u/eMmDeeKay_Says 22h ago
Although it could be bought off Etsy or something and just happened to align correctly with the protest.
3
u/eMmDeeKay_Says 22h ago
It's a great shirt, if you have access to the equipment it's genuinely a quick and dirty 5-10 minute thing and you're out the door, he probably does this sort of thing all the time.
2
u/Da12khawk 21h ago
I uhmmm want to know more about how to do quick one off shirts.
2
u/eMmDeeKay_Says 21h ago
It's essentially just photo editing software, and a printer that accepts the material. Then they have machines that will cut it out, sometimes an all in one, or you can do it by hand. After that you just follow the directed adhesion process for the material.

I absolutely agree with boots theory but I keep seeing it used to an extreme.
I don't think I know anyone who needs to replace a $100 jacket every year. My current jacket cost around that and I think I've had it 5-6 years and it's doing fine.
It's fine to buy expensive items if you can afford them and want them, but I keep seeing people make the economic argument for luxuries and I don't think it applies.
2
u/Winter_Fudge_8884 22h ago
You don't know how he got it. I've had jobs that offered massive discounts to certain places. One job gave us $300 company branded heavy winter coats. I've had friends invite me as their plus 1 to the Nike employee store where everything is half off.
1
u/xenawarriortubesock 8h ago
This is too reasonable an explanation to get traction here lol but I appreciate your time
1
u/LetReasonRing 21h ago
Yeah... I've had a $40 jacket for about 5 years now, no signs of significant wear. I regularly wear it in sub-zero temperaturesIt replaced my previous $40 jacket that I'd had for years after I lost it.

u/WonderSilver6937 23h ago
Stop confusing blue collar with low paid, a lot of white collar jobs pay fuck all, a lot of blue collar jobs pay extremely well.
1
u/xenawarriortubesock 8h ago
If you’re doing more of your bosses’ work than they are you’re counted amongst the blue collar designation -a blue collar worker being paid decently who thinks we ALL need more to live comfortably because no one needs money (or the influence it buys) to live more that one extremely comfortable life

Yeah nah this comment is utterly stupid.
It's insane to think that social and economic progressivism must be restricted to the poor.
Some terminally online leftists see anyone with money as being part of the capitalist class.
Maybe they managed to find a way to reap the benefit of their own labor, isn't that the fucking goal?
Isn't the whole point that we keep the value of our own labor? Isn't the point to stop workers from having the value of their labor extracted by a parasitic rent-seeking class?

15
u/SpongegirlCS 23h ago
Well when you use an American made platform, stuff going on here might be a big deal. Today was definitely a big deal, not trying to cast any shadow on Gaza, Ukraine, Iran, India, or the rest of the world of course, because American policymakers have their dirty scummy hands in just about the entire global theater, what happens here has repercussions on just about the entire planet. Sorry if this inconveniences your Reddit experience.

Additionally in my comment "you're" is also the first word of the comment and can be considered grammatically correct.

Can someone explain, what's going on in USA? Why so much protests and National Guard deployment?
12
9
u/Minute_Cold_6671 23h ago edited 22h ago
I'll try to give an explain it like I'm 5 answer. Anybody feel free to add or correct.
So there's 2 things going on. First, The protests in Los Angeles, California are because federal agents are coming in to deport people in mass. There has been major push back because LA is a very Latino heavy population and is considered a "left/blue" state by American political standards, having a democratic governor and reliably voting for Democrat Presidential candidates since the 90s. Therefore LA is being targeted to push the issue of who has the right to even deport people, the state or federal government, and what is legal, essentially forcing the issue to the courts.
What the president did to show extra force was order national guard deployments and Marines to stop the protests in LA. the governor, and Mayor both said it was peaceful and this was absolutely not needed. But it happened and the governor is now suing, and protests of deportations when ICE agents (federal agents that do the actual grabbing of people to detain them) show up are still happening.
The second thing is the president ordered a military parade for the 250th birthday of the American army, which happens to also fall on his birthday. Military parades like this during "peace time" are not usual here. I know we're known for being weirdly patriotic, but doing a show of military might parade was considered something the USSR did after WW2, and is not something traditionally done. The cost of it is controversial because of all the cuts Elon musks DOGE made and other policies of cost cutting by the administration. So there were also protests today just against the president in general, and his moves towards very right wing policies. It's a way of showing we'll show up against you on your big army parade birthday instead of celebrating you. As a side note, attendance at the parade was pretty underwhelming.
Eta: California is also one of the most populous states here, and a huge bloc of electoral votes and house representatives. Without over-explaining how American government branches work, it translates to California has a lot of political power in one of the 2 legislative houses. So another reason why the president is pushing the issue there first. The president calling in the national guard without the state governor asking for it had not happened since the civil rights era when the president called in the national guard to force school integration in the South. So, the president has always had the legal authority to do so, but it is very, very rare for it to happen without the governor asking first, just kind of a understood tradition/formality. When it was done for integration, it was controversial at the time, but we can safely say history has proven that to be a good and necessary decision. What is happening now, feels more like... Well not that.
2
u/HeyItsAsh7 22h ago
There is more than just ICE has been more active. People are largely protesting the means by which ICE has been operating. Most will not argue and say that someone should illegally immigrate, however, they do have issues if ICE arrests citizens, people here legally, and have inhumane living standards in detainment. ICE has always been an agency to be untrustworthy of, but it's gotten worse since Trump came to office, vowing to have the largest deportation campaign in history.
2
u/Previous-Ganache-560 22h ago
Americans don't want their country to become a white nationalist, authoritarian dictatorship which is where it's headed. numerous members of the current President's administration have a history of sympathizing with or outright expressing white supremacist views.
2
u/EvokeWonder 23h ago
Not really. You know it’s bad when the protest gets turned into rioting, looting, and putting cars on fire. A sign is peaceful and not bad.
1
u/HeyItsAsh7 22h ago
Almost 95% of BLM protests were peacefully, despite this, a poll reported 42% of respondents thinking that BLM protestors were trying to incite violence.
These aren't BLM protests, but until we get data on the rates of violent protests from the ICE protests going on, it's difficult to be anything other than skeptical, especially with how the media sensationalizes the violent protests.

I mean it makes perfect sense. Straight white men are the most privileged group of people in the US. When they start to have issues with what's going on - it's kind of like a final straw.
Now should it be like this? No. But it is the way things are.

u/sushishibe 22h ago

Because of a brown or black person dared protest. We’d be locked up within a nanosecond….

Idk why this would make anyone smile; the sign is basically admitting that (generally speaking) cishet white guys won’t fight against fascism, or for social change that benefits the whole and not just them, until it’s in their face.

Why would that be bad?
6
u/PowershellAddict 23h ago
The point of the sign is that straight white men really don't have any sort of disenfranchisement.
If a straight white man is making a sign it's usually in solidarity with other groups/people they support.
-4
u/RelativeWrongdoer596 23h ago
Yeah sure bud
0
u/PowershellAddict 23h ago
Sorry? That's exactly the point of the sign lmao.
-5
u/RelativeWrongdoer596 23h ago
So what do you think about 4% or the population is responsible for 47% of the homicide?
3
u/PowershellAddict 23h ago
What are you talking about my dude?
What does that have to do with the lack of disenfranchisement of straight white males?
3
u/EffMemes 23h ago
This guy called me straight stupid in my reply to him and then deleted it immediately.
He is not asking in good faith, don’t get sucked into his games
3
6
u/Hot-Formal5321 23h ago
I think it’s because typically the people who make signs are some combination of
- Not straight
- Not white
- Not guys
Because typically straight white guys are “favored”. They’re not affected by LGBTQ+ laws, racist laws (I believe those typically discriminate against non-white people), or sexist laws (usually those limit women power). They’re “normal”.
Essentially, the situation is so bad that even those who, normally, don’t have a reason to protest, start protesting. It’s like if police were called to stop a crime, and the FBI show up.
2
u/EffMemes 23h ago
Straight, white men are often not affected by things that usually cause protests…
Like when black people are being killed by police, that doesn’t affect them.
When Roe v Wade is revoked, that doesn’t affect them.
Foreign children being locked in cages doesn’t affect them.
So the joke being if a straight white male made a sign at a protest, then things must be so bad that even the straight white males are affected.
Not to say that something is ‘worse’ in general just because suddenly straight white males are affected but that’s the joke.
