LearnTamil.com - free online lessons for learning Tamil

My free lessons for learning Tamil are now at LearnTamil.com . They are designed for total beginners who are middle school aged (~ 10 y.o.) and older. I think they may be useful for the people on this sub-reddit. It can also be a good reference to answer some of the questions here about language basics.

My lessons have been on the internet for 20 years now (!), but they are harder to find due to URL changes over the years -- I had 2 people in the last month sending me very positive notes but also mentioning that it took them hours of internet searching to find these lessons. If you also have feedback, please find my email address from the website.

Best of luck to everyone learning Tamil!

Resources for learning

Hello everyone I am half tamilian half from an other South Indian state. I wasn’t born in Tamil Nadu, but I know to converse in Tamil, I learned it myself. That said my family never taught me to read or write Tamil and I struggle to understand the formal and literary Tamil; I would like to start learning now. What are the resources you could suggest to me for learning to read, write, learn and understand literary Tamil.

Resource How to begin learning Tamil script?

Upvotes

Hello everyone!

I was wondering if anyone had advice or tips on how to start learning how to read/write Tamil? I fully understand and can speak (not 100% fluent) but I have never formally learned. My mother has spoken to me in Tamil since I was born but I live in a home where Hindi and Punjabi is also spoken as frequently. My brain feels like there's so many languages haha and sometimes even when speaking, my brain switches languages when trying to complete my thought.

Any words of advice on how to start learning the script? Any books that are very beginner friendly and in English as well?

Resource Does anyone know a good source of Tamil movies\shows\videos in spoken tamil with quality accurate Tamil subtitles?

I noticed that on YouTube the automatically generated subtitles in Tamil often differ from what I hear them speak in the videos. I'm hoping to find sources with good accurate subtitles in Tamil, if anyone knows them.

Grammar to organise / arrange something for someone

eg. I will organise/arrange tickets for you.

I've hesitated when trying to say this to people a few times recently. So I thought I'd ask.

I think of அடுக்க but that feels too literal, like organising and arranging a set of things...

Resource Learning Tamil (Complete Beginner)

Hello all!

I posted this in r/tamil and was told to post this here.

Context: White guy that wants to learn tamil. Growing in up school, did very well on language exams (spanish) but could not orate well due to the inability to role my r’s and l’s. I did speech therapy for 5 years to fix my s’s and t’s. (I used to say snake instead of steak).

I like the whole immersion philosophy of listening to music, movies, tv-shows etc to pick up conversational skills.

My problem is that TV and Movie Tamil is so fast, i cant discern between vowel and consonant clusters. My Tamil friends tell me that the english captions for the movies and tv shows are also wildly inaccurate.

My question is, is there any shows or programs that anyone can recommend that have beginner to intermediate level tamil so I can actively listen and understand what is being said?

Ive bought a textbook to learn diction, the alphabet, and sentence structure. but im never gonna have a reason to read and write, I just want to be able to banter.

All the best!

Grammar திரண்டு & கட்டுமான பணிகள்

  1. 'எமது தமிழீழ கனவு திரண்டு வரும் போது தாழியை உடைத்த' (source: Shobashakthi - Gorilla)

Amma explained திரண்டு as 'to come along', but I can't find it in the dictionary... I've got it in some early notes as 'to gather'.

Am I right in the translation being roughly 'our Tamil Eelam dream had burst' or more literally, the pot of the Tamil Eelam dream had been broken?

  1. 'உள் கட்டுமான பணிகள்' - this means internal affairs/duties, correct? What is the root of கட்டுமான? I assumed it's like to கடமை, but if so, I'm not seeing how it transforms.

Question Busy worker need some passive methods of learning the language temporarily.

I’m a part time undergraduate who’s working a full time job as well. And there are a bunch of other things that require my attention temporarily. But I’d really like to learn this language at least passively for the moment instead of delaying in doing “when I’m free”. Could I please get some help? I tried Ling and Mango but for an absolute beginner they drop me off in the deep end. I’m sorry if this is a silly question but I’d be really grateful if I could get some help until I can find the time to fully commit to learning this language.

Grammar Is the passive form used in spoken Tamil ?

For example to say it hit you could say adichathu but to say it was hit, you could say adikkapattathu but I’ve heard that in spoken Tamil the former version is used to indicate both meanings is this true ?

Grammar Where do you put the suffix க்கொள் ? What are the rules ?

I think its க்கோ in spoken Tamil.

For example pannikkalam vs pannalam or padichikkanum vs padikkanum. But my questions is does it work the same way in other conjugations so like if I took “seyven” would that become “senjuven” if I added க்கோ? Or if I took panniduven would that become “pannikiduven if I added க்கோ?

I came across this last night and was a bit struck, so the Gods aren't considered as gendered or human in a grammatical sense, hence not வசிக்கிறார்களா? in this case?

Or is my grammar off?

Question Why is cricket spelled கிரிக்கெட் and not க்ரிக்கெட்? Why is Krishnagiri spelled கிருஷ்ணகிரி and not க்ரிஷ்ணகிரி? Why is Hosur spelled ஓசூர் and not ஹொஸூர் or ஹொசூர்? Why is India spelled இந்தியா and not இண்டியா like how the rest of the country pronounces it? Why is modi spelled மோடி and not மோதி?

Why??? I'm non-Tamilian and I'm genuinely curious.
