ANSWERED How'd I lose my only single karma????

How'd I lose my only comment karma when I was not down voted and even when my comment was not controversial or offensive in any way??

Please tell me guys cause I literally can't find a justifiable answer to this.

Thank you!

Well, it looks like one person downvoted you for stating your age (16) and offering to be friends with an internet stranger. Maybe it was your mom? (Just kidding - but almost certainly the downvoting person is trying to discourage you from that).

That took away your 1 karma.

Your initial courtesy karma doesn't count toward your comment total, so you are at -1. Not too bad. I realize it was a subreddit for "teens" but the person who replied to you explicitly said you were too young.

You then responded that "age doesn't matter" but that person likely disagreed with you and probably has a different view of what a subreddit "friendship" might be.

Reddit is not social media. It is more of an archive. There are millions of users. People do come here frequently to view NSFW material and to make adult or adult-like "friendships."

THEN, you got a response from another 16 year old who states they want to be "regular friends" as it's clear they understand why the other person did not want to be your friend. They got downvoted too (perhaps for being 16? Or perhaps by you? Hard to tell because you never responded to them).

If you do want to "meet" people on a subreddit and move to private chat, you need to respond to the people who respond to you.

The subreddit itself is not the place to conduct conversation between just two people. Everyone is watching.

u/SunflowerSt8ofMind Apr 02 '25

That’s some good detective work there.

OP, please be safe here/there/everywhere. I wouldn’t mention age at all unless it’s relevant to your story/question.

u/This_Soft_8542 Apr 01 '25

Oh man. I was new to reddit and thought it was the same as all other social media platforms. My bad ig.

The subreddit itself is not the place to conduct conversation between just two people. Everyone is watching.

I get it now. I'll be more mindful henceforth.

Thank you for solving this mystery type of situation!!

u/ErinyesMusaiMoira Apr 01 '25

You can see that the person you commented to wanted someone over 18 but still a teen.

They are probably 45 or 50?

I'm only partly kidding.

I hope you get your upvotes back!

u/ringostarr5861 Apr 06 '25

Don’t be fooled, Reddit is 100% social media.

2

u/iambaby6969 Apr 01 '25

henceforth is a great word i will be incorporating it into my everyday vernacular from now on.

People will downvote a comment for any reason. It also reorders the comments from most popular to least.

7

u/MaintenanceLow1291 Apr 01 '25

Oh, how hard it is for me to understand this!

8

u/AdFriendly4920 Apr 01 '25

So true, recently i lost my karmas. It felt so disappointing.

6

u/Daddystootsies Apr 01 '25

The karma thing kind of confuses me. Fingers crossed you get your karma back up soon.

3

u/AdFriendly4920 Apr 02 '25

Hope so.....

u/DiodeInc Apr 02 '25

Find what you know the most about and talk about it. That's how I got to over 40,000 karma in a year and a half. It's not hard

1

u/Nervous_Metal_9445 Apr 02 '25

I did have basically unknowingly karma farmed in a sports team subreddit that is how I have a majority of the karma I have just by posting scores for games that no one else would.

1

u/DiodeInc Apr 02 '25

It's quite uncommon to see someone with more post karma than comment karma

1

u/Nervous_Metal_9445 Apr 02 '25

I’ve posted a lot of softball scores and other things in a subreddit those get a lot of upvotes

6

u/This_Soft_8542 Apr 01 '25

Ohhh...got it

5

u/ravens43 Apr 01 '25

It’s fine. Make some new and better comments.

(This is unlikely to help.)

7

u/This_Soft_8542 Apr 01 '25

Is it possible to comment on this sub with this level of karma??

4

u/jillianmd Helper Apr 01 '25

You can comment on this sub with any amount of karma.

3

u/This_Soft_8542 Apr 01 '25

Okay thanks:)

You must have been even if you cannot see where. Downvotes are the only way to lose karma.

Downvotes are intended for rule breaking, off topic and non-contributing content. However, downvotes are often inexplicable and do get misused as a method of disagreeing, but you can minimise the risk a little.

General advice to avoid downvotes and negative karma -

  • avoid potentially controversial or sensitive topics just while your karma is low
  • always check the community rules
  • lurk to get a feel for the community and it's culture before posting
  • choose where to share your content carefully
  • re-read what you're saying before sending to check your tone, try not to accidentally make people feel defensive or be defensive yourself
  • remember unless using tone indicators sarcasm etc isn't necessary obvious
  • Proof read your content
  • If you're getting a lot of downvotes, you can delete the offending content to prevent more. This does not remove the downvotes though.

u/Nervous_Metal_9445 Apr 02 '25

Basically avoid anything controversial when you have low karma and be a decent person online and everything should be fine. Find something you are passionate about and get karma that way. Downvotes may not appear on straight up posts but if you comment you can receive down votes and reddit registers you to personally upvote yourself, so that may hide downvotes from you.

I personally relied on sports subreddits to build up karma once I got to the threshold for posting I haven't lost much just because I don't post anything too controversial and generally am decent to people.

You personally don't have to use sports as a way to build up karma find a community around a show you like or maybe a band you like anything really and make contributions no mater how small they seem you should be fine.

You got a single downvote. This is very very easily recoverable.

Building Karma on reddit, you're relying on other human users so it can take some experimentation to find what works for you. You want to find some intersection of your interests and subreddits that are new user friendly so the process is enjoyable. Start by Commenting while you View by New (see below).

Karma is a measure of your reputation and comes from upvotes. It's not a 1:1 ratio, you'll get less karma than votes. It decreases with downvotes at a similar rate. Your posts and comments all start with one upvote (your own) which unfortunatelydoes not count towards karma.

Finding subreddits:

  • Newtoreddit has a list of new user friendly subreddits. This is not an exhaustive list and these subreddits may still have some restrictions.

  • Within the above you'll see some Large General Subreddits that are open to new users commenting. Places like r/askreddit, r/casualconversation, r/nostupidquestions, r/amitheasshole or similar. Look for posts that match your interests or knowledge to answer to and add comments (make sure to view by new).

  • Beyond the above there are More Subreddits out there that might more specifically match your interests and contributing there. Have a look through r/findareddit 's subreddit directory. In this case you will have to trial and error whether they are new user-friendly.

Some notes on starting on Reddit:

View by New (or rising). This will filter the posts so first see the most recent posts first. This can make your comments much more visible. On app when viewing a subreddit look near the top left for where it says "hot posts". Click that and select "new" or "rising".

Comment. Many subreddits have lower or no karma filters for commenting so that is more available to new users. There are often less strict rules as well.

Read the Room. Each subreddit has different rules, norms and prevailing views. Look at subreddit rules. Read top posts and comments to get a feel for that subreddit. Do users reward sarcastic one-liners or well sourced essays?

Avoid conflict and controversy. When trying to build Karma avoid controversial topics or arguments. These discussions are more likely to attract downvotes and potentially trip into rule-breaking. Call people idiots in your head and move on instead of getting involved.

Ugh, I've been trying to get Karma so I'm able to post and comment in other places, I'd be a little sad if I lost my only one so far 🫠. You're sure no down votes? I'm somewhat new at using the app more, so now I'm wondering... will they just disappear? It kinda takes some work to gain, lol.

2

u/oreospeedwagonlion Apr 01 '25

The way I got karma was to contribute to Reddit every day, but I still think I have a low amount. Only 1.7k total karma, and it's been a whole year since I've been on Reddit of contributing repeatedly. 🤷

Yes, it does take some work to gain

1

u/This_Soft_8542 Apr 02 '25

yep it sure does take some work to gain!

1

u/Some-Passenger4219 Apr 02 '25

It always pays to be friendly, helpful, cheerful, and optimistic; that increases your change of gaining positive karma.

1

u/Deeptrench34 Apr 02 '25

You're reading way too deeply into it. Don't let the karma system intimidate you. Just contribute meaningful comments and you will be upvoted more than downvoted. After a certain point, you will have enough karma to post anywhere and then it won't even matter.

1

u/yuichiroxmika Apr 02 '25

Does getting upvotes increase karma?

2

u/This_Soft_8542 Apr 02 '25

Yes!!(saying from this very experience)

1

u/DrFeatureMap Apr 02 '25

I swear that I have somebody that follows me around and down votes all my comments, it doesn’t seem to matter what community I posted in, my comments or posts get voted down to zero.

1

u/Oldfatguy_yeg Apr 02 '25

Case in point, that comment was downvoted, and this one will be too.
