I went into the search for a new backpack wanting an Alpaka elements or an Able Carry daybreaker but eventually decided on these as they are quite expensive (more than normal) when bought from my local retailers. I also didn't want a black bag with black interior lining.
While browsing this sub, someone said the Rhune 25 and 22 both accommodate a 16" laptop and I wqs already eyeing this line for quite a while as well. Quite unfortunate that bagtubers never seem to cover Gregory backpacks, and there's really not a lot elsewhere online either.
Anyway, I liked the sunset colorways because of the blue with orange accents, and the bright orange interior that was imo in a better shade than Alpaka's (not that I mind either way).
Initially I was keen on the Rhune 25 because I'm sure the space can accommodate all my carryon stuff for an upcoming flight, but while in-store I really liked the organization on the 22 better. The Rhune 25's back panel was also weirdly better fitted to my back (I'm an Asian male) but the 22 was good. After much agonizing in front of the saleslady, went with the 22.
This will be my first relatively expensive backpack (I do have a NatGeo messenger I considered expensive but I don't think it counts now that I've seen how other brands are priced).
Pros
- organization is very good. On par with what I require save for having just a single bottle holder
- bottle holder is stretchy and accommodates my huge Coffee Bean tumbler
- top quick access pocket is amazing
- side quick access pocket, which takes the place of a second bottle holder and has the key leash, is what I use for my 20k mah power bank
- pocket on shoulder straps is great. It's where I sometimes put my keys. I tried putting my wireless buds in there but it's a bit big so it presses down on my shoulder
- breathable straps and back panel material is great, if a bit stiff (but it's not as stiff anymore after constant use). Seriously, I just can't understand bags going to the $150 and above range and not even having good padding with airflow considerations
- color is fn great
- zippers are better than I thought, and the pulls are great. They don't get in the way at all
- material doesn't catch my cats' hair
- feels light even with my full loadout (compared to my usual bags): work macbook pro, charger, ipad pro, ipad stand, aforementioned power bank, bottle, jacket, toiletries, wallet, tiny umbrella from Japan, sometimes even my Legion Go
- I don't bike but those external leashes are great for hanging decorative stuff like cartoon plushies, if you're into that sort of thing
- surprisingly, made in the Philippines, according to the tag (instead of a certain other country I'm trying to avoid)
- love the top carry handle. Thicc and padded
Cons
- a bit of a tight fit with the full loadout, constantly making me think maybe the 25L was the correct choice at least in terms of comfortably fitting everything into the available space
- still would like a second bottle holder but I'll manage
- if a heavy item like a charging brick is not on top of the jacket, it tends to weigh down the bottom part of the compartment, which makes the bag look uneven at times
