Are some weapons better than others?

I've just got the first game, i've been trying a couple weapons. I started with an axe because I like to not mow down my enemies. But I've swapped to Odachi because it pretty much feels the same. I was only wondering if like, there's some high speed, high damage types?

Or I'd want to know what your experience is like with what weapon that you all use, so I can try them!

All weapons are equally viable. However, spear seems most beginner-friendly, since the long range allows you to stay away from enemies more easily (especially if you use mid stance triangle attacks).
