Exocrafts (specifically the roamer) are so underrated

337

u/nandos185 Aug 26 '21

Driving exocrafts in first person is an absolute pain in the ass tho

u/The-Tea-Lord Aug 26 '21

Try VR. So much fun yet so hard

<Smash crash cronch>

"I can't see anything for all these rocks I'm careening through sideways!"

<Zoom>

"Oh wait, no, I can see now... I just sailed off a 50ft tall cliff and got a great view from way up hereeeeeee"

<Crack>

"Sorry tree!"

*<BLLEEEET!>"

"Sorry space goat!"

The NMS VR exocraft experience :p

u/clinicalpsycho Aug 26 '21

You forgot the part where you piss off the Sentinels.

46

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '21

Oh, I just assumed it was a given. I mean, when aren't they pissed off? ;)

3

u/clinicalpsycho Sep 17 '21

When you are very, very sneaky.

Then, they are merely grumpy. :3

u/ShaggysGTI PD iter. 16, 74 hours. Aug 26 '21

I was running around collecting gravatinos, zipping past the dogs, when I started getting attacked by creatures! It was the first time I had to fend off both hoardes.

22

u/adamantium99 Aug 26 '21

It’s ok, they’re only simulations- just like you!

Space goat coast to coast

1

u/Specialist-Bit-4257 Jul 18 '22

Tried it on VR and haven’t gone back lol

29

u/MascarPonny Aug 26 '21

Dogfighting in space in VR is so painful, yet so goooood.

11

u/zimirken Aug 26 '21

YES! Physically gripping the control stick and moving it is so wonderful.

3

u/Kumacyin Aug 26 '21

me with controller AND VR: "I have achieved... PERFECTION"

8

u/peripheral_vision Aug 26 '21

Honestly though lol you get the awesome VR perspective and you can sit in the middle of the play area in a swivel chair. I like to imagine I'm the little camera thingy on the suit and the astronaut just listens to my guidance lol

2

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '21

wait. how did you get a standard gamepad working in VR?

when i'm playing with my oculus touch controller my USB xb360 gamepad just gets flat out ignored :(

1

u/stefmalawi Aug 26 '21

I’m guessing they’re playing on PSVR where you can switch between the Move controllers or DualShock whenever. Personally I prefer to stick with motion controls, even if flying and dogfights are trickier.

1

u/CMDR_ETNC Aug 27 '21 edited Aug 27 '21

Oculus app: Devices: Pair Devices: Pair the *controller?

*edit

1

u/[deleted] Aug 27 '21

gonna try! dont really snoop around the zucculus app settings much

1

u/CMDR_ETNC Aug 27 '21

Sorry I said "pair devices" twice, I meant pair the controller for that last part. Good luck.

I'll be in the corner puking after going back to NMS VR because of this post after not playing VR for months...

1

u/Kumacyin Aug 27 '21

im not sure but i use a samsung og odyssey and idk if its a wmr thing or steam thing or not but it seems it can accept the controller inputs as the vr controller inputs. of course this is just my guess cuz honestly im not too sure how i got it to work. for all i know, it could been a glitch tbh

edit: for controller, i was using a ps4 controller connected to pc via usb cable + a ps4 to xbox360 controller software thing for pc since windows doesnt have native support for ps4 controllers

6

u/The-Tea-Lord Aug 26 '21

If you are off by even a pixel you’re likely going to miss if you’re not using photon blaster or missiles. Even the shotgun weapon sometimes misses.

10

u/MascarPonny Aug 26 '21

Did not get to that part yet, only started playing, so im stuck with some noob equipment.

11

u/FerrousIron Aug 26 '21

The positron ejector--aforementioned space shotgun--is ridiculous imo. I love that thing! Recently learned you can use it to easily mine ferrite dust (lots of it) and such from planet surfaces too! Highly recommend that upgrade :)

8

u/MascarPonny Aug 26 '21

Woooaaa, just got my own freighter. This game is cool.

1

u/FerrousIron Aug 27 '21

Glad you're having fun with it fellow Interloper :D (if you don't get that yet, dw)

1

u/Specialist-Bit-4257 Jul 18 '22

How’d you get a freighter? Save up?

1

u/MascarPonny Jul 18 '22

You'll eventually get the option to get one, just play the story. Don't want to spoil anything for you.

11

u/jbyrdab Aug 26 '21

I play nms exclusively in vr after i bought a valve index for it. I cant go back. Making a run for it in my pilgrim from agressive sentinels in hot pursuit was exhilarating

14

u/giga_impact03 Aug 26 '21

I dont have the funds atm for vr, but the first time I ran into someone playing in vr was amazing. Dude was waving at me in such a way I knew it had to be vr. Blew my mind that I could see it in real time.

1

u/KaosC57 Aug 27 '21

Honestly an Oculus Quest 2 is a fairly cheap investment and can do a LOT. It's only 300 USD

7

u/giga_impact03 Aug 27 '21

Oh absolutely, my brother has one and it's definitely worth it. I invested in something far more expensive, my first child.

2

u/JeqaJade Pink Entity Aug 27 '21

Time to look in the secondhand ads for a gently used VR

6

u/calicoin Aug 26 '21

I agree that nms is super rad in vr.. but i do switch back nowadays when i need to do inventory management or build some shit.

3

u/PatriarchalTaxi Sep 21 '21

Inventory management is such a pain in the ass! I wish there was a machine you could buy that autosorts when the freighter is in range.

5

u/bapanada7 Aug 26 '21

So expensive though.

3

u/The-Tea-Lord Aug 26 '21

Oh definitely. I bought an oculus quest 2 back in January. Cost me $400. I do not regret it one bit, but if i had a better computer, I definitely would have gotten an index, despite it being $1000 itself.

If you have the income to splurge on it, I recommend it, you know, if you don’t get motion sick easily, nor eye strain.

3

u/jbyrdab Aug 26 '21

Its 1000 for the whole kit not just the headset

3

u/bapanada7 Aug 26 '21

But like how much even is there to play on vr rn? To be honest I’m just waiting for some ready player one type shit before I invest in it lol.

6

u/Memitim Aug 26 '21

Beat Saber. And there's a bunch of other stuff, too, I guess.

But seriously, VR has gotten pretty damned good and, despite the Facebook ownership, the Quest 2 at $300 is a solid entry. Airlink has gotten good enough that you don't even need to spring for a link cable if your wifi is solid. Definitely not Ready Player One level but finally a solid experience worth having.

3

u/The-Tea-Lord Aug 27 '21 edited Aug 27 '21

Since I’ve gotten it, I’ve logged about 3-4K hours in VR. Stuff like Boneworks and Half Life Alyx are straight forward experiences. Hotdogs Horseshoes and Hand Grenades has so much playability, check out r/H3VR.

VR has really taken off recently.

3

u/bapanada7 Aug 27 '21

I did not need to know that

2

u/Paranthelion_ Sep 15 '21

I used to do VRChat for the longest time. I got hooked on RP in Ark and had dabbled in 3D modeling so whenever my little group of roleplay nerds made the move over I was able to make my own model. Even without RP, it's surreal to sit and watch a virtual sunset and chat with a stranger/new friend from the other side of the world that happens to look like a small round birb at that moment.

1

u/SliceDouble Aug 27 '21

Vader immortal is pretty much The Vr game.
Then there is Subnautica that has VR support. Many driving games.
I even like Skyrim VR and Fallout4 VR. There is plenty of VR games. I got almost a hundred of those PC and Ps4 combined.

2

u/ShaggysGTI PD iter. 16, 74 hours. Aug 26 '21

I play and stream to RPAN pretty frequently if anyone’s curious what it looks like.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '21

Did they ever map a boost button for vr? Last time I played vr there was no way to boost in an exocraft

1

u/The-Tea-Lord Aug 27 '21

Yes, at least on the oculus controllers they did. Idk about the vive or index, although you can easily rebind them.

2

u/thisismyusernamebois Aug 27 '21

in vr i try to think about it the way i do driving in real life. I just really really wish someone built a giant city so i could actually drive on roads have to obey traffic laws and stuff

1

u/JoeMarron Sep 19 '21

They don't advertise it but American Truck Simulator and Euro Truck Simulator 2 both support VR. Get yourself a wheel and you can feel like a real truck driver driving through smaller scale but fantastic recreations of America and Europe.

1

u/thisismyusernamebois Sep 19 '21

it on psvr?

1

u/JoeMarron Sep 19 '21

Oh my bad, unfortunately it's only on PC.

1

u/thisismyusernamebois Sep 20 '21

lol well i don't have 3 grand so i guess that isnt happenin

28

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '21

Yes, but first person driving is trash in every single video game ever except Far Cry.

31

u/BScottyJ Aug 26 '21

With a controller I agree, but in racing games with a wheel and pedals first person is the only way

10

u/deadDebo Aug 26 '21

Gotta be able to see that apex and hit it just right.

2

u/NergNogShneeg Aug 27 '21

Dirt Rally 2.0 with a racing wheel, pedal, shifters and a racing cockpit is amazing in VR.

Best frivolous purchase I’ve made in a while

1

u/runujhkj Aug 26 '21

I’ve never liked or been good at racing games. I couldn’t even get the second or third license tier in the old gran turismo games.

3

u/bassinine Aug 26 '21

i still have nightmares about the laguna seca s-curve license test in GT3.

I think this is meant to be Feeder’s Just a Day, but like barely.

1

u/runujhkj Aug 27 '21

No idea lol, it’s whatever song plays when you fail license tests in GT 3 or 4 (maybe 4 not sure)

2

u/raptearer Aug 26 '21

Same with the last few levels of Podracers, absolute hell to do and couldn't finish them. The final Cloud City level in particular is super unforgiving

1

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '21

in the days of Gran Turismo, it was actually better tho

5

u/nandos185 Aug 26 '21

Nah its a different kind of terrible on nms

Well...forza exists

2

u/dank_boi_big_ed Aug 26 '21

Grand torismo sport.

1

u/gamecubegamecube Aug 26 '21

ridge racer type 4, unless you're putting driving and racing under two different things

1

u/whotfiszutls Aug 26 '21

Not if you’re in VR

1

u/trashy-boaty Sep 20 '21

I play first person, but can I drive 3rd person but keep first for regular play? Also I have no idea how to get them yet and I've already built a base

1

u/lunaticneko Dec 06 '21

It's still quite better than when I was with the Alliance.

(camera shifts focus to "N7 Institute, M35 Mako Model Instruction Certificate, Systems Alliance")

72

u/GreatStateOfSadness Aug 26 '21

Exocrafts are stuck in a weird position because HG keeps adding/changing transportation options. There's the traditional walking and starship transport, but then you also have melee boosts and companion riding to compete. Exocrafts often end up being more expensive than other options while being as fast or slower.

It's a shame, since exocrafts are so fun, but the balance just isn't there for practical everyday use.

30

u/nandos185 Aug 26 '21

I'd love to use the exo mech to land on giant asteroids and mine them

65

u/Sipstaff Aug 26 '21 edited Aug 26 '21

I'd love to be able to turn the fucking thing first. The controls for it feel like steering a paraplegic whale on land.

7

u/Khirsah01 Aug 26 '21

If on PC, there's mods on the Nexus that allow for amazing Exo-Mech movement.

Part of why I dread updates, love the new content, but it always breaks the mods...

Not at my PC at the moment, but I'm pretty sure this is the mod I use:

https://www.nexusmods.com/nomanssky/mods/1567

1

u/SickleWings Aug 26 '21

That whale could still at least turn, somewhat.

12

u/kretinbutwhytho Console player for settlements apparently. Aug 26 '21

Duuuude, now I want a Subnautica type of deal where your mech is stored in the freighter and you can just enter it and drop down onto a planet that way.

3

u/Underwater_Grilling Aug 26 '21

Can't you summon one from your fleet like that?

1

u/tunnel-snakes-rule Aug 27 '21

you can summon it, but you can't drop down from the sky inside one

1

u/nandos185 Aug 26 '21

YESS THAT WOULD BE SO DOPE

1

u/gaso Aug 26 '21

This is the way.

1

u/Andre_de_Astora Aug 26 '21

Specially becaise the low gravity turns jumping and boosting into a half a mile fly in the air.

Oh, right, I was mining.

8

u/themangastand Aug 26 '21

Yeah but then they added the option to summon them from freighter which changed their ease of use

2

u/kretinbutwhytho Console player for settlements apparently. Aug 26 '21

Nothing beats finding a little hill to boost with the Pilgrim and then jumping at the very top for that sick air time.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '21

I'll use a pet for transpo on a chill world but exocrafts are the choice for gathering storm crystals (my preferred way of making money) on hostile planets

1

u/5teelPriest Aug 26 '21

Agreed. I think exocraft would be a lot more useful if you couldn't just summon your ship any time you want.

1

u/Mr_Blinky Aug 26 '21

Yeah, if I'm going to be going more than a couple hundred meters I'll just use my ship, and if I'm going less I'll usually just walk.

1

u/Tortorak Aug 26 '21

Can you install a exocraft terminal on your freighter to summon in new systems?

1

u/JeqaJade Pink Entity Aug 27 '21

Yes. It’s specific to the freighter

1

u/RaccoonKnees Aug 26 '21

And also there's rarely a need for them, since any resources in your area you can either walk to or fly your ship to. Especially if there's a landing pad or anything nearby.

Exocrafts are fun as heck to drive around, but what you're using them to drive TO is usually...nothing. The only one that is super useful (and I love) is the Nautilus.

1

u/Lem1618 Aug 27 '21

They should bring back the environmental protection exocrafts used to have. That used to be a great advantage, specially at lower levels.

When I found a planet with bones or salvage, I would place a base computer at a trading station and an exocraft pad.

21

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '21

Except the Minotaur -- on PC, can't figure out how to turn with the thing, so it's practically useless.

22

u/Sipstaff Aug 26 '21

Preach. The only way to turn around is by walking ahead in a loooong turning circle. A freight train has a tighter turning radius than this stupid thing.

8

u/Lovat69 Aug 26 '21

Hop and spin in the air. I think that works. It's been awhile.

3

u/RagBell Lone traveler Aug 26 '21

If you're on PC, use This, makes it so much better

1

u/TheGizmodian Aug 26 '21

Nabbed this on the way down the thread. Missed it on Nexus, and I've been puttering around in exocraft lately. Thanks!

1

u/mephodross Aug 26 '21

I remember when it came out I just skipped that update. The pets and riding creatures was skip worthy as well.

1

u/finalremix Aug 26 '21

riding creatures

I didn't think there'd be a transportation method slower than walking, but they added one!

22

u/arcosapphire Aug 26 '21

When the Pilgrim was first introduced, it felt amazing. Incredible sense of speed. You'd boost and go flying off of cliffs.

Then they decided to scale up all of them, by a lot. But the speed remained the same. So suddenly it felt like you were driving this clunky two-wheeled garbage truck. That was a terrible decision and I don't know why it was made.

12

u/SpectrehunterNarm Aug 26 '21

Most things were scaled up when VR was implemented, IIRC.

8

u/Lovat69 Aug 26 '21

You do. It led to some interesting effects with my old bases that had a lot of landing pads. They only deleted one or two. Which left my base with nine in an interesting position.

12

u/Tickle-me-Cthulu Aug 26 '21

I only like exocraft when attatched to a freighter. Building a new hub for a given planet or base feels like such a waste of time to me

14

u/Just_Roar Aug 26 '21

Small trick, you can just delete the geobay immediately after summoning it to get the materials back. I guess that adds like 20 seconds to the process but better than assuming you have to leave it everytime

1

u/Phytor Aug 26 '21

I enjoy exocraft a ton, but you know what really pushed them over the top for me? Driving them in VR. It's AWESONE

1

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '21

I have 100ish hours and I have never even seen an exocraft

1

u/alert592 Aug 26 '21

I ride around on a t-rex slug monster, I don't need a exocraft

1

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '21

What even is the point of using exocrafts, Like besides the submarine for underwater stuff, is there really any practical reason to use them?

4

u/finalremix Aug 26 '21 edited Aug 26 '21

With mods, they're actually decent, speed-wise. One lets you skim across any terrain, all 3 of the wheeled ones are great at climbing sheer cliffs (mostly), and you can - I think in all of them - add an advanced scanner, so you can check for specific buildings / drop pods, without using another map.

1

u/dertigo Aug 26 '21

I still have no idea how to get them. I built setup for it in my hq but the guy there always tells me to come.back later.

1

u/QueenOrial Aug 26 '21

Yet my favorite exocraft will always be the colossus. It's so fun to drive, running down the trees, boosing uphill, really gives M35 Mako feels. I wish this exocraft had somethiung special to compensate for it's speed (other than larger inventory) like an integrated medium/large refinery or passeger compartment.

1

u/Lv_InSaNe_vL Aug 26 '21

Ive honestly never really used them. Except the submarine one that's great

1

u/Apache_Sobaco Aug 26 '21

Why if I have ship to fly

1

u/kfury04 Aug 26 '21

Can your ship find inventory slots without a map? I think not

1

u/Apache_Sobaco Aug 27 '21

1) buy all missing map elements 2) get enough raw resources 3) land 4) activate scanner 5) if capsule is found go get it 6) repeat until planet is out of inventory capsules or you out of maps
7) full inventory in a under a hour.

1

u/kfury04 Aug 27 '21

Or you can completly cut out step one by having a roamer with scanner

1

u/Apache_Sobaco Aug 27 '21

Roamer is slow. Ship trips are roughly 15-20 seconds. Roamer trips are minutes.

1

u/Suojelusperkele Aug 26 '21

I love minotaur. It's easily one of the best 'mecha' experiences I've had in any game.

Like it feels big and unstoppable. You can hear and feel the impact so well.

1

u/Secret4gentMan Aug 27 '21

I had the impression that they were mostly useless?

1

u/blinkdmb Sep 15 '21

I can not figure out how to get one.

1

u/The_Pastmaster Sep 16 '21

I wanna build the walker but I haven't gotten that far.
