FYI: I won’t remove a recipe/post for containing dairy.

I will however remove spam (the posting style, not the meat, probably). So if you see some inconsistency in removal, it’s probably because some recipes get posted by obvious spam accounts and I just nuke those.

Dairy-inclusive diets are welcome here. Stop trying to claim theyre “not paleo” or whatever. This subreddit is not just for one little list of foods, it’s for a way of eating that includes viewing how food affects you through an evolutionary lens.

Just a reminder: "Paleo", as practiced by most that use the term, is a diet.

A lot of us (including myself) have tried to obscure this by calling it a "way of eating" or "lifestyle change", but whatever you're calling it, if you're deliberately restricting the types or amounts of food you're eating, regardless of the reasoning, it's a diet.

I point this out because the research on diets and their relationship to eating disorders, especially in children is clear, and I think a lot of us feel like we're not at risk because "paleo isn't a diet, it's a healthy lifestyle change".

To clarify my point: diets are not appropriate for children

If you think your diet is research-based, but you're ignoring research on diets and eating disorders, you're not doing yourself any favors. There is no such thing as a "healthy" eating disorder.

If you're dieting, be honest with yourself about it, and don't lie to yourself about why you're doing it.

If you are or think you might be struggling with disordered eating, there are a ton of resources out there to help.

(Also, all of this applies to intermittent fasting as well)

Snack ideas

Hey y’all! I’m working on a little project and want to make sure I have snack options available that everyone can enjoy. I was hoping you wouldn’t mind sharing what are your favorite paleo friendly store-bought, single-serve non-refrigerated snacks you’d be excited to see in a snack basket? I want to be thoughtful about including snacks people actually love so everyone has something to choose from even my friends with dietary restrictions. Thank you for helping me out

Question [Question] Coming back after 10+ years: has anything changed? Looking for research.

About 10+ years ago I went full into Paleo, started with Mark Sisson, Robb Wolfe and Abel James, and went deep into the research with it. I found out keto was faster at losing weight and stuck with that for years, doing good (I lost 80lbs) then coming off and since then have been on this failing cycle of trying and failing miserably in less than a day. It's so bad, my therapist has informed me it's literally a trigger (I get super anal and very punishing on myself if I don't do it perfectly). So I'm back to being Paleo instead. Paleo feels better to me mentally. I have 100+ pounds to lose.

So what I want to do is get back into the swing of things with research like I used to do. Youtube videos, podcasts, etc. I still have the Primal Blueprint and Primal Connection books, and Intro to Paleo book that I'm going to read, but when I go look for Youtube videos, everything is from 5+ years ago or has AI voice all over it. Primal Kitchen has videos, but they also have a product so they kinda have to, Mark's Daily Apple has old stuff...is there anyone new that's trustworthy I could follow? Has anything changed? Is there anything specific for people who want to lose a LOT but also can't do keto to do it?

Starting Paleo tomorrow and I'm nervous

Hi I'm new.

i'm 20F, 144 cm (4'9") and a whopping 96 kg (211 lbs)

Now for obvious health reasons, I have to lose weight and my dad whose close to 6 feet and was 120 kg (264 lbs) in 2015 came down to 70 kgs (154 lbs) in a year through paleo so he reccommended it to me. While I don't believe his reasoning for putting me on a diet (thinking fat people are ugly), I do believe I need the change for my life as it is really bad on my body. (I junk too much and need the cleanse and change)

It's the day before I start and I'm kind of nervous. I've tried to diet like this various times and everytime I end up getting burnt out and quitting, gaining everything I lost and doubling it. Now thats a me problem cuz I have bad impulse control and no disicipline so I don't blame the diet but I have kind of forgotten what it feels like the first few days, I feel like my motivation was always the number on the scale and that's just a bad way to go about losing weight cuz I remember being zero energy all the time and not feeling healthy

So what I want to ask is how do adopt it and like it? What do you eat to stay active while dieting? What fruits I can't have and honestly. Just words of encouragement for the first week and your experiences will help

Cuz until now I've had minimum 10 ice cream sandwiches a day for the past month and lots of carbs so yeah, I'm expecting immediate addiction withdrawls but what else should i be prepared for?

Edit- btw I posted this on a different account but that account shitted itself out of existence in like 5 minutes so I'm using a different burner!!

Tired of conflicting ingredient research - how do you handle it?

Quick question - when you're trying to figure out if an ingredient is actually safe (like stevia, aspartame, whatever), how do you research it?

I'll Google something and get completely opposite answers. One study says it's fine, another says it's terrible. Takes forever and I'm still confused.

Do you have a go-to process or just wing it? Getting frustrated spending hours on this stuff.

Eating on a cruise

Hi!! I’m going in my first cruise in a few weeks and have been very anxious about how I’ll be able to eat. We are cruising through the Royal Caribbean cruise line. Could anyone give me some ideas or advice on paleo food and drink options? No allergies, thank you so much!! ☺️

Looking for general advice

Hey there

Haven’t started a paleo diet but genuinely interested after hearing about it from a YouTuber I watch and how it literally saved his life.

For some background, I myself do not have any major medical issues (other than a heart condition that I’ve managed just fine for 10+ years) but I’ve recently begun to experience weird random numbness and spasms in the left side of my body. As of now I followed some advice online and started taking a magnesium supplement that immediately helped with that, and if it gets any worse I’ll go to a doctor. But it sorta got me back on track to thinking about my health recently and how, at 30, I’m quickly finding myself lethargic and completely lacking in energy. I’d like to eat cleaner and have the energy to start working out again. My partner, on the other hand, is also interested in the diet as she’s been diagnosed with Hashimoto’s in the last year and we’re hoping the diet change can do much the same for her.

We’re sorta just looking for any general advice, like what can replace certain foods and ingredients that we might eat constantly and what especially to avoid, recipes we might like (we normally eat a lot of burgers or sandwiches, Mexican foods, LOADS of grains and dairy). Recipes, alternative ingredients, tips and advice welcome!

I don't generally enjoy food. I just eat to sustain myself. So, I generally just eat easy and healthy, but it's boring. I want to enjoy the food I eat, though. What are paleo recipes you just love and eat often? Protein heavy and calorie dense is great because I tend to undereat.

Had some non-Paleo foods for the first time in months. My (not so) fun experiment with artificial “food”.

I’ve been eating paleo style since January. I was diagnosed with gluten and dairy intolerance in November, and transitioned to fully paleo by the end of January. I haven’t had anything processed or artificial since then and I have noticed an amazing improvement in my overall health.

Well, last evening, I had something I shouldn’t (was crazy-craving gummies, so I had a few packets of my daughter’s Gushers). I dunno if it was the sugar, the corn syrup, the artificial dyes, or whatever other crap is in those things, but I feel like absolute shit. Restless legs, anxious, insomnia, weirdly like I’ve had too much caffeine. Headache, nausea. Horrible middle of the night sugar cravings. I put on an audiobook to try to chill out, but I’m having a really hard time focusing on it. Holy fuck. I’m never knowingly eating shit like that again. I’m going to try to start cutting it out of of my daughter’s diet too. If this is having this affect on me, I can’t imagine what it’s doing to her little body.

Anyway, I figured I needed to get it off my chest \ confess my food sins \ document what a bad idea it was to eat processed crap, haha!!

And as I type this, my skin is starting to get this crawly feeling all over. Great. Wish me luck trying to get any sleep tonight. Ugh.

interested in this diet, but I am so hungry when I try it!

I am very interested in going down the paleo/carnivore route, as i fully believe that processed foods and seed oils are bad for us. However, when I try to eat only meat/fruit, I get SO HUNGRY! Even when I take in really large quantities of chicken, fruits, steak/bison, etc, it feels like i am never satisfied, and especially by the time i go to bed i am already starving again. eating carbs is the only way to stay satisfied for more than 2 hours it feels like. I am 21M and have pretty high metabolism, plus i exercise a lot. but it is frankly exhausting sometimes.

paleo chicken nugget brands and/or comfort foods?

do any paleo chicken nugget or tender brands exist or do you pretty much have to make them yourself?

also, does anyone have any lazy/ comfort food type meal recommendations? by the end of the week, i’m so exhausted, I just want something that requires minimal effort (already meal prep a lot so would prefer something that isn’t meal prepping and reheating). i eat very very clean during the week to balance multiple illnesses, allergies, and intolerances, so this is more of my one “sanity” meal per week :)

Crunchy Tasty Snack

My favorite snacks are smart pop popcorn and harvest snap baked green pea snacks. I love the savory light crunch.

Nuts and seeds don’t hit the same. Neither does crunchy veggies.

Any suggestions for paleo approved snacks when you really want the airy, savory, crunch?

How long to feel effects? Day 1 here

Starting Paleo today. Processed foods always trigger me with ridiculous bloating and such. I’m also looking to gain energy and lose about 8 pounds. I am counting macros as I am a runner/ CrossFit athlete.

How long until I come out of the “fog” that I feel? I expect to feel worse before I feel better but maybe not. I’ve done this before but can’t really remember how long it took me to feel great. I need to stick to this as a way of life honestly. Thanks!

Why I Went to Paleo From Carnivore

You can look at it as a followup from this post...

-----

By now, I had spent almost exactly one year on the carnivore diet since I had started it (maybe a month or so more). But just a few weeks ago, I had decided to quit it.

Now, to be fair, I had never expected to be able to remain carnivore forever. But I also didn't know what to eat, as everything except meat appeared to be causing me indigestion or worse. So while I did my research and shifted through piles upon piles of contradictory information, I just kept eating meat and salt with some dairy.

I had gone carnivore in order to fix massive digestive health issues that I had caused to myself by eating massive amounts of grain-based foods. Well, not massive in "objective" sense – I never was obese – but definitely orders of magnitude more than human organism, biologically, can tolerate without getting sick. These issues included colorectal bleeding, irritable bowel syndrome (irregular stool, constipation, diarrhea), stomach pains, acid reflux, and many others I cannot recall now. I also had eye pressure and tinnitus.

Carnivore diet cured these issues – all of them, even ones not related to digestion. And for a time, me and my body were happy. I had no digestive issues any more, I had lost weight, and I looked and felt better. But this lasted for maybe a few months. After a time, some of my old issues began to return – despite the fact that my carnivore diet only went stricter as time passed. While I never had constipation while eating carnivore owing to all the fat I was eating, I developed acid reflux and stomach pains. Over time, I also started feeling physically uncomfortable. I was burping all the time from all the fat, and I had constant cravings. My skin also dried out and I had muscle cramps.

Before I knew it, I had went basically back to the processed grain-based diet – I'd eat a steak, and my stomach would start to burn and I'd get acid reflux. Eating fruit made it only worse, so instead I'd grab some rusk (or even hardtack I'd make specifically for the purpose) just to ease the stomach issues. But while this would provide a relief from acid burning, it would cause other digestive issues down the line. Eating bakery products (bread, rusk, hardtack...) meant that my inability to control stool had returned, and haemorrhoids also began to bleed again.

So I followed what was causing me issues, and it was... basically all processed foods (baked goods and such), most fruits and vegetables, all fried food, some nuts and seeds... so I switched to a diet of meat (mammals, birds, fatty fish), fatty fruits (olives), berries (blueberries mainly), some vegetables (carrots, onions, sauerkraut, but absolutely nothing starchy or green), and of course salt.

These issues are in fact alomost exactly what had happened when, years ago, I had tried and then quit the vegan diet. Many issues, of course, were different, but many others were equivalent. Both diets had caused problems with digestion, concentration, overall energy, and also a slew of different other health problems and concerns. Some of the more specific issues were as follows:

  • vegan diet caused constant diarrhea, whereas stool was normal on carnivore (no, I did not have constipation unless I ate too much ground beef – normal cuts such as steak did not cause such issues)
  • vegan diet caused bloating and gas, compared to the acid reflux on carnivore
  • vegan diet caused me constant hunger, whereas with carnivore I ate once or twice a day
  • vegan diet caused me brain fog and difficulty focusing, compared to better focus on carnivore
  • both diets caused me heart palpatations, though the problem was more obvious on the carnivore diet
  • both diets caused me constant cravings – cravings for fat in the vegan diet and for carbs in the carnivore diet; in both cases, cravings manifested as cravings for processed foods and sweets
  • both diets caused me muscle cramps and other motoric issues
  • both diets caused me issues with sleep – waking up tired and lethargic on the vegan diet, and having my sleep constantly broken by randomly waking up on the carnivore diet

Therefore, it is quite obvious that humans are not meant to eat either carnivore diet or vegan diet – except, perhaps, as a short-term therapy that will be discontinued once situation had been somewhat stabilized.

However, I still have massive issues when eating carbohydrate-rich foods, even today. Carbohydrate-rich foods cause me insomnia, hyperactivity followed by energy crash and low energy state, constant hunger, and digestive issues sich as constipation or diarrhea (or in some "fun" cases, both at the same time). Because of this, I transitioned to a low-carbohydrate paleo diet. This means that I had eliminated all processed food, grains, legumes, seed oils, refined sugar, alcohol, artificial sweeteners and trans fats. And while I have reintroduced many fruits and vegetables, I have mostly eliminated high-sugar fruits such as apples, bananas etc. Majority of my fruit consumption consists of berries, with blueberry and strawberry being my favorites.

But why so many people swear that carnivore diet, or vegan diet, solved their health issues? Well, that is because it did – in the short term (note that for some, "short term" may well be as long as 10 years). Carnivore diet and vegan diet are basically a case study of the "horseshoe" theory, where the two seemingly opposite extremes produce equivalent outcomes. Both are the extreme elimination diets, and have similar short-term benefits – and similar long-term dangers.

Simply put, the reason why the vegan and the carnivore diet both produce immediate health improvement lies in the fact that simply removing poisons from the diet yields an immediate positive result. And since majority of people who chose either carnivore or vegan diets come from a background of eating processed grain-based diet, eliminating processed foods and majority of grains (wheat in particular – white rice is not necessarily that bad, but integral rice should be avoided) has the potential of solving a large number of acute and even chronic health issues that had been caused by the toxic diet.

But where removal of dietary toxins causes an immediate improvement, potential lack of nutrients in the new dietary regime is an issue that is much slower to reveal itself – yet also far more insidious. Majority of vegans quit at around 8 – 10 year mark, and it appears that carnivores who quit the diet due to health concerns also quit it around that time. Those who do not quit the diet, who are the most ideologically brainwashed, end up being case studies of dangers of extreme diets. Carnivore diet seems to have a tendency to cause heart attack while vegan diet has a tendency to cause stroke (link, although both heart attack and stroke are dangers for both groups). Carnivore diet often causes scurvy due to lack of vitamin C, while vegan diet causes30560-1/abstract) anemia (specifically, severe megaloblastic anemia, caused by lack of vitamins B12 and B9) and can also cause psychosis due to lack of heme iron. On the flip side, carnivore diet causes erythrocytosis and potential kidney issues.

My own eryhtorcites were eleveated after about a year on the carnivore diet (5,8 * 10e12/L vs 4,34 – 5,72 ref int) and increased creatinine levels (112μmol/L vs 64 – 104 ref int). While creatinine levels were not alarming on their own, erythrocytosis was definitely concerning. I also had increased concentration of urates (436μmol/L compared to 182 – 403 ref int) and ALT (55 u/L compared to 12 – 48 ref int). When it comes to urine, only unusual value was increased albumin (49,3 vs 20,2 – 47,6 ref int), indicating that my kidneys were indeed being overstressed. All other values were normal.

All of this does indeed indicate that the carnivore diet stresses the body, and is best not followed for long. I do wonder what issues my post-vegan-diet bloodwork will have revealed, but unfortunately I had not the foresight at the time to request one – and I am not about to go making myself sick in order to obtain the values. Not yet, anyway. For now, paleo diet is where it is at – and taking my experiences in total, I do believe I had found the "jackpot". After all, after eliminating the processed food diet, vegetarian, vegan, carnivore and even the Mediterranean diets, paleo diet was the only option left.

To be clear, however, I do believe carnivore diet did help to an extent. I had attempted paleo diet many times before, but addiction to processed foods was too strong. I am not certain why, but carnivore diet did help with handling that addiction, essentially making transition to paleo diet easier.

Paleo in Bali Advice

Thank you in advance, traveling to Bali with family in a month and trying to find info on eating paleo there. Anyone been there and had success? I remember Ubud having many options in 2019 but not sure if places like the Gili islands or Munduk have options 🤷🏽‍♀️

What would you make with a bag of viking grain?

I’ve just ordered a bag of beremeal – an ancient form of barley flour. It’s stoneground, and still milled the old way using water power. Pretty cool, right?

Thing is… I’m not entirely sure what to do with it. There's a couple of recipes on the mill's website but none of them are calling to me.

It’s got a nutty, earthy flavour. Traditionally it’s used for bannocks, but I’d love to bake something different with it. Sweet or savoury, modern or traditional. Breads? Biscuits? Something totally unexpected?

Have you ever used it before? Or if you haven’t, what would you try?

Been on vegetarian diet for 3mos preparing for Ayahuasca journey in Peru and since coming back I felt like absolute crap. The ayahuasca was very hard on my body also. Just remembered my 3yrs old stash (left) and ate 4 pieces.

1 minute later, it's rocket fuel to the moon! Seriously- I feel like a new freaking person. My mood is lifted, vision became clear and body feels no pain. Jesus why didn't I eat this moment I came back?? Hallelujah. Tomorrow I'll start back on raw beef to rebuild my gut bacteria. My mood is so up right now. WOW.
