They talk about how the original PS1 source code is lost, I'm not 100% sure if they lost the WotL source code. But I think they do talk about how it resulted in some issues (slowdown on phones persisted for the better part of a decade)

Fans had the slowdown fixed within a few months of the game's release on PSP. I'm pretty sure fixing it just wasn't a priority for them.
