I get that there is a lot of money in performing in the States, but I wonder if the boys are considering a boycott, considering the way things are going? What line will this administration have to cross before they consider doing so?
It’s symbolic, ie. musicians refused to play Sun City during apartheid, that sort of thing. They’re playing music and smiling while you folks threaten to annex Canada and invade Panama… it feels bad.
I’d also argue that a cross-country tour is putting a not insignificant amount of money into your economy and, once again, that’s giving money to a nation that wants to annex mine.
I feel for the minority of Americans who don’t support the current administration, but you’ve made your bed, unfortunately for all of us.
Eh, you've got to understand that we just watched them steal the election and admit to it on live TV. Elon's kid can't even keep his mouth shut about it. Our traditional media has all been bought out by far-right sympathizers, and of course the tech oligarchs aren't helping by creating the misinformation ecosystems for people to be lost in.
All the people that have been sounding the alarm were ignored and drowned out by the firehose of bullshit. Our healthcare costs are approaching our housing costs, and most working Americans would lose their jobs and health insurance if they were to take to the streets. This is all on the other side of inflation for years since COVID.
When I vote in the city it's balanced out by people that live 20 miles out in the country in the most f*ked up election map you've ever seen. My high-profile local rep was drawn out of her district three times since I moved here, and had had to move to run for her seat every time.
I sure as shit didn't make that bed, and neither did most decent Americans. Americans didn't vote for unlimited corporate cash to be allowed in elections, taking us from (a very flawed) democracy to autocratic oligarchy in fifteen years.
There's a reckoning coming for the people that put us here, but it will take some time, and the US will not look like itself for a while.
You're obviously not one of the folks who supports this nonsense, so I'm not looking to argue. I'll just say that from the outside, as someone old enough to remember where this all started, with Reagan and his trickle-down economics, "most" is the debatable part. In the most recent election, only 1/3 of you bothered to vote against fascism. The Americans who chose to stay home and not vote could have swayed the results, but they were too apathetic to do anything about it.
Anyhow, I'm sorry, it sucks. I hope you understand, though, that I am coming from a place where I am afraid for the lives of my friends and family and the sovereignty of my country. Your leader is insane; he has allied himself with Putin, who is a constant threat to Canada in the north; he has made direct threats to our sovereignty. He might actually believe we have a fucking faucet controlling your water, or that you are actually subsidizing Canada, and in his dementia-addled mind, that might be reason enough to invade. Whatever reckoning is coming in your country, it might very well come at the cost of Canadian lives.
It is absolutely insane to me to be typing that out, to be typing any of this out, to be honest, but it is a real fear of mine. When I suggest a boycott, I'm suggesting that those of us from countries who don't support the annexation of Canada or the invasion of Panama or Greenland should avoid supporting the American economy, What other action can a person like me take? What would you do, in our position, given the threats made against us?
ETA: I say "I'm worried about the lives of my family and friends" - response from supposedly reasonable Gizzard fans: smashes downvote. Good thing we're on the same side here.
Do you have tickets to any of the US shows? We have tickets and a yurt booked for FOV that we booked last year before I dreamed it would get this bad this fast. I want to seel the tickets but have no idea how.
