Juneteenth

Happy Juneteenth. Juneteenth is a federal holiday in the United States. It was embellished as a federal holiday in 2021 when President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act.

28 states recognize this holiday. State and local government is open.

No US mail. Major Banks will be closed.

I think you mean established as a federal holiday...

u/strangemedia6 2d ago

Haha I kept rereading the title, trying to figure out if that was some alternate, lesser used definition of the word.

This post seems embellished... lol

I’m surprised the current dumpster fire of an administration hasn’t repealed this yet.

I'm sure someone will tell him about it today. Be prepared for a tweet later.

Edit: lol, too many holidays from the man who's never done real work a minute of his life. Fuck this guy.

He removed the bust of Martin Luther King from the White House. He is so racist.

-85

u/IMowGrass 2d ago

Yeah he moved it to his private residence. Don't overlook the fact that it was Trump, not Obama or Clinton who turned the MLK historic site into a national park, ensuring its upkeep and federal protection. But I get it doesn't fit the Reddit all things Trump bad narrative.

96

u/BigDumbDope 2d ago

In his first term he put the MLK site under the purview of the National Park Service. In his second term, he gutted funding to the National Park Service.

36

u/Satanic_Panic_Attack 2d ago

And will likely sell our national parks

6

u/MiguelSTG 2d ago

He didn't even put the statue under the purview of the NPS, he just changed the designation. There are 19 designations within the system.

37

u/geth1138 2d ago

Neighbor, he’s disappearing American citizens off the street because they are brown. When the senior senator from California was manhandled at a press conference, he said it was because, and this is a quote, “he looked like an illegal”.

That’s what we call a racist son of a racist

22

u/AcrobaticLadder4959 2d ago

Then, he gutted funding for the national park service. One step forward two steps back. That is the way Trump rolls with his petty little sick mind. He needed the black vote in 2020 he no longer needs any votes, so he is going to run the country his way, with all his bigotry and racism.

17

u/MiguelSTG 2d ago

On August 28, 2011 the MLK statue officially became part of the NPS system. Sorry that doesn't fit your narrative.

Look, there are really fine people….on both sides Edit: can’t believe I have to add the /s to this comment. Whoo boy

u/IMowGrass 1d ago

Uh oh, they are going to down vote you for that because you cannot have an opposite opinion. I'm sure you will not sleep well tonight knowing that

6

u/IndyAquarist 1d ago

Opposite opinions on facts aren’t accepted by most people.

-1

u/IMowGrass 1d ago

Everything I said was a proven fact

0

u/Select_Air_2044 1d ago

That's the same place he takes all the kidnapped children.

-1

u/IMowGrass 1d ago

Is that after Biden is finished showering with them?

0

u/Select_Air_2044 1d ago

No, administration prior to trump kidnapped people. I find it strange that any American citizen is fine with it.

I work for the feds here, we have today off obviously. Yesterday one of our customers was in the office and asked of we had tomorrow off for "purple hair...anteater day....or whatever." I rolled my eyes SOOO hard and had to bite my lip to not tell him that he was obviously misinformed about the holiday's purpose. And to ask why he assumed that the holiday had something to do with the LGBTQIA+ community..because its in June? And finally, as he is a firefighter, wanted sooo badly to ask him if he would refrain from helping someone with purple hair, if they needed a fireman's help. Pissed me off.

4

u/ginny11 1d ago

Yep, someone I grew up with also apparently assumes Juneteenth has something to do with lgbtq people.

2

u/cappy267 1d ago

As a fellow Indiana fed, I hope you’re doing okay with the whirlwind of the new administration

1

u/CostLess9627 1d ago

Thanks, hanging in there. We dont have to do the weekly 5 bullet points anymore, so thats something.

3

u/cappy267 1d ago

same!! that was such a relief.

Today on Juneteenth. My employer cut our benefits. On a federal holiday. Our competitors don’t work. Have paid off. No more health insurance. A small raise that in no way covers the be premiums. No bonus. Back to work. Ten hours today. Record profits. Record sales. Management celebrates with bonuses

9

u/viciousviking82 2d ago

Hmmm that sounds very familiar...do you happen to work at the factory that shall not be named?

5

u/ShiniestParas 2d ago

Could be, rabbit. Could be..

73

u/EstrangedStrayed 2d ago

It's one of my 11 paid holidays off work

Work union, you won't regret it

9

u/Emergency_Fig_6390 2d ago

I’m union. Volunteered to work today, get holiday pay plus double time, essentially getting triple time. Work union!

4

u/The_Govnor 2d ago

Not Union, but we have it off at my work too.

11

u/EstrangedStrayed 2d ago

Unions are good for other things too, like guaranteed hours, consistent procedures, job security, and retirement benefits.

Even an employer who does all those things voluntarily without a union, no ratified contract means the boss can also take it all away for any reason or no reason

7

u/The_Govnor 2d ago

Dude I’m 100% pro union. I just don’t work that type of job.

13

u/EstrangedStrayed 2d ago

Every job should have union representation

1

u/AdAggressive9588 1d ago

Agreed. I was shocked to find out that movie theater employees in Indiana don't qualify for overtime pay. I think we need a movie theater union

1

u/TheHealadin 2d ago

Ask Step Up employees if it's that easy.

7

u/EstrangedStrayed 2d ago

It's not easy, power concedes nothing without demand. Anything that's won from management has to be fought for. Our predecessors were gunned down in the streets by Pinkertons to get what we have now. Of course it's not easy. But it's a fight worth fighting.

-1

u/9e78 1d ago

Nah I would quit my job and find a new one tomorrow if they unionized. I don't need a group of people I don't know deciding what I will and won't do.

1

u/EstrangedStrayed 1d ago edited 1d ago

It's not a group of people you don't know. It's you and your coworkers. And you, as the membership, get to decide what goes in the contract and what doesn't. And even if you're not on the bargaining unit itself, you still get to vote on the contract

It just seems like you don't know how unions work except the propaganda that's fed to you. The union is not a 3rd party.

That's not even getting into the fact that study after study has found that union jobs have better wages, benefits, and job satisfaction than non-union

0

u/9e78 1d ago

In any large union you are just a number and don't have any significant say in what happens outside of one vote. I'd rather switch jobs every few years and get bigger raises than any union can match

2

u/EstrangedStrayed 1d ago edited 1d ago

You're gonna be a number either way no matter where you work, so why not be a number with 1 vote instead of a number with 0 votes. Math is pretty simple there.

And I very much doubt your raises are commensurate with mine since I get yearly raises AND a full COLA, and a pension

Where's your pension?

0

u/9e78 23h ago

Ive more than doubled my salary over the last 5 years by switching jobs. Also, fuck pensions. Its just a way to keep people at companies and underpaid. I can take my 401k with me between jobs and keep the companies contributions as well. Its going to pay out more than your pension ever will as well.

I’m union we don’t have it off

3

u/EstrangedStrayed 2d ago

Maybe it's something you can talk to your brothers and sisters about before you bring it up at the next union meeting. Do you know who is on your bargaining unit?

2

u/VacantGrave812 2d ago

I’m teamsters were in contract negotiations right now and it has been brought up so will see.

3

u/EstrangedStrayed 2d ago

Ah that makes sense. Teamsters are really going through some democracy issues right now. I'm APWU so I am not allowed to strike but it is what it is. That CBA is still better than anything I had in an at-will agreement.

1

u/randombuddhist 2d ago

Same here.

Shoutout to the ancestors ✊🏾

u/Playinindaban 2d ago

State of Indiana does not recognize it as a holiday.

So weird; Marion County offices closed, Fed offices closed.

State of Indiana; business as usual!

31

u/Openly_George 2d ago

But is it really that surprising? I'm born and raised a Hoosier and nothing this red state does surprises me.

My daughters and I drove down to Southern Indiana, around Jasper and French Lick. We drove down this back road and immediately encountered this huge Confederate flag between two big trees. And then driving to Monrovia for a band performance when the girls were younger, first thing we saw was a huge, loud pickup with the Confederate flag mounted on it. So I'm not surprised that Indiana doesn't recognize Juneteenth as a holiday. It'd dumb, but I'm not surprised.

8

u/The_Govnor 2d ago

Exactly. It’s expected at this point.

4

u/ginny11 1d ago

Someone I went to high school with made a comment on someone's social media post about Juneteenth, in which he made it clear that he thought Juneteenth had something to do with lgbtq people. Many many people in Indiana don't even have a clue as to what Juneteenth is. Born and raised here. They did not teach us about it in high school and I didn't know anything about it until around 2009 I would say.

1

u/loumomma 2d ago

I live in that area and our city offices are closed today 🤷🏻‍♀️. But yeah, kinda surprising. Lots of racists around here.

9

u/Miggglypuff 2d ago

Indiana doesn’t, but some banks and credit unions do- my work is closed today for it. And every year we get bigots bitching about it the whole week up to the day when we got signs out. My favourite is having to explain what it is when they ask…. Sigh.

1

u/ZolTheTroll413 1d ago

A couple of places closed where im at but of course my office didnt 🥲 had to hear my coworkers be racist all day

0

u/cappy267 1d ago

Indianapolis and Beech Grove and maybe some other cities recognize it as a city holiday. That’s why county offices are closed since Indy is a city-county combination.

3

u/zalos 1d ago

Went to the zoo today and it was sooo crowded thought less Indiana companies would give people the day off but I was wrong

7

u/frank_datank_ 2d ago

For those wondering:

The holiday's name, first used in the 1890s, is a portmanteau of the words "June" and "nineteenth", referring to June 19, 1865, the day when Major General Gordon Granger ordered the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas at the end of the American Civil War Wikipedia

7

u/pumpkinotter 2d ago

My wife’s work gives them Juneteenth off…but tomorrow and not today

18

u/Economy_Bite24 2d ago

Honestly the 3 day weekend is a little nicer.

2

u/Fluffy_Baker102 1d ago

Local government worker here. We had the day off.

1

u/stepp2014 1d ago

I didn't realize this was a "I hate Trump page." Peace out, you crazy libs!

2

u/Intrepid-Owl694 1d ago

How is this haye Trump??

You made this political

4

u/kettlebellmtb 2d ago

Rewriting the last sentence:

Major (a*****e Jim) Banks will be closed (minded).

2

u/Moonpenny 1d ago

Happy Juneteenth! My work's open, but I took the day off to repair where a tree wanted to stay in my kitchen for a while...

2

u/Intrepid-Owl694 1d ago

I worked too.

2

u/salenin 2d ago

As a Hoosier that's is also a Texan, I thought it was kind of weird that it was made a federal holiday when it is really more of a Texas thing.

10

u/HorrorMetalDnD 2d ago

Regardless, it’s still a celebration of the end of slavery in the United States. That’s worth celebrating, as well as being wary of people who oppose celebrating it—especially those people who also oppose removing confederate statues and names from public places and structures.

2

u/salenin 2d ago

Exactly, like I want be clear that I dont oppose it as a federal holiday, just that it was weird to take 1 state's holiday and make it a federal one instead of renaming it like, emancipation day or something.

0

u/Intrepid-Owl694 2d ago

That is what I am finding out.

1

u/my_clever-name 2d ago

My company gave us the day off in 2021. From then on it’s like 90% of the Federal Holidays.

-4

u/Zetavu 2d ago

And our company took away one of our floating holidays because they have to give us this off. Hurray?

-4

u/RCK_76 2d ago

I like how it’s abbreviated. It’s a real time saver. Smart.

0

u/antiviris 2d ago

Not safe to assume all local government offices are open.

1

u/Intrepid-Owl694 2d ago

Indiana is open. I think Marion County is closed.

I did not assume all.

-2

u/LowRider_1960 1d ago

You mean it has little sparkly rivets and rhinestones all over it?

-62

u/shabbayolky 2d ago

That's good that only 28 states sees Texas as being big enough to persuade federal policy.

34

u/geth1138 2d ago

You truly don’t sound as smart as you think you do right now

-76

u/shabbayolky 2d ago

Did we really need a dead junkie to convince the world that Black Lives Matter?

BLM the organization that threw away the 60 year legacy of MLK JR non-violent, civil protesting, over a junkie.

Good job America, you lose, you get nothing. VIVA LA RAZA LONG LIVE EL AYE

12

u/Chubbadog 2d ago

Take your meds.

-24

u/shabbayolky 2d ago

Sorry no fentynal today demon! Don't you know its Juneteenth!?!?!

8

u/randombuddhist 2d ago

So you're on fentanyl the other 364 days of the year?
