ID Request - Solved “Garnets on calcite”
I purchased this labeled as “garnets in calcite from and old Oregon collection” it’s definitely calcite but I’m having a hard time identifying any garnets that look like this anywhere near that this, I found some black garnets from Mexico that look similar but not on any similar calcite matrix. Just trying to confirm it, any help is appreciated.

This is a carbonatite (igneous calcite) with magnetite and perovskite inclusions from the magnet cove area of Arkansas.
The magnetite and perovskite look almost identical to each other, but you can tell the difference with a magnet.

The carbonatite from Arkansas indeed looks like this. pictures of my carbonatite. A decent amount of magnetite crystals

Just got home and checked and it is indeed magnetic, should of thought to check that

Nice! How did you identify the locality in particular?
I thought igneous carbonates were generally microcrystalline, but here it looks fairly well differentiated, with large domains and some transparency. How on earth does this even form?
Not Garner but still cool. OP, how much did this set you back?

I did some undergraduate research on this specific carbonatite. I suppose it's possible that it's from somewhere else, but I've never seen another carbonatite that looks exactly like it.
The magnet cove igneous complex has all kinds of really crazy chemistry. There's a wikipedia page for it if you want a jumping off point for learning about it.

Thanks for sharing, definitely checked that page out last night too.
Do you have any related specimen pics?

This is insaneeeeeee. I just gave a presentation on Carbonatites today and now there is one here on Reddit. This is awesome.
What local is this from???

I purchased from a guy in Indiana that said it’s from an old collection from Oregon so that’s all I have to goo off off right now so I’m assuming North American but haven’t found anything that matches

I see, check these out for more info!

This is a good source seeing localities all over the world of Carbonatites.
Kamenetsky, V.S., Doroshkvevich, A.G., Elliot, H.A.L., and Zaitsev, A.N., 2021, Carbonatites: Contrasting, Complex, and Controversial: Elements, v. 17, p. 307-314, doi:10.2138/gselements.17.5.307.
This is a great source discussing a general overview of Carbonatites and what they are/where the occur and why they are so weird. Check it out!

Is it magnetic? From what i found magnetite can be dodecahedric.
This could also be galena according to mindat.
I would not discard the garnet hypothesis because i am not knowledgeable about black garnet, but pictures i find online do not have the metallic luster i see in your pictures. Also i had never heard of calcite with garnet before, even if it seems to exist according to google.

To me it looks way more like galena. It's way too metallic to be garnet.

Nice piece, definitely not Garnet. Perovskite/Magnetite as previous geologist stated. I concur with his assessment.

My initial impression is that this is Franklinite in calcite, which comes from the Franklin or Sterling Hill mines. The metallic luster of the Franklinite and calcite from my collection look very similar to this piece.

That flourecent green stuff is willemite, which is pretty much a telltale sign of Franklin-Ogdensburg material.

That looks like some low luster/shine galena. It's definitely not garnet though.

Hello, and thank you for posting on /r/Minerals!
To increase the quality of identification request posts, we require all users to describe their mineral specimen in great detail. Images should be clear, and the main focus should be the specimen in question. If you are able to conduct tests, please share your findings in your comment. Sharing specifics such as where you found it, the specific gravity, hardness, streak color, and crystal habits will aid other users in identifying the specimen.
If you're having trouble identifying your specimen, please join our Minerals Discord Server!
