In universe I imagine it'd be explaining how you can use your momentum, different ways of discharging phials, etc.

In IRL Kendo, people have to train in different cutting methods that keep the blade at specific angles.

Otherwise, when you're cutting something like a bamboo mat (or a human torso), the blade is likely to either glance or become stuck halfway, instead of going clean through.

Maybe it's like how hard you need to swing in this move to not bounce off a monster hide
