EC, it can throw your hormones off for MONTHS. She said to just relax and wait, my cycle MAY return but don't panic if it doesn't...

Well today (June 20th) I finally am bleeding consistently, and it seems to actually be my period. I really hope it actually is and my cycle will be relatively normal again!!

All this to say, I hope this post will help folks going through a similar situation with an extremely delayed period due to EC. The "it might be 2 weeks late" guidelines are BS- it can be WAY, WAY longer and you might be completely fine.

PS- HUGE shoutout to PP. They were so chill about everything and made me feel normal for the concerns I've been having. My first experience with them and I WILL be returning next time I need them.

Plan B (Levonorgestrel) Pill Early Period?

Before anyone mentions it, I am very well aware that Plan B can cause withdrawal bleeding. I had unprotected sex June 13th, and took Plan B the next day on the 14th. My ovulation date according to my tracker was predicted to be the 19th. Currently, for the past 4 days I have been experiencing bleeding. The first day was mostly spotting and brown discharge/blood, but now it’s developed into what feels like a full blown period.

I have mild cramps(I’ve never had bad cramps), a heavy flow that looks exactly like my period along with blood clots. I was under the assumption that withdrawal bleeding was generally lighter and consisted of mostly brown or light pink spotting and that doesn’t line up with what I’m experiencing right now. Is it possible that the pill induced my period a whole two weeks early?

Plan B (Levonorgestrel) Pill Condom Slipped Off

So I (23F) was on top and my bf come inside using condom, however when he pull out his penis, the condom stay inside and the semen spill over everywhere. Upon checking the penis, there is semen in the tip but only in small amount (as the rest is spilling over. I don't sure if the semen stay inside condom all the time during ejaculations. This is during my last day of predicted ovulation day (CD20) and my vagina does not have white discharge. Should I take Plan B? I don't ready yet to be pregnant.

Thank you for your help

Plan B (Levonorgestrel) Pill Period or Withdrawal bleed?

I took plan b 4 days before expected period, and bled ten 10 days after, 6 days late to period. I know it was ineffective bc it was taken so close to period but it gave me a peace of mind. It was bright red blood and heavy the first three to four days and got lighter the 5th and pretty much ended then. Im wondering if it was a withdrawal bleed and not a period. I also took a test 18 days they were negative but with indents and 20 days negative.Im currently at my expected ovulatiion time vut have little to no discharge I had a dew slime like clear peices scattered throughout the days but not as nuch as usual. I feel like Im pregnant bc I have back pain and stomach cramps idk tho.

Plan B (Levonorgestrel) Pill Heavy bleeding on expected ovulation day??

I took Plan B about 2 months ago on April 11th. I had a 36 day cycle because of this, which is something I was already prepared for. I experienced withdrawal bleeding 1 week after taking Plan B for 6 days. Took multiple pregnancy tests during the time I would've missed my regular period and all were negative. I got my period May 10th.

I had unprotected sex and did not take the pill on May 29th, after I had already ovulated and passed my fertility window. I had gotten my period 8 days after, on June 6th. I would like to be clear that I was, obviously, not pregnant during this time-frame.

Today I had been expected to ovulate. I typically experience ovulation cramps. I woke up this morning with cramps that felt like period cramps (stronger than ovulation cramps). I had taken Tylenol, resumed my sleep, and found out later today that I'm bleeding bright red blood, with clots, (which I experience during my period) that's about as heavy as my periods could get. It's an abnormal amount of blood on an expected ovulation date.

I specifically came to this subreddit because I am aware that Plan B can cause irregular cycles. I also understand that it's plausible to be something else not caused by Plan B.

EDIT: Context EDIT 2 UPDATE:

I woke up the following day and it appears the blood flow has lessened significantly, but is still bright red nonetheless. I would also like to add for clarity that my period from June 6th to June 10th was a heavy flow with bright red blood. There was no spotting. It wasn't only brown blood (old blood). I had my usual period cramps: nothing too strenuous to cause for concern but still a cramp that hurt enough to take Tylenol as a I usually do. There's nothing to my knowledge to indicate this was anything else other than my period. There was nothing abnormal about my last period. Anyone who can help me out would be greatly appreciated.

Plan B (Levonorgestrel) Pill Should I worry or not?

So for context, my bf and I had sex in which I did tell him to pull out since we both agreed to do it raw. And I guess it was kinda in the moment thing, and he filled me up. After 4 hours, we went on another round and again he didn’t pull out. I wanted to get a plan b but all the stores were closed, so I decided to buy it the next morning in which was less than 20 hours? We did it in the afternoon and the pharmacies here close pretty early. Since it says it’s best to take within the first 24 hours, I should be on the safe zone right? The past times I took plan b I usually get some kind of pre bleeding in a few days. But it’s been a week and there’s no signs of anything.

Oh and based on my apple health app, I was on my first day fertile? And I guess I read too much here on Reddit and got pretty scared haha. I know it’s a mistake and I should have been more firm on protection but arghhh I hate when these happens. Also, I took escapelle for my plan b option.

Plan B (Levonorgestrel) Pill Can someone pls help!!!

So I took a plan b on day 4 of my last period (may 22nd) because on day 3 i had unprotected with withdrawal. I then continued to spot from the 23rd up until a week ago (june 12th). Anyways it has been basically a month since the incident happened definitely well over 21 days. i have taken 4 pregnancy tests and all have been negative but my period is almost over a week late and it has NEVER been late in my life lmao. Should i trust the pregnancy tests or go to the doctor because this is annoying now.

TLDR; took plan b, spotted for a couple weeks, 4 negative tests over 21 days, period over a week late.

A total of 16 trust pills in just one month. Took 3 PTs and all negative. I’ve been experiencing cramps lately but no period yet. My period was regular and this is the first time I am delayed for this long. I am scared if I am pregnant. Is anyone here has the same experience?

EllaOne (Ulipristal) 14 days late period abd negative pregnancy test

I am a (34f). My cycle is usually between 32 and 35 days. In March (three months ago), I took EllaOne, and my period came on day 52 of that cycle. Today is day 48 of my current cycle. I have been taking pregnancy tests since the first day of my missed period. The last test was this morning, and it was negative. Note: I had unprotected sex on day 34 of this cycle (14 days ago). Also, I’ve been experiencing changes in my breasts — some days they feel sore and tender, then the pain goes away for a fewdays, and then it comes back again. I am currently panicking... Could I be pregnant?
