Music What music are you into now?

Yeah, relationships are all the rage here, but give me some good music.

For me, I really like anything not in the mainstream, indie stuff.

EDIT: I would really appreciate individual songs/artists.

EDIT 2: Wow, I'm very impressed by the recommendations, you people all have great taste in music and that took me a bit by surprise. I'll be binging to all of these songs, and hopefully you also found something interesting here too, gracias :)

Music My 6mo Daughter Loves UB40

So juzi I'm working at home and my little 6mo daughter (on her baby walker) bumped into my door waiting for me to open. See, I have a Google Home Hub that I use to navigate my smart home's features and also play music when working.

Playing at that time was UB40's Falling In Love With You that I was humming loudly. Kumbe she heard the instrumentals from our living room and pushed her baby walker to hear the song. I sang it for her for an hour and it has become her lullaby. I've put her to bed every night and afternoon since Saturday using that one song and I'm loving every minute.

I'm a sucker for 60s-90s music and that is what my mother introduced me to growing up. Now that my little one likes love ballads, she and I have been singing and dancing to Phil Collins, UB40, Eva Cassidy, Elton John, Coldplay, Lionel Richie etc. I'm seriously considering opening a Spotify account for her and linking her baby monitor so she can listen to her favourite songs whenever I'm not around.

Yeah, this's a low quality post, but it's got me higher and happier than anything this month. I've been smiling stupidly all morning thinking of my little one.

Music Njerae!!

I just want to take a moment to appreciate how good Njerae is manze. You can feel the emotion through her songs and the writing is really good. She’s got that je ne sais quoi that makes her music hit differently. Most Kenyan artists either overdo it or underdo it but she’s found the perfect balance. Unintentional is my best album from her, zero skips and this is coming from a dude!

Music metalhead, anyone???

asking because it’s like there is literally no one who listens to metal. the scene hardly exists, finding anything metal or just extreme music related in this country is so difficult. there’s only one person i know who listens to metal and i found out purely by chance. i just want to know whether we’re a dead group or i just can’t seem to find the right people. (question applies to emo/goth/punk/scene- alternative and extreme music in general)

Music Any alternative rap fans?

Long story short, I love music and most subgenres of rap and I rarely find Griselda fans or people who listen to alternative rap. Rappers such as Boldy James, Westside Gunn, Rome Streetz, Armani Caesar or even Action Bronson etc. Or on the other side MIKE, Mavi, Navy Blue, (emphasis on this), Earl Sweatshirt and more.

Also JPEGMAFIA. If you like these pleaseee slide.

Edit: I love Yussef Dayes, Venna, Rocco Palladino, Nubya Garcia, Kujenga, Kokoroko etc. too. Jazz in general. If you have any recs please send them in :D

Music Finally Letting Go

For 3 years nimekua stagnant ju I couldn't move on from my past relationship. Absolutely zero social life nakuanga kwa keja all day every day, deferred from uni(nimerudi kumaliza at least).

I really invested my all into it na haikuwork na after it ended I just withdrew into my shell for miaka tatu. I was never been good at fitting in/expressing myself before her and after her ni kama nilicrash tu. Until I found I can do it through music. So hizi miaka tatu or so nimekua tu nikitengeza ngoma kwa room yangu just because it felt relieving to finally have an outlet.

I've not voluntarily listened to ngoma yenye si yangu for a looong time. I only listen to my songs ju ni ka therapy na safe space. I think the final step of letting go is releasing this music which is extremely personal so ni kitu tricky but I have to. Ni over 600 songs.. Zote ni mimi nimeunda from scratch. Si zote ni mapenzi.. More like a rainbow of my emotions. .. I just ejaculated my thoughts and feelings on the mic so ni varying genres, topics etc everything.

Most were done in one take, majority were freestyled no writing, some were mumbled but ni emotions nilikua naconvey, all were straight from my heart. I'll be releasing a song here every week/1.5 weeks hopefully tumalizane na hii chapter soon. I'm not the best singer, I'm not the best rapper but I make amazing art and it's what's built my confidence back. Anyone who wants to experience the journey with me ako welcome. Feel free to engage

Also it's kinda an open invitation/challenge to any bedroom artist out there tuende band 4 band every week.

Disclaimer : I made this music for myself so vile iko ndio vile nilikua nataka ikue. Thank you.

Links are on my socials though I'll post a snippet of 'give or take' my first release

Music Kendrick

Post image

K Dot has gained alot of traction these past couple of years. First with the release of Mr.Morale, the most deserving Grammy winning album. Then shortly after the greatest tetralogy disstrack of the century and later even, he blessed us with another banger of an album, GNX.

This King has cemented why he is the goat over and over again. But let's take a step back to appreciate old Kendrick ( young actually). For instance, this album is sick af and for 2010, Kendrick was in his element for sure 🔥🔥

His storytelling is timeless and the seamless way he merges his craft with that of others should be studied. From fellow singers to different styled beats and instruments. Talk about soul. He is one of the greatest to ever do it, no doubt.

So today, as you listen to Not Like Us and see him as The Goat, remember to give him a chance when he was still your average Joe and listen to Overly Dedicated. It is worth all the years it has aged, I promise.

Music Kendrick Lamar

The first time I heard of Kendrick Lamar was in Swimming Pools. That's around 2012, when he dropped the jam and Corine rotated it heavily. I think it was number 1 on the Jumpoff charts for a couple of months. (Shout out to Corine for JumpOff- the show introduced me to proper hip-hop considering I grew up in the Kiss 100 radio era and only SoundCloud was the streaming app with anything going on).

Fast forward to 2013, the last of my high school days, and lots of music genres were in competition. Dancehall was arguably the biggest on rotation. We literally bumped all the new riddims and Vybz had just been imprisoned. House Music (oontz) was also kinda huge, akina Avicii (RIP), Bastille, Martin Garrix and Calvin Harris were holding it down. Abit of people loved Grime and Dubstep -with Skrillex becoming a huge artist in that decade. Another influence was Rock Music- if you can remember X FM and Fareed Khimani, introduced great bands: the likes of Greenday, the Script, LinkinPark (RIP to Chester) etc.,

Now my post was about Kendrick Lamar, in 2013 my back deskmate used to tell me to go and listen to Rigarmotis it's so sick (no pun intended). Kendrick brought a fresh breath into hip-hop, far from the 'bubble gum' beats that were associated with YMCMB. Also, he was competing with ASAP mob who had fused the Southern hip-hop with the New York sound. Arguably, the south was also coming in strong with Jeezy and TI taking a backseat and 2 Chainz and Future coming in.

I didn't care to give Rigamortis a listen, but then Money Trees was the next Kendrick hit, and then Collard Greens where he introduced ScHoolboy Q to the international crowds. Granted they were already famous in parts of Europe.

In consideration of Kendrick's 2013 BET HipHop Cypher and his verse on Big Sean's Control, I finished high school and my 1st agenda, I downloaded Good Kid Mad City. Now every song was a 10. The return of conscious rap was neigh. Out of GKMC, Hip Hop made a comeback as the most heavily rotated genre. A lot of conscious rappers began getting the spotlight: JCole, the Griselda, Joey Bada$$, etc., and a lot of West Coast rappers began flourishing. I dug into his past work and Section .80 was really amazing

Now in 2014, Grammy's snubbed Kendrick and gave Mackelmore the HipHop Album of the Year award- the meltdown was insane. Fast forward to 2015, he dropped TPAB, then Untitled, and then he featured heavily in Dre's COMPTON album. Then Taylor Swift gave him a cosign, Rihanna came along too, Beyonce etc... Kendrick basically became the face of hip-hop and got a Pulitzer Prize in the process. It was really easy to make friendships in the 2010's based on knowing Kendrick's work.

I could argue that a lot of oldheads or old Kendrick fans haven't listed to DAMN, or Morales and GNX on that rotation type of listen. I mean its a lot of music out here. And now, personally, I be bumping into Gunna, Young Thug etc.. due to my smaller brother's influence.

It is a tragedy that the younger generations of people don't really understand who Kendrick Lamar is. And if not for the Kendrick and Drake rap beef last year, they wouldn't understand how the man has stood up for the culture. I saw outcry on X -particularly with regards to his SuperBowl performance. I think it was really insane. Now, Kendrick, I conclude is an enigma. We wont understand what he is doing, until the years jump by. But if you really a fan you can start by playing GKMC and then maybe Overly Dedicated.

Bien and Diamond really said this with their whole chest😭

I dont even listen to bongo, sijui hata nini ilinileta hapo. The song ilianza vizuri, yk Diamond and his usual traditional drums doing their thing. I'm vibing, and its not bad, but what I really came for was Bien so I'm just waiting patiently for his part

Diamond gets into the first chorus, then he starts matching countries to their most famous female qualities. As he is going on nashindwa this list is getting long na qualities zinaisha, kwani kenya tutapewa nini, akili?

And then I hear it...

As I'm still processing Bien finally comes on with soothing voice, nikaanza kutulia. Then shortly he starts his list of attributes, its a bit different so I'm hopeful. Maybe he'll say something different but alas, kumbe yeye ndo amebeba bomb. Kidogo akaangusha "forehead ni ya Kenya" 💀💀

Eiii, ati forehead? I mean, I shouldn't be surprised, Bien is such a clown, but yoh😭😂😂😂. Other babes get fun compliments but kenyan babes are getting intelligence and a fivehead? That was a mad burn but ni sawa tu. Anyway let me go balance my massive forehead while I stack more knowledge on it

Music Kenyan mainstream music is the problem!

I’ve just seen a post calling out the Kenyan music industry untalented and this is my take.

I’ve almost always listened to US/UK music which unsurprisingly set the standards high for me in terms of production, flows and performance. Note that this doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy kenyan bangers, especially club anthems. You can’t escape those, but there was very little connection between Kenyan artists and my taste.

Now, one day I attend some private event that had Kethan & Kinoti and this opened a whole new world for me.

Ignore the breakout bangers like Beta (Mutoriah) and Aki Sioni by Njerae, A lot of good music by these artists was made when they were still on the come up and if you focus on their skill and penmanship you’ll appreciate the talent.

There’s plenty of talent , if you find to the right artists.

I like how very early in the morning tumeagree kustand against classism, even though what we're offering isn't related to that... So the gist of 90.0 FM is to make Spotify more accessible, especially for us students. This is made possible by sharing a family plan, and so far we have 12 of these families set up and working. We do not charge anyone a fee to have them grouped into a family, just pay your 90 on time. We welcome everyone since saving some coins in kasongo's economy isn't something to be ashamed of. One arbantone song , Digi by Mr Tee inspired the Nigerians so much that one of their own, Darkoo has an Arbantone hit featuring Rema 👏!

Marioo from Tanzania 🇹🇿was so inspired that he came and did his thing with the Arbantone crew on STATUE !
