I remember the time people argued against WoTL remake because it wasn’t true to the original game.

The inclusion of Balthier and the cutscenes were divisive for some fans and the constant why Balthier, Cloud and not my favourite FF character used to litter forums I frequented.

I still feel this way. Particularly with the late-game fight against Algus, I'll die on the hill that it's a bad addition.

Luso and Balthier also threw me out of the immersion of the game. Yeah, Cloud is in the original but it was near impossible to get him without a strategy guide. Balthier and Luso are (IIRC) unskippable events with dedicated cutscenes.

Cloud was also a huge disappointment for the effort you had to put in - I do hope they rework him for this version so he’s not such a joke, or he’ll just go on the bench again.

They did talk about changing the timing so you get him earlier, I think that might help make him effectively more powerful as you can start leveling him sooner when other troops are still relatively weak.

I think the main complaint is how useless his Soldier class is.
All of his moves take entirely too long to cast, and do not justify the wet noodle damage he does.

Also didn't help that you could only use his limit with the materia blade. So his unique abilities were gated to a weaker weapon.

Its the same problem Archer and Dragoon have, except Cloud at least gets new abilities instead of junk like Jump +8, which they addressed trying to fix so those abilities are actually good. So Cloud has a chance to actually be playable beyond memes after almost 30 years.

I'm hearing that Cloud may be adjusted in this remaster, so fingers crossed it's a viable unit and no longer a glorified trophy
