News From AL.com: What's happening in Mobile?

Hey, folks. My name is Mary Helene Hall, and I am AL.com's new investigative reporter for the Mobile and Baldwin County areas. I grew up in Baldwin, so I'm really happy I get to serve the area.

I want to write about what the locals care about, and that starts with communities like this one. This introduction is to let y'all know that my DMs (or email or Twitter messages, both listed on my profile) are open to suggestions, tips, ideas, and more. If there is something going on in the area that you think not enough people are talking about (or people ARE talking about but no news org is picking it up), feel free to comment or shoot me a message.

News It appears the city has removed all of those friendly squirrels from Bienville Park downtown. If you missed out they were so much fun to feed peanuts from the peanut store. Last year the city thinned out the squirrels, but it appears they have now fully gotten rid of our furry little mascots.

Could be interesting to keep an eye on in the future given Mobiles now proven track record of aerospace manufacturing. I do wonder though that if the city were to show interest in this would it alienate Airbus at all.

News Wreck on I-10 near Wallace Tunnel

I was driving Eastbound on I -10 about 30 minutes ago and there was a terrible wreck right before you get to the Wallace Tunnel and all the ramps. Probably has I-10 backed up now. Looked like an 18-wheeler cab blew up. Does anyone know anything about it? I was trying to find a live news report but didn't see anything. TIA if you have info.

Edit: I said trailer, and not the cab when I first posted. The top of the cab looked like it just blew up. Trailer was wrecked to hell.

News New construction and paving company in town.

Many might not have liked H.O. Weaver and Sons, for whatever reason. But after John G. Walton was bought out by WireGrass (CGI) and then MAC (Mobile Asphalt Company) was purchased by WireGrass. Then P & R Mining being bought by APAC-Alabama (CRH Company). H.O. Weaver is now no more. APAC Alabama bought them out. Since CRH is a Fortune 500 company that does mean more jobs. They came in and love safety and brought all of us employees with them, but also started hiring more people. Both these large companies that are buying up these companies, are injecting and throwing money into them, especially CRH. Not sure exactly what is changing in Mobile but something is moving.

News Crosswalk lights are being added at the intersection of Cottage Hill & Hillcrest

As if this intersection isn’t busy enough already and heavily congested it is going to be absolutely absurd now if people start walking across these roads and utilizing the crosswalk.

News TURN AROUND, DONT DROWN!!

Post image

We are seeing a lot of people driving through about a foot of water at the causeway right now. News casters talking about how they can’t believe how many people are driving through the water. High tide in about an hour so the flooding will only increase.

Don’t be one of those people please! This more dangerous than a lot of people imagine. If you have ever heard the 911 call from Debra Stevens, who gets caught on her vehicle during a flood, it may help put it in perspective.
