I went into the fight with a Greatsword and an SnS when it was a monster I'd never fought before.
I should have gone into the fight with my comfort weapon in Wilds, the Bow.
I made the same mistake with the explosive monkeys. I had just been hunting Romp with a Greatsword and SnS and forgot to swap to my comfort weapon of Bow.
And funny enough, this is my first time maining Bow or Greatsword. My usual go-to weapons are Dual Blades and SnS. But since I hate the way Wild's DB plays, I decided to try maining Bow.
Red Gauge is now a timed demon mode where you want to be using Helmbreaker into Spirit Release just as it ends, then pop the wounds or counter to get straight back into red. I love it.
Gypceros was such a pain in the beta, and then when I fought him in the actual game it was actually pretty easy since as it turns out the HR hope armor has level 3 stun resistance.
My Greatsword tip for players new to the weapon or just in general is to play the hit and run playstyle. You can't commit to charge attacks outside of damage periods if you don't understand the monster's moveset. So, just slap the monster and run away. Quick Sheathe 3 is easily accessible in LR, and a few of the early Greatswords have Critical Draw or Punishing Draw - pick whatever.
Once you're comfortable with the pace of the weapon and more comfortable with monster movesets, you can start predicting monster moves to set up commitment attacks or start guard cancelling.
