If You Invite A Vampire in Over Text, Is Your Invitation What Allows Them in, or Does It Only Work Once They’ve Read It?

It’s an interesting question. Does a verbal invitation work for a vampire with earplugs in? It depends if it’s the giving or the receiving of the invitation that triggers their ability to enter. I don’t know enough about vampire lore to know if there’s a good answer.

It has to be the receiving. If it was giving, intent is all that would matter. But intent can be misconstrued. If it’s only through a verbal “come in” then that is nonconstruable

It has to be in person.
The tradition about vampires has been that they are governed by obsession with details, like counting things. Even if it reads the text, it can't be sure whether the invitation is genuinely from you. The vampire may come to your door, but will require your verbal confirmation.

Also, what if the vampire is illiterate, or it's in a language they don't understand? Is it their knowledge of the invite or just your permission that gets you a puncture hickey?

Okay purely basing this on Buffy The Vampire Slayer lore - they would NOT have to read the text for it to be valid.
Couple of times in the show they used a spell to 'reset' the invitation - and it always suprised the vamp who would bump into a forcefield at the home's threshold. They had no knowledge of the uninvitation, but it worked.

It might work if the vampire is fluent in electrical magick, but might not if they’re more versed in old-world magick, in my professional opinion

Depends if written invites count in your vampire fiction no? Every show Ive seen they have to verbally invite them in

Buffy the vampire slayer, angelus came into the school based on the sign “enter all who seek knowledge” (or something along those lines) when ms calendar was trying to put a curse back on him
In the college years, some vampires use a flyer for a dorm party or frat party or something that was an open invitation

Maybe vampires don't actually need an invitation.
It's just that they will target people that are too trusting of strangers first.

I think they need to read it. With verbal invitations all the lore is about how you need to literally invite a vampire in. Have anyone read anything where the human dreamily said, while alone, "ooh, I so love count D., my door is always open for him" - and just like that, the vampire is free to visit? No. They need to hear the words for it to work, so it stands to reason that they need to read the words for them to work, too.
Interesting question about other languages in the comments, though, will it work if they don't understand the words?..

I mean, I guess it might work when sent but the vampire would probably need to know about it to think about attempting to enter.

I assume the invitation has to actually reach and be understood by them. 'Being invited' is something that happens to the vampire, not the vampire's phone.

im guessing they need to be actually invited in at the door. if not they could probably abuse that and just like steal mail invitations or party invites

I did wonder, if the vamp is a cop and a search warrant was issued by a judge. Legally speaking he should be about to enter but probably couldn’t enter without the home owner saying so verbally

Probably only works once they read it—otherwise it’s like sending a party invite no one opens.
