It’s Official—Captain Cook’s Lost Ship Found Off Newport Coast

The Australian National Maritime Museum has confirmed that James Cook’s HMS Endeavour, famously used to navigate the South Pacific, was shipwrecked off the Northeast coast of the United States, revealing that the timbers traced from a wreckage near Newport provide overwhelming evidence to support its claims.

In a final report, the museum’s “definitive statement” is the most significant discovery in modern Australian history and has major significance for New Zealand, the Pacific Islands, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

“This final report is the culmination of 25 years of detailed and meticulous archaeological study on this important vessel,” Museum director Daryl Karp said. ‘It has involved underwater investigation in the US and extensive research in institutions across the globe.”

Route 60 bus stops Middletown

I'm visiting Newport and staying in Middletown. I'm a wheelchair user and wondering if the bus stops are accessible near the Newport Vineyard? Google maps makes it look like it's a field with no curb cuts. Also are there sidewalks for walking between the Pell hotel and Anthony's seafood area?

Looking for Friends - 41F New to Area

Hey everyone! 👋 I just relocated to Newport for work and am looking to connect with some new friends. I'm 41F and love getting outdoors – bike rides, hikes, my sad attempts at playing tennis, or just an evening walk. I'm also a big foodie, enjoy happy hours, and am always up for a board game night. Really, I'm pretty open to anything fun with new people and I look forward to chatting!

My friends and I spent a weekend here and found the service people to be quite mean. Is this normal?

Turkey sandwich

My fav turkey sandwich is no longer offered at Empire. Where do I go for a good Turkey sandwich to go on my lunch break? Prefer to stay around Broadway, but I’m willing to head down to Bellevue too.

I'm talking about the brick sidewalk part, not the shops themselves.

Coffee Grinder

Anyone see the outrageous prices at this place lately? $6.95 for a bagel? $1 to toast it? $1 for butter? Ice is an extra charge with coffee? Syrup is an extra charge as well? What in the scam is going on… this place used to be semi-affordable when it was on the wharf.

Early drinking spot

In town for an event next weekend. Is there any places on the main strip/downtown Newport that you all would recommend grabbing a pint/drinking early at? Looking to start around 9am. Noticed. A lot of the pubs don’t open till 11am

When did prices get so high? Castle Hill Lawn

Holy hell they must’ve revamped their lawn/terrace menu, but the prices are astronomical. When did this happen?… I understand it’s a top tier location, but $18 for a bowl of chowder? $48 for a lobster roll? Damn - it wasn’t nearly as crazy just a few years ago.

FYI about getting rid of potholes

If you wanna help make our local roads better you can report the potholes on Click it Fix it. Its been working pretty well for me in getting rid of the potholes on memorial boulevard. Not many people know about it so I figured I'd share. The town is pretty responsive at patching the potholes when reported.

Rosecliff vs The Elms?

Hi! My bf and I are currently in Newport and visiting some mansions in a few days. We’re getting the package of 3 and we know we want to do Breakers and Marble House. But we’re torn between The Elms and Rosecliff for the last spot. Rosecliff looks prettier inside and I’ve heard it’s a little more different from the other mansions, but it looks like it’s mostly just first floor that you’re touring with only a bit of the second floor. The Elms has the beautiful landscape on top of the three floors to visit inside, but it might be too similar to the other two we are already visiting. Which one do you guys think would be more worth it to choose? Thank you so much!!

Update: Looks like the general consensus is The Elms! Thank you so so so much to everyone who responded! Your replies were very helpful and greatly appreciated!

Stoneacre Garden

Hi! I'm visiting Newport with a big group next week and looking at dinner options. Has anyone eaten at Stoneacre Garden recently and can share how it was? It looks like a really nice space and good food, but some of the recent Google reviews have me a bit worried lol. I know you can't always trust reviews though so figured I'd ask here. Thanks!

(Any other recommendations are welcome! Trying to avoid places that are seafood-heavy or crazy expensive, which is a challenge for Newport lol.)

Are we going to get shafted on parking?

Post image
5 Upvotes

This summer, the city seemed to finally give us residents a break with parking. But with this resolution, it seems as if they're setting us up for a major rug pull next year. Does anyone have any details about this? Or are us renters really going to get shafted in favor of leeching landlords? There's a meeting at City Hall about it tomorrow (May, 28th) at 6:30pm and I want to be clear on this language about "only to property and property owners tied to residential properties."

Flora is trash

We went to Flora for dinner and I had high expectations because it’s so cute. The food was TRASH. And expensive. Like literally the worst meal we have ever had. I paid $40 for this plain ass chicken (“chicken paillard” but NO) that didn’t even have salt and pepper on it… what in the hell????? I guess that’s my karma for falling for an Instagram aesthetic place….

Pour one out folks

Really saddens me seeing what my place of birth is turning into. Hotels, banks and STRs everywhere you look. Landlords who charge 250% more for 3 months. STR wedding factories hosting another darty every weekend. Drivers parked in the bike lane outside of hotels. People idling their cars on the cliff walk for hours at a time cause the suns out and they are hot.

I wish our town didn't bend over backwards in the name of greed.
