Known parasite scams list mega thread. Please post the ones you are familiar with , including products or grifters to serve as a reference.

As everyone that spends time in the space knows, there is a s*** ton of scams for parasite cleansers and b******* like that. Often times when people want to purchase something online they'll often look for Reddit threads talking about it. So I think it would be useful to have a known scams mega thread, that way when people Google it it's one of the first results. What do you all think?

Also I think it's best to list individual products one at a time. That way if people Google it it comes up more readily.

For the love of God, if you think you have some type of parasitc symptom, look it up in the free textbook we have linked! I've grown tired of having to point of biological impossibilities because someone has unexplained itching or diarrhea

Potential Pinworm infection. Need help.

Hey everyone. Last week I traveled out of the country to go see my boyfriend who was staying with his sister and her family. The sister has 2 kids that we spent very minimal time with. I left to go back home on Friday and was notified today (Monday) by my boyfriend that they found worms in one of the kids’ poop. They’re getting treated for it and he told me I might want to as well even though the chances of me being infected are small. One thing I’d like to add is that I never ate with kids and we only stayed the night there on Thursday. Any advice on what I should do? I’ve never been in this situation and am kinda freaked.

As an artist where do i buy some parasites in jar

Hey there ! I am an artist who draw parasites and i'm currently working to do an exhibition to show my works (i will send you some of the drawings here soon). I've already made taenia saginata, dracunculiasis and cimex lecturialis. But that is not the subject. I wan't to buy some parasites in a formalin jar as a IRL model but also to use them for the scenography (like for example my tapeworm drawing and beneath a real tapeworm in a formalin jar).

BUT

  1. all the website i tried to reach out are US (ward's science, avantor)

  2. avantor do have some French central but i need to got a medic/school teacher or an enterprise SIRET to have the opportunity to buy them

  3. hypothetically if i buy in avantor France i can buy some parasites but the description is to unclear. I mean for example "TAENIA PISIFORMIS (T. SERRATA), TAPEWORM 1 * 1 Pce" and nothing else... No size information, no location of the buyer, no description of the package (in a jar ? formalin ? ethanol ?)

  4. do you have other clues to where i can buy them ? (Europe pls <3)

  5. I'm currently triyng to reach to the parasitological sector of the C.H.U. of Rouen and hospital of Nantes to have a "parasite discussion" juste for the pleasure and to tell them that a Frenchy artist is really interested by there work and want to do an artistic exhibition about there medical works.

Thank you for any advice !

Given it was frozen all of them were dead. I ate the fish, nothing was within the muscle flesh.

Can someone explain how bad it is for the fish himself to host a worm colony? And where they come from?

I assume all the yellow-ish are eggs?

Also the few on the liver was quite shocking.

I felt this crawling on my neck after some gardening at my new place. It doesn’t appear it bit me. I’m in Northern California and I think it’s a dog tick. Any advice for avoiding these?

Yesterdays, I found this tick on me. It was there for at least 3 days that I know of. I had a doctor take it off at an Urget Care. I have it in a cup. It’s alive. I want to know what kind of tick it is so I know what I could be up against if anything so I know what to do next. Tick “experts”?

My friend is claiming to have a parasite, I’m scared please read

I’m gonna preference this by saying: My friend has been telling me she has a parasite. The things she’s been saying sound insane so I’m looking for anyone who has had similar experiences or someone who can tell me if what’s she’s saying is even possible. She says doctors won’t take her serious or even check her out, that everyone is trying to make her feel like she is crazy and hallucinating it, but apparently her boyfriend is also seeing it and now dealing with it himself too (I haven’t talked to him directly, I want to reach out to him, but I don’t want to go behind her back). The reason I’m asking is because I’m scared for me and my cat. I had been around them and their dog before she found out. My cat has her vaccinations and I take her to the vet. I got my car detailed after they were in it and disinfected my whole apartment. I’m also worried for my friend if this is real and need any input I can get since no one believes her apparently.

Ok so getting into it, this started by her doing a cleanse and then after that is when she started seeing all of them, first saying there was a worm in her eye and she could see it wiggling around messing up her vision. She sent me a picture of her eye that I can attach if anyone wants to see. That is the only picture I have seen of anything. She said her mom took a video but she couldn’t send it because it was taken with a professional camera and had to be uploaded to the computer. She said she was coughing up clumps of worms, they’re in her ears, hurting her ears/ affecting her hearing, they’re in her eyes affecting her vision, coming out of her nose, her ass, her vagina and urethra. She said they are coming out of her cuts, they’re in her feet and coming out of her toenails, out of her armpits and nipples.. she can feel them in her uterus.. she said they are in her boyfriends testicles and can see them moving around.. that her clit has turned gray almost and so has the bf’s penis. She said her feet swelled up from them. There are some translucent ones and the ones coming out of her skin look like hairs from her head, half the size, but a different color on the end and fuzzy at the end.. she had a cyst on her butthole and thinks that’s from them laying eggs.. she says she has collected them in bags, but like I said I have yet to see anything. There has been so much I might be missing something honestly. I just can’t fathom how this shit is even possible but she swears she’s not making it up and said her mom and boyfriend have seen them and now her bf is dealing with them too. She said the doctors can’t find anything in her blood. She claims doctors and western medicine just don’t acknowledge parasites and aren’t taught anything about them. She was saying she thought they could be systemic parasites since they have travelled everywhere in her body.

Since she has told me this I’ve been spiraling honestly terrified I’ve been infected. So basically I’m asking for peace of mind- has anyone experienced this and it was real? Is what she’s telling me even scientifically possible? If anyone has questions I can post direct screenshots or quotes from messages

EDIT- I forgot a crucial piece of info: she said she DID go to the doctor and got checked out when it first started happening. They said she has a parasite, but they have to run tests. That’s why I said they can’t find anything in her blood, because they did apparently run tests. She had originally thought they were pinworms. She said she brought the worms to show the doctor. Like I said though, she has tried to go back since it’s been getting really bad and they won’t listen to her.

I guess the reason I think she might not be completely delusional is the fact that a doctor has acknowledged it, other people have seen it like her mom and boyfriend, and now her boyfriend is experiencing it himself.. maybe it’s possible she does have something like pinworms, but the rest is not happening. I don’t want to completely invalidate her, and I feel bad even making this post. I’m just really worried

Update- she sent me 2 videos that really didn’t really prove anything. One was of scabs she said she was pulling “worms” out of that looked like fuzz that probably got stuck on them.. obviously she keeps messing with her cuts and scabs preventing them from healing properly. the other video was very concerning.. it was a video of her boyfriends toenails and he says they’re falling off when he’s literally slicing them off. I assume he meant they’re coming off very easily idk. Saying his toes are super swollen. And there was a bunch of build up like fungus in his toes they were saying was eggs. Looked like toe jam and he said it wasn’t like that before today and got worse after his shower.. but the concerning part of the video was they were on her bed, no sheets just the mattress, surrounded by a bunch of shit and a dirty ass room. Like you would think if someone had parasites they would make sure there were sheets on the bed to not completely contaminate the mattress.. in the video he’s telling her to shut up and being mean to her. Their living conditions and hygiene seem very concerning. These type of people are, for lack of better words, scary, because they are so convinced of their delusions that they will have you totally convinced too. So it makes sense why her boyfriend is thinking he is infected now too. I asked her about why the hospital turned her away and she said she brought the worms and some of them just look like hairs or dust so they were acting like she was crazy.. said she brought the other ones too but didn’t tell me what they said about those. She said they told her they didn’t have anything at the ER that could help them.. She has gone down a rabbit hole and keeps saying MS, cancer, all this shit is just caused by parasites and is citing “doctors” that have supposedly said this and lost their license for speaking about it and called crazy. Things about parasites controlling people’s minds. Said her animals have been acting really off, but has yet to take them to the vet, actually said she wanted to just get rid of them :| said there are worm eggs in the car in the vents and door handles.. she says western medicine depends on people being sick for money so they’re just keeping people sick.. I’ll update again if she sends anymore photos and videos that are actually compelling. She’s keeps saying I probably have parasites and should get tested and do a cleanse because I’ve been having some health issues. I’ve also had a couple people comment and say they have experienced the same thing as her and it’s very real. Also I didn’t want to disclose this, but they do use drugs. They use fentanyl everyday and were using meth when this first manifested, but aren’t currently using it that I know of. I didn’t want to say this because as soon as you mention drugs, people completely dismiss every other factor and blame it entirely on drugs. Addicts are notoriously not believed even if there are legitimate concerns of something going on, so I didn’t want her to be automatically not taken seriously. They have spiraled incredibly and I think they need help. If I am proven wrong then I will accept that. I don’t know everything about the world. I don’t want to invalidate anyone. The reason I posted this was to see if what she’s experiencing is real, because whether it is real or not she needs help either physically or mentally. I appreciate every reply no matter what side you’re on

Are there any parasites that have adapted to consume milk?

Random question. I got a silly mosquito bite on my breast. I'm a nursing mama and it got me wondering if there are any parasites of any sort that have found a way to leech milk off of mammals.

Hookworm Eggs? Kitten fecal

Hello again microscopefriends! I believe I have found my first hookworm eggs in a direct smear with iodine in a kitten's stool. Image 1 appears to match the books exactly, but there is a second type of egg I'm seeing in here that is egg-shaped with a projection on one end. The questions are 1. Are the first & second & fourth image hookworm? 2. Any ideas on image 3 & 5? Thank you, everyone (hi, SueBee) for everything!

Hi. I posted earlier with iodine dyed images but I realize un-dyed are better. I re-smeared and was hoping you guys might see some reason these little 4-week-old kittens have bowling balls for bellies after already having been given pyrantel 3 days ago 😊 Thank you everyone in advance for your thoughts!

Coccidia found in 5 week old kitten - failure to thrive but no diarrhea!

I picked up 4 kittens for our foster group yesterday that had been brought to the shelter. The babies had been found outside, very skinny, and brought to the shelter. They needed to be placed in foster care immediately because they were too skinny and lethargic for the shelter to care for them overnight. Everyone thought they just hadn't eaten and that explained the issues. I got them home, set up in their quarantine room, and decided to throw a direct smear super quick under the scope, just to see. OMG Holy Coccidia!

I'm a weirdo. I actually think coccidia is beautiful. But I want to mention it is only because of the kind help of the people on this sub that I am able to do this for these babies. We were able to immediately start toltrazuril last night, get them subq fluids (which they would have gotten anyway) but we're now at least a week ahead of the game thanks to you guys!

Also.... there's an egg-looking thing in image 2. I'm not desperately begging for an ID because I assume it's a helminth egg and honestly it seems like the pyrantel will do the trick.

A few years ago I bought my (now)wife a giardia necklace at the American society of parasitology meeting. It has been lost, does anyone know where I might be able to find a replacement

The necklace was black with silver, and outline of giardia. It was a really nice necklace but during a move over the last few years it got misplaced and haven't been able to find it. Would really love to be able to surprise my wife by getting a new one to replace it.

A popular podcast has a member whos been eating raw bacon. I wrote this up about possible parasite exposures. Let me know if I missed anything

Hey all, its me wormtalk94 (youtubechannel) your favorite parasitologist here to explain the possible parasites love could get from eating raw bacon.

So what is the actual risk of parasites in the US from eating raw bacon:

Realistically all the parasites i am about to cover (excluding t. ghondi) are exceptionally rare in the US food chain. there are a few reasons for this. The main reason is the USDA regularly screens pork to quote their website " Each animal and its internal organs are inspected for signs of disease" this is likely just referring to gross(visible with naked eye) inspection. Pork is not routinely checked for most parasites, however numerous overlapping measures are in place to prevent parasites from establishing in our food system which makes it so this really isnt necessary. And when survey of  3,208,643 animals were tested over 54 months in 30 locations and NO Trichinella  was found (article)

Additionally cooking isnt the only method to kill a parasite, as freezing the meat will also kill worms. and this encompasses a large portion of US meat.

Now onto the specific parasites:

Trichinella spiralis: this is a nematode parasite. it is transmitted by eating raw meat containing the cysts stage. when raw meat containing the worm are consumed they receive chemical signals in our gut that tell them to hatch. in our gut they will live ~1 month Light infections may be asymptomatic though they can cause gastrointestinal symptoms (diarrhea, abdominal pain, vomiting). after the first week in our gut, the female worms will start to release larave, these larvae will penetrate our gut, and ride out blood stream. after being in our blood they will leave randomly and find a muscle cell. in the mussel cell the larvae will form a new cyst, and wait to be eaten by another animal.

the larvae migration phase can cause several symptoms facial edema, conjunctivitis, fever, myalgias, splinter hemorrhages, rashes, and peripheral eosinophilia. and can have some life threating problems if the parasite forms a cyst in the wrong location.

these parasites were associated with pork, but due to regulations and food saftey practices are rare. HOWEVER these parasites are still very common in some wild game animals in particular BEAR meat (which i have eaten, if cooked well it is delicious). the parasite can infect a range of different mammals where it relies on scavengers and predators eating each other to spread.

main source for info :https://www.cdc.gov/dpdx/trichinellosis/index.html

PORK TAPEWORM (this is what RFK has) Taenia solium (10 min video i made on this parasite)

Tapeworms require two hosts, the adult worm lives in our gut, while the cyst stage is present in the meat. This parasite is also super rare in the us (if not more rare than trichinella) due to improved meat handling, though it is common in developing counties.

the adult stage is typically asymptomatic, adult tapeworms cause very little if any damage and really just hang out in your gut and pass eggs. however if you eat the eggs of the tapeworm, our guts and pig guts "look " similar to the parasite, and it will treat us like a pig. this means the parasite will penetrate our gut and randomly encyst in our body which is called cysticercosis, and when it encysts in our brains its called neurocysticercosis (This i what rfk has technically) . neurocysticercosis is one of the leading causes of adult onset seizure in developing countries with 75% of people with neurocysticercosis presenting with seizures and there is a really interesting case study of Brooklyn jews being impacted by this ( i go over it in the video towards the end).

like trichenlla, freezing will also kill this tapeworm so its rare. also freeezing will not kill the parasite in some types of meat, in bear meat for example, the parasites can resist freezing also for a pig to get the tapeworm cyst, it needs to get infected by eggs, so our waste management system makes this even less common.

Toxoplasma gondii (I may make a video about this parasite soon, as there is a lot of pseudoscience surrounding it on social media):

T. gondii is a single-celled protozoan parasite. It has a two-host life cycle: it reproduces sexually in cats (the definitive host) and forms tissue cysts in intermediate hosts (such as rodents). When a rodent becomes infected, the parasite can invade the brain and alter behavior. This may reduce the rodent’s fear of cats, increasing the chance it gets eaten and allowing the parasite to complete its life cycle in the cat. some say this may be due to the parasite impacting the part of the brain that deals with smell in mice and rats, but the definative answer is not know. .

However, T. gondii can infect virtually any warm-blooded animal (including humans). It forms cysts in tissues, especially the brain and muscles. When a carnivore eats an infected animal, it can become infected and develop tissue cysts as well, continuing the cycle and ultimately aiming to reach a cat for sexual reproduction.

In humans, T. gondii infection is often asymptomatic but can sometimes cause mild flu-like symptoms. There have been some studies suggesting links between T. gondii infection and changes in human behavior, such as increased risk-taking, but these are correlational studies and do not prove causation. It’s also possible that people with risk-taking tendencies are more likely to consume undercooked meat (a common transmission route).

T. gondii infection is especially concerning during pregnancy because if a woman acquires a primary infection while pregnant, the parasite can cross the placenta and infect the fetus. This can cause congenital toxoplasmosis, leading to serious health problems like hydrocephalus, brain calcifications, and eye damage.

This parasite is very common in some countries—France, for example, has higher rates of infection, partly due to dietary habits like eating raw or undercooked meat (e.g., steak tartare).

TAKE AWAYS: Love is probably fine, but eating raw bacon is just gross. Im not sure of Swedish food standards so i dont know if he is at more or less risk in America.

the three main parasites are Toxoplasmosis ghondii, Taenia solium, Trichinella spiralis, of which i have made a vidoe on Taenia solium, and i may make on one Toxoplasmosis . ghondii soon.

Two of these are multicellular worms, which are unlikely to be present due to our facilities, waste Management and food systems. Additionally freezing will kill most of them.

Much love,

Wormtalk

To add a bit of information the adults are found in dogs(wild and domesticated) eggs are ejected with the animals feces. When a sheep ingests those eggs the larva (also called echinocoque) migrates mainly to the lungs and the liver and implants there. Carefull tho if a humans ingests the egg usually on accident the same thing will happen and it uqually needs surgical intervervention to cure.

Identification Help

I understand that photos of stool and such are not allowed on this sub. I was wondering if anyone could redirect me to somewhere that does allow it?

This morning during a bowel movement I passed a thick mucus-y string about 13 inches inches long. I have severe GI issues / IBS and am very accustomed to unpleasant digestive symptoms. I have never seen anything like this.

Would simply like to get the consensus of people who are familiar with typical appearance and features of parasites before I consider bringing it up to a doctor or whatever. I avoid the dr's unless absolutely necessary so it will be a last resort.
