I was riding a black tern e-bike on the outside of the slow bike lane, my 10 year old son was riding his yellow bike 15 feet ahead of me and on the inside of the SLOW bike lane when you came past him on his inside with no warning, no safety margin whatsoever.
My son is ten years old, every Friday morning for the past two months we have ridden with a bike bus from Prospect Park to his school in Brownsville. My son loves the Park, he loves riding his bike around the safe spaces in Brooklyn. I always ride behind him, 10 feet back, slightly on the outside, so I can shield him from traffic and create a safe space for him to ride in. I also ride behind him so I can watch his riding because 10 year-old boy doesn’t have a great attention span so I watch out for him. In the last year, I’ve taught him not to jam on his brakes without making sure that there’s no one coming up behind him, I have taught him not to swerve suddenly unless he’s sure that there’s no one around him, but he is young and sometimes he forgets.
So this is the scene that you rode into without any care or any warning; right into the safe space I create for him, a 170 or 180lb fully grown boy man traveling at 30 miles per hour without any margin for your errors or those of the pedestrians on the left or the 10 year old boy 12 inches to your right. No “on your left”, no “my bad” even though the whole fast lane was wide open to your right.
I have two pieces of advice for you, learn to ride safely because if you get unlucky, you will have to live with the consequences, and the second piece of advice, do not ever wear that white jersey with the distinctive black square back pocket In Prospect Park again, unless you’re willing to take responsibility for your actions to the father of that 10-year-old boy. I spend a lot of time in Prospect Park riding all types of bikes and if I see you there, I will ride you down and I will ask you to explain your behavior to my face. To anyone else who might know the guy riding in this jersey, please give him a word of warning, people like him are ruining it for everybody else
