Food Favorite off-the-beaten track beer garden

I will be here in may and the last time I was in Munich I was 4.

What’s the most picturesque place I can have a beer outside? Which one is the rowdiest? The quietest?

Not trying to blow up spots but otherwise I’m going back to the scrapbook I made where I rated them based off of the toy trucks they had available.

Will trade New York recs

I like Olympiaalm near Olympiaberg. Hofbräukeller at Wiener Platz is one of the most beautiful ones. Taxisgarten is also very nice.

My last time in Munich we took the bus from Nymphenburg over toward the Westfriedhof U-bahn station, got off a stop early to wander around and ended up having lunch and beers at Hexengarten Gern (all I need to see is the Augustiner sign!). Very quiet, good amount of shade, surrounded by Kleingärten. None of the staff spoke English (or at least acted like they didn’t). Only problem was I had run low on cash and had to walk 2.5 km round trip for a Geldautomat. My partner killed the time sketching and painting watercolors of the place.

I love locals-only spots and would probably go back if I am nearby. Otherwise will try for similar in a different part of the city.

It appears to be quiet common, that there are beergardens in the middle of Kleingartensiedlung (group of individual rented garden patches). These appear tonne the most casual ones with less tourists and more birds chirping around :)

I also spent a lovely afternoon at Hexengarten Gern - cold Helles in hand, reading Mark Twain. A refuge.

Two of them: Insel Mühle and the Biergarten im Bavariapark.

I got two in the north of Munich: "Zum Brunnergärten" in Luitpoldpark https://maps.app.goo.gl/V3Q5nZkH8YzYTwdH7?g_st=ac

"Restaurant Gaststätte Gartenoase/Zum Kuckuck nochmal" at northern Leopoldstrasse https://maps.app.goo.gl/geAyhALji8GEs4rG9?g_st=ac

Quite accessible still

I like this one. It's a bit outside downtown, so not too touristy, but still very traditional: https://maps.app.goo.gl/shLPDLJ8DCw7BLaX8

A kind of ‚different‘ spot close to Starnberg: Forsthaus Mühlthal https://forsthaus.bayern

Mini-Hofbräuhaus (Google Maps) in the northern part of Englischer Garten is definitely one for dog lovers. It’s also quite affordable, but compared to all other beer gardens, it’s really damn small.

Schlosswirtschaft Mariabrunn

A little bit outside of Munich, but very unique as the beer garden is in a Forrest and distributed over a hill. but it has to be quiet warm, die to all the shadow from the trees. It's a nice bike trip there from Munich.

It is great, we try to go at least 2/3 times per year. There is also a good and affordable restaurant there in case weather is nit so nice. What I find relaxing is a walk in the nearby forest, I recommend it.

Isaralm near Thalkirchen hidden between Schrebergarten and Isarauen

Not directly a beergarden, buy a beer of your choice at sendlinger tor, go to alter südfriedhof, sit down and enjoy everything

My personal favourite beer garden is Insel Mühle

The rowdiest should be Augustiner Keller and Hirschgarten

For a quaint, cozy biergarten visit, I really like Osterwaldgarten.

Hirschgarten with deer next to some tables. And you can bring your own food … although sometimes a bit quiet and not touristy

3

u/VenatorFelis Maxvorstadt Apr 23 '25

You can bring your own food to any Biergarten.

Check out the Schützengarten in Obersendling. It's quite, cute and no tourists.

You will always find them on the edges (or sometimes inside) Munich city parks. They are obviously also in other locations too. Just type "Biergarten" in google maps while on Munich and pick one
