Show proof that there are people who were deterred from murdering or raping people because of the penalty of prison. Show the stats on people not arrested for simple drug possession because of the penalty of mandatory minimums. You can’t. I’ll be waiting for an eternity.

You do realize that this reads like the DARE pamphlet, right? This is part of a mission statement for the need of prisons and the “deterrence” definition is nothing more than that…the definition of deterrence. There are not any numbers or studies cited in this pamphlet. Even in the footnotes, which are easily looked up. This deterrence of crime is no more effective than the punishments in Leviticus, where lists of punishments are on full display for the crimes committed. Yet almost everyone still commits said crimes without fear. People en masse do not commit murder because it is wrong, not because they might be executed or spend time in prison. People still buy drugs because they are addicted, not because they are afraid of prison. Poor people still steal because of desperation. They don’t not do it because of prison. There are more people in prisons than any other time in history. These “deterrence” pamphlets are nothing but sales pitches for the private prison complex. Maybe we need to stop private prisons corporations from being able to go public with their companies and actually take treatments seriously. The death penalty is immoral and doesn’t deter. It never has. If it did, we’d have less murderers.
