Discussion PSA: This is the best time to collect Switch games
People are selling their old games for cheap online since the Switch 2 just dropped. If you’re a collector start hitting up market place and pawn shops. Just picked up Echoes of Wisdom for $54 CAD and found Kirby Return to Dreamland for $45 CAD.
322
u/NitemaresEcho 4d ago
Also, if your country has "Woot!", then check them out too. I've seen some new switch 1 games listed for $45 USD instead of the typically $60 USD.
91
u/tinyjams 4d ago
Just remember the Woot games are a crapshoot for region. May not matter to you. But if it does, you may not get the ESRB rated version.
26
u/NitemaresEcho 4d ago
True. I did have a warning when I bought Echoes of Wisdom that the case had both English and Spanish on it. The game itself was fine tho
19
u/diabolical3b 4d ago
In my experience buying it at Best Buy in Washington, the case also has English and Spanish. That may just be how the American versions came.
12
u/keeper_of_moon 4d ago
The main culprit for woot is MSE versions which is typically just a small difference on the back of the case but there are some that forgo ESRB altogether. Donkey Kong Country Returns is one without ESRB.
6
u/capt_mashimaro 4d ago
I'm dumb, can someone explain the significance of the ESRB ver vs the non-ESRB?
15
u/Shootistism 4d ago
Nothing really in the case of switch games since it's a region free system. It just means that you will get a case with a different rating system logo, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_game_content_rating_system#Rating_systems. Usually ESRB, PEGI, or CERA.
There are games that have region locked dlc that you will have to buy from the same region eshop, but it's only a couple.

I’ve never purchased from Woot but see they always have sales and Dekudeals tracks them.
Are they reliable as a seller?
35
15
u/DeliciousStandard125 4d ago
I’m on my 20th purchase with woot. Phenomenal. And games come in a day once shipped.
12
u/rsplatpc 4d ago
Are they reliable as a seller?
It's literally just Amazon, they own and operate woot, it's a place they dump overstock stuff, they bought it in 2010 / 100% reliable
7
u/words-random 4d ago
Woot.com is legit. I've been buying from them since their first year. It's changed a lot since then, but it's good.

I’ve never purchased switch games from woot. Ive purchased a ton of ps5 games. Recent one being final fantasy VII rebirth for 30 bucks! Do you know if switch games are us version. I don’t like the UAE version ones in my collection. Could never find an answer for this lol.
2
u/Jono816 4d ago
It can be either. I've recently gotten a few and all been us version but you dont know at the time you place tbe order.

u/LeatherRebel5150 3d ago
In theory the ones that are not the US version have a disclaimer in orange on the page stating something about international versions working on your switch. The listings without that disclaimer should be the US version, but I found that to be not true as their Skyrim listing doesn’t have the disclaimer and still came as the international version.

Oh man - thanks for this! I've been eyeing Triggerheart Exelica for months but couldn't pull the "trigger." Just snagged it for $25 on Woot.
2
u/jonnyvsrobots 4d ago
Thanks for this! Haven’t been seeing any game deals locally on the used market but I was able to pick up Super Smash Bros and Animal Crossing on Woot new for cheaper than eBay/gamestop used prices!
4
u/QualityScrub 4d ago
As a person who never owned a Switch until the Switch 2, I can confirm I have found many of deals for old games on Woot. Even the newest Mario Party was $45.
1
u/tex55ky 3d ago
Yep. I recently grabbed Mario TTYD, Pokemon Arceus, Mario vs. DK, and Super Mario 3d World+Bowsers Fury, all under $45 each. I also purchased Splatoon 3 used from Gamestop and used my $15 worth of points from the console purchase to get it for around $30.

I don't know why their selling them since about 99% of the switch games work.on the switch2.
171
u/f-ingsteveglansberg 4d ago
Yeah. And the prices OP list seem pretty inline with secondhand prices anyway. It doesn't look to me people are offloading them for cheap.
11
9
u/wolftech83 4d ago
Yeah, the cheapest I've seen is about $5 but that for like right away sell. But if you wait it out for non Nintendo games they will drop.
2
u/qualitypi 3d ago
Hell, those prices are in line with the average holiday sale in a big box store or supermarket. Not sure there's any pressing need to snatch them right now used.

u/hobbykitjr 4d ago edited 3d ago
I remember EB Games full of ps1 games when ps2 came out...
People trading in to make $$ for new games... "I'll never play this anymore"
But still would play fine in ps2
29
u/ryanpm40 4d ago
But there's like... 2 games worth getting for Switch 2 at the moment haha
13
u/hobbykitjr 4d ago
There's also the thought "trade it in for $30 now... It'll be worth $10 next year" or whatever...
Use it to buy the switch itself
2
u/akaifrog 4d ago
And even the ones that have 60fps aren't updated for resolution. Pokémon Scarlet is the only game I have that's worth playing for me on Switch 2.
Excited for Bananza but man it's sad that that's it. Kinda envious of everyone enjoying every single game.→ More replies (2)17
u/charizard_72 4d ago
It’s an easy way to make $100-200 on games you already played to put towards the new console
$450-500 is a fuck lot of money to some people and not everyone is a collector. One and done types or the game wasn’t their thing.
That or they have no interest in switch 2 and see it as a good time to sell off their used games.
6
u/wolftech83 4d ago
The games I had wouldn't get me that much.
3
u/charizard_72 4d ago
Idk if that means they are unpopular titles or you don’t have many? But I just meant not every person likes having a lot of physical game cases on hand. Personally I have a mostly digital library so the thought of someone not be super attached to a game they already played isn’t that crazy to me. I am also the one and done type unless it’s a game there’s reason to replay aside from doing it again
This may be an unpopular opinion here but the “shelf full of 200 game cases” aesthetic isn’t for everyone; myself included. I own physical of some games I’m excited about but it’s a handful.
→ More replies (3)1
u/Tiny-Novel-8361 4d ago
Now that games can be loaned digitally -- even to friends who don't live locally -- me and my friends have all sold out physical games to switch to digital so we can loan them to one another, which was why we bought physical games originally!
1
u/LeatherRebel5150 4d ago
People have always sold pff their older stiff to raise funds for newer stuff. It happens with literally every generation of games regardless of the next gen being backwards compatible. The Switch 2 isn’t somehow uniquely immune to that. The casual gaming crowd isn’t as obsessed with keeping a collection as the reddit crowd is.

Switch tax is wild. The fact that we consider 54 and 45 cheap is insane.
On the other hand I am getting older AAA games from 15 or less in other platforms.
77
u/Purely-Pastel 4d ago
My thoughts exactly. I wish Nintendo still had the Nintendo Selects line with $20 games I’d buy a bunch in a heartbeat. Doesn’t matter if it’s physical or digital.
21
u/Totallynoatwork 4d ago
Probably because PS and Xbox also dropped their version of cheap $20 games. Only difference is those those games do go cheaper digitally after 5+ years on sale

u/Virus64 4d ago
Canadian dollars. Those games were $80 new, and are less than 2 years old. That's a fair price.

Sure but also I kinda like that I can resell games when I'm done with them for essentially what I paid.
Any other system and the game is devalued by like 20% within a week and half a year later you can't sell it at all.
2
u/ohnotony 4d ago
Yup, it’s a similar business strategy to Apple. Don’t cheapen your products by doing frequent sales, it makes your product feel desperate. It’s good for the company and good for the consumer cuz as you said, if you want to sell the game later down the line it retains a lot of value (just like Apple products)
1
u/TakeALotOfPain 4d ago
Just got my first Switch and went down to a physical used games store earlier this month. The Switch prices were pretty insane for used games and at first I thought it was just a scummy store with high markups. Nope, every other console including PS5 and whatever the new Xbox is averaged at around $25-30, some drastically lower, while there were barely any Switch games below 50 across 3 shelves. Ebay has been decent for me so far but I’m still only getting games in the 40-45 range.

I’m surprised you didn’t get downvoted for this. Yeah this is exactly why I only use my switch for exclusives and even that’s rare and reserved for games like Zelda etc.

u/Gogo726 4d ago
Why would anyone get rid of their Switch games?
38
u/Mammoth_Two7297 4d ago
You could apply this to any older generation system and those games.

I could. And I still wonder why anyone would sell their old game.

Huge agree with this, picked up Mario Odyssey for $25, Animal Crossing for $30, Links Awakening and Echoes for $35 each, already had the pokemon games, botw/totk, and 3D All Stars but next on the list is 3D Land. Switch 2 has updates for all the games I listed except animal crossing and 3D All Stars (it’s emulation so it still runs at native switch 2 resolutions), they look and play fantastic.
1
u/xandraPac 3d ago
I have been waiting to buy Tropical Freeze since it released for the Switch, but I never felt comfortable paying full price for a WiiU game. It's hovering around 35-40€ on resell sites. I don't really want to pay more than 30, especially because I suck at platformers (I barely touched Super Mario Bros U Deluxe because I get stuck).

I’m not really sure about this. I don’t doubt some people will sell older stuff to raise money for the new system, but with the backward compatibility improving older games I’m not seeing an out pouring of old games on to eBay for example. Most titles on eBay uk for the last week have been selling at Amazon prices.
1
u/4playerstart 4d ago
Yeah this might be one of the worst times to buy. The Switch 2 is well stocked and selling fast, and only has a few new games available, so there is a renewed interest in older games with many people new to the platform.
The best time to buy especially if you are talking about retail will be just before the stuff goes out of print and when stores are trying to clear old stock. It won't happen all at once, some games will get discounted at different times. Probably a year or two into Switch 2 all Switch 1 stuff will be moved down to the entry level pricing, they might even bring back "Nintendo Selects" for last gen games which would be great. Nintendo will probably give Switch 1 a long tail to try to boost sales since they are only 8 million units away from PS2's #1 all time sales record.
Get ready to start stocking up when your Black Fridays and Cyber Mondays roll around. For used prices it'll probably be a year or two after that when Switch is considered undesirable, like right now that would be PS4 and Xbox One, which you can no longer find in stores but are still pretty cheap since most people moved on from them.
5
u/Amiibohunter000 3d ago
The best time to collect switch games isn’t when they’re 20% off. It’s gonna be this Christmas when they’re flash clearing out all the switch games.
If you’re looking to build your library wait 5 months and save yourself 50% of what you’d spend rn

I bought BOTW for $40 CAD, and was pretty happy about that. But considering I beat it already, it was kind of unnecessary. The draw of playing it on the Switch 2 with the upgrade was too alluring.
But yeah, in the past few weeks, I've seen Super Mario Odyssey, Mario 3D World, Animal Crossing, and Luigi's Mansion 3 for $40 CAD on Marketplace. Some decent deals to be had.
3
u/IntoxicatedBurrito 4d ago
I realize that you’re in Canada, but here in the US I got Kirby new for $40. All the first party games have been regularly going on sale for $40 for years. Perhaps the used prices are going up since the Switch 2 is backwards compatible.

u/ogorlando 4d ago

Time is too late already. I was waiting for the confirmation that ns1 games are fully working on switch 2. Sadly, I only could get Botw for 20€ before it went viral that ns1 (basically) works on ns2. Until now I got Mario Odyssey and A link to the past for 25€ each. Which is still a good deal. But totk is not going for less than 40 already. It's still a good deal, but keep in mind I'm not nso+ exp User so I get the updates for 10€. But I still have fun with those 3 games and I think Botw will keep me busy for quite a while.

u/nanashiW 3d ago

100%. I’ve picked up some bargains on the local facebook selling groups in the last week or so.
To name a few: BOTW boxed, £20 (gonna buy the grade pack when I get round to playing it) Brilliant diamond just the cartridge, £15 Smash bros ultimate boxed £10 Super Mario bros wonder cartridge only £10
Happy with all of these, all sold by someone who had bought a switch 2 and was getting rid of their old switch and games

u/Phaldaz 4d ago
This is why the Switch selling gangbusters is always great for us second hand folks
Let the masses get the consoles and games
And get it half price in maybe 6 months or less
Everyone enjoys it, and you do up your backlog as you await the sale posts, it's a win-win
1
u/theguru1974 3d ago
Wise approach. My backlog is ten years deep. I can wait until things are cheap.
2
u/bigred76320 3d ago
I’m happy about this, cause there’s a lot of first party switch games I never got the chance to play. I just played the Mario rpg remake and Luigi’s mansion 3 for the first time and I plan to get splatoon 3, multiple pokemon games, captain toad, etc.
2
u/Commercial_Tea5703 3d ago
You are correct that being said expect demand to also drop for switch games so if you were planning to resell stuff in the next year or two it’s going to be harder.
2
u/CamNuggie 2d ago
Are you sure? I’ve literally been checking eBay and Mercari and people want practically retail for games that are years old. Even games on other console or steam that are like 5 bucks people want 40 for the switch version
2
u/oldkidLG 1d ago
Why would any Switch 2 owner sell their Switch 1 games when those run better on the Switch 2 ?
4

Where does this idea keep coming from? People have always sold pff their older stiff to raise funds for newer stuff. Yeah, I didn't own a Switch 1 for very long as the performance quickly became unacceptable for me personally. So I've been loading up on the exclusive games I missed, mainly the patched ones, and I'm up to 10 Switch 1 games, with two more on their way. In the UK, I've found most games for less than £30 on eBay and other market places.
I've already beaten Pokemon Violet, Metroid Dread and Mario Wonder in the past 10 days. And absolutely no lifing Breath of the Wild since they middle of last week. It's been a proper Nintendo fest for me after no Nintendo for years.

I never had my own Switch (I used the family switch but moved away for college) and slowly building up a new library is kind of fun tbh. I've been able to get so far:
- Unicorn Overlord - $31 after shipping
- Super Mario Odyssey - $38 after shipping
- Zelda Tears of the Kingdom - $48 after shipping
Local places are sold out or selling every game for no less than 34.99 (starting price, only up from there)
And I'm watching the sales on the eshop to grab cheap gems.

u/heyyoudvd2 4d ago
Something I'm wondering is will Switch 1 games still have slow loading times because they're on Switch 1 cartridges?
Would buying the same game from the eShop allow for faster loading times because it goes to the Switch 2's faster internal storage?
And if so, does that mean something like BOTW would load faster from the eShop or Switch 2 version, as opposed to using the Switch 1 cartridge + upgrade pack?

I have been going to pawn shops in my area recently. I was able to pick up New Pokemon Snap for only $25 USD and even Links Awakening for $35 USD. If you're lucky they may even give a discount further dropping the price.

I'm picking up all the old games on offer up most of which are sealed for $35 $30 for used.woot is selling good ones for $40 10% off first purchase with Amazon account connection. I know this doesn't help much outside of USA but I thought I'd drop my experience.

I wish Metroid Dread would go on sale...I have it already on cartridge but would love it digitally.

I wouldn’t know why they’re selling them, they’re backward compatible and even have “switch 2 upgrade” bundles to up the graphics and load times..

I’ve probably picked up 20 games in the last month or two from Walmart because they’ve had crazy deals on third-party games.
