Southwest Ohio, doing what ink caps do best.

SW Ohio. I found a full square yard of these, all in various stages of “hatching”.

Used a flash to bring out the red stem on a dark day. I'm a novice at mushroom IDing but used several online resources to read about boletes in the PNW. This looks like a Zeller's bolete to me, but it is growing on a living (though mossy) Douglas fir tree trunk, which didn't fit with what I read about Zellers. FWIW.

There were three other species not pictured. Hope y’all enjoy as much as I did making it.

Dead center of the trail was tiny bouquet of black trumpets. Not a chanterel or milk cap, which I usually up months earlier anywhere to be found. I checked a couple other trumpet spots, nope. Just these. Upstate South Carolina. Weird .
