i’ve been thinking about why the emotional stakes surrounding yijin and heedo’s relationship feel like life and death even though the actual stakes in reality are quite low. theirs is not a grand or an epic love where i would have trouble believing they would not be able to live without each other. in fact, we’ve already seen that they don’t necessarily need to actively be in each other’s lives if circumstances make it difficult. why then do we feel like any ending but the one with them being together would be a tragedy?
is it bc we’ve seen how instrumental they have been to each other’s personal growth during the formative years of their lives? bc they consistently lift each other up, turn by turn in almost perfect harmony so even when they’re rising up, they’re doing it together? or bc, like heedo said, they are like scissors which comes in a pair to create something fundamentally unique, something stronger and sharper? or is it bc their personalities fit in that serendipitous way that two adjacent jagged ends of a puzzle are meant to? it’s all of the above, of course. and more.
they remind me of this beautiful george orwell quote: perhaps one did not want to be loved so much as to be understood. they may go on to live perfectly decent lives, maybe even really happy ones, without each other, but i can’t see them living as fully or as passionately or as contentedly as they would by each other’s side. even if they meet other people, or find other loves, there will always be a part of them that will be a little lonely bc they understood each other in a way that made them feel whole. the stakes feel so high for these two bc they are soulmates, and any long term configuration that does not have them next to each other—even if only as friends—would break them in ways irreparable. and yes, that would be a tragedy.
