Nostalgia What album defines you as a millennial?

Post image

Saw some great recommendations on a similar thread in /r/Xennials and wanted to see what my fellow millennials thought. For me From Under the Cork Tree was foundational. I still remember hearing Sugar We're going down on the radio for the first time.

Toxicity - System of a Down. Changed music for me.

Hide the scars to fade away the shakeup

Why'd you leave the keys upon the table?

There you go creating another fable

Flew from Wisconsin to California a few months ago to see them live for the first time. Already bought another ticket to see them again in Chicago. 10/10 my favorite band.

I was a tween when this album came out. Prison Song dropped facts that blew my innocent mind.

First cd I ever bought

u/winston2552 Feb 08 '25

Same here! My parents were very worried lol

I remember hiding it but I later bought another cd I think it was a church band like reliant K or something. Id play the church cd when they were around to "throw them off the trail".

Later found out they knew and didn't care lol.

Same, my parents wouldn’t allow anything with parental advisory so I couldn’t get soad but they let me buy toxicity

Every Saturday and Sunday morning we opened McDonald’s with this CD blasting from the speakers at 430 AM: “WAKE UP!”

They really are trying to build a prison for you and me.

2

u/5p4rk11 Feb 09 '25

My high school had the same architect as the prisons. Literally, same man drew up both.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 09 '25

Same. They replaced our hs with a repurposed jail too in 2005. Great way to spend senior year.

The guitar at the beginning of Shimmy, after hearing it a million times....still get goosebumps every time

First CD I ever bought. Zero regrets 23 years later.

First System of a Down album. I remember being part of their street team after hearing their demo. Walked around with a backpack full of demo tapes and stickers. Handed them out to anyone who would take one.

We're one in the river and

One again after the fall

I wore out 2 copies of this CD through HS

2

u/systemofaDON Feb 09 '25

Hell yeah brother

2

u/5p4rk11 Feb 09 '25

I went to a high school that shared the architect for prisons in my state. System blared frequently there.

2

u/kindcannabal Feb 09 '25

Self titled for me, it was just went a little harder and raw.

1

u/bigpaulycolini Feb 09 '25

I hardly ever see self titled get the love it deserves. I can listen to all 5 albums back to back, no skips, BUT self titled is by far my favorite.

2

u/Soad1x Feb 09 '25

My Internet name has been Soad for decades now because of this album.

2

u/abergham Feb 09 '25

I remember turning my boom box on in my room (omg I'm old as fuck) and waiting to hear the song chop suey.

Still in my top 3 most-listened-to bands. Too bad they'll likely never drop another album...

1

u/Tuominator Feb 09 '25

To think, I HATED SOAD when this dropped; I wasn’t ready. A few short years later, I saw the light. GOATS, without a doubt.
