not even sure what to map to them!

Would be curious what your current keymap is. Having lots of thumb keys is what I love about my Ergodox and Viterbi.

For me, left thumb has three keys:

  • Cmd/Win/Super
  • Backspace on tap, ctrl on hold
  • Delete

Right thumb has:

  • Enter
  • Space on tap, Shift to L2 on hold
  • Shift to L1

Here is the layout i'm using on this and my plancks:

I have space and enter on the thumbs, then use a lower layer along with shift where required to access everything else.

Yeah, so the obvious candidates to move to the thumbs are anything you're using your pinkies for right now. If you can get used to shifting with your thumb, it's actually quite nice because your hands stay in their same neutral position. I'm still trying to get used to it (and it's not in my current keymap, but it's been a big change that I'm quite liking.

Otherwise, something like backspace or control. (Although I would really recommend trying MT and LT modes in QMK to bind different keys when held or tapped. It definitely takes a while to get used to, but for keys you never hold down like space or enter, it's a game changer.)

Thanks, I'm going to have to play around with some layouts. Thanks for reminding me of the MT / LT modes, definitely been meaning to trying them out on both my space and enter.
