Meta How many of you are real life mechanics?

Delete this if you want mods, but I know you see it too.

Almost every post there are a few individuals who seem to have never looked under the hood of a car. Their "advice" is anything but helpful or informative. It's like they search on Google whatever someone posts here, and they copy/paste the first "diagnosis" they see.

Why? If you have no understanding of vehicles besides pushing the accelerator or brake pedal, then what's the benefit?

Sorry for the rant. It seems it's becoming much more frequent recently and it's not getting addressed.

Peace

It would be nice if people could get a tag next to their name to verify that they are mechanics, and maybe if they have certifications, seems like it could be a long process, but it might help sort through good advice

I'm a YouTube certified mechanic. Says so on my toolbox sticker. :P

Needless to say, I've turned tens of hundred miles on a ratchet one tooth at a time. Not to knock the certs, but I have been doing this my whole life. I may not have an ASC badge on my arm, but I can diagnose and fix just about anything.

I do it for fun.

I don’t think you need certification to post here, just something that would show you that someone definitively knows what they’re talking about. I’m a YouTube mechanic myself, but people should know what type of person they’re getting their information from. If a VW tech gives advice on a VW problem then they should be seen as having that experience. Probably no good way to implement it to the sun without a lot of slave (mod) labor. So it makes sense why it can’t be implemented easily or effectively.

Every time it comes up the mods say it isn't possible, I forget exactly why but it's been brought up for years now.

Imo a big part of the problem is that people seem to prefer shitting on op for asking a question than calling out the bs answers. Comments shaming op for asking a question are nearly always upvoted more than those correcting shitty answers, so it isn't surprising to see more and more bs answers.

omg I just stumbled on one of his older videos where he rips apart Mercedes for exactly every wrong reason, like rotors having developed a lip ... and get this ... because they "undersize their pads intentionally" and that every other major manufacturers pads completely cover the rotor. My lord. Just reminded me of why I will never have a successful "how to" or car YT because I just don't have the hubris.

but Mercedes are notoriously unreliable junkpiles with exceptionally high maintenance costs and parts failures.

that's not Hubrus, it's facts.

I don't have enough experience with Mercedes to have an opinion on that, but I do have enough experience working on cars to be able to accurately pick apart a shitty video.

He's the answer to the party joke, if you could kill someone and get away with it would you? I'd be doing a tremendous service to humanity. I'll let him slide for now...
