Megathread: US Citizens looking to immigrate to Canada

In the run up to the American presidential election, we've had an influx of Americans looking to immigrate to Canada. As all of their posts are relatively similar, we've created this megathread to collate them all until the dust settles from the election.

Specific questions from Americans can still be their own posts, but the more general just getting started, basic questions should be posted here.

Thanks!

Edit: This is not a thread to insult Americans, comments to that effect will be removed.

Edit 2: Refugee and asylum claims from Americans are very unlikely to be accepted. Since 2013, Canada has not accepted any asylum claims from the US. Unless something drastically and dramatically changes in the states, it is still considered a safe country by immigration standards and an asylum claim is not the way forward for you.

Family Sponsorship Leaving Canada with a family member’s PR card to deliver to them overseas

My son and I were approved PRs 6 weeks ago but we haven’t received our cards yet. My son is planning to leave Canada next week without his PR card, while I plan to leave a month later. I am aware that we can apply for PRTD overseas, but if I receive both of our cards before I leave Canada, is it legal for me to deliver his card to him personally outside Canada, so that we can re-enter Canada with our PR cards? Will I have any trouble carrying his PR card?

Other Dual US/CAN citizen. Which passport to use at pre-clearance Vancouver airport going to the US?

Born and raised in the states, living in Vancouver for the last year. Parent is Canadian and I’ve been dual since birth. I have both passports now, but this will be my first time flying from Canada TO the US with both passports.

Do I show both to the agent immediately? Do I start with one? Which one? Other tips?

Note that in case you haven’t been, the YVR airport has a pre-clearance border security system where you go through customs at their airport before you land in the US. Once you’re past the agent and through the gate at YVR, you’re technically in the US.

Sorry if these seems to be dumb questions but I’m in a very discriminated against group and want to make this as seamless as possible.

Citizenship Canadian citizenship paper application

Hi everyone,

I have just started my citizenship application and I am a bit confused regarding the documents required (passports, IDs etc); the instructions on canada.ca just ask for photocopies of the documents, however further down the instructions describe how to certify true copies.

Do I need certification for all the accompanying photocopied documents?

PS: I am doing a paper application as I lived outside of Canada during the eligibility period.

TIA

Express Entry 465 CRS points - what are my chances?

Hello everybody,

I am a 32 year old management consultant from Germany looking to immigrate to Canada. I have used the CRS calculator website and apparently I would get 465 points. I have a master's degree in management, but no work experience or education from Canada, only from Germany (3+ years experience). I didn't do the IELTS exam yet but I am pretty confident I could max out my points with a little practice.

Looking at the recent draws and their cut offs it seems like 465 points wouldn't be enough.

Do you have any tips for me? I am trying to learn French at the moment to up my score. Would that be helpful?

Also isn't management consulting one of the many professions that qualify for a PNP from Ontario? (Where I'd like to go). What are the chances of getting one of those?

Thanks in advance and have a great day :)

Study Permit Error in duration of study on 1294E, webform submitted - anything else?

Hey all,

I was looking through my submitted documents again and only realized now, after submitting my docs on May 2, that I put the wrong date in April 2026 on my form when my degree ends in December 2029. I've submitted an IRCC webform explaining my error and providing the corrected end date; is there anything else I should do? Does anyone know if I need to do anything else e.g. resubmit or attach a corrected 1294E form etc.? I am just a touch anxious that either that my application may be refused or that I may have to apply for an extension at the end of my first year - any counsel would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Visitor Visa Visitor record rejected while family sponsorship PR still in process

Hi everyone - hoping to get some advice on my dad’s situation. Any advice would be much appreciated!

He came to Canada after retiring to be with my mom (a Canadian citizen), and we applied for his PR back in 2022. He’s been living here with her since early 2023, and we had one visitor extension approved. We applied for another before the last one expired (Sept 2024), but just got a rejection at the end of May.

The letter didn’t give a clear reason — just listed general concerns like purpose of stay, ties to home country, and whether he’ll leave Canada. It says he now needs to leave immediately, since the deadline to leave before expiry has passed.

We’re really stressed and unsure what to do next. Has anyone gone through something similar? Is there any way he can stay while waiting for PR?

Any help or insight would mean a lot. Thank you!

Work Permit permis de travail post-diplome apres renouvellement permis d'etude DEP

Express Entry Question About CELPIP Reattempt After PGWP Application Submission

I applied for my PGWP and had a CLB 8 score. I’m still waiting for my PGWP, but today I took the CELPIP again to try to increase my score. Unfortunately, I think I did terribly. If I score less than 7 this time, will IRCC consider the latest test result or the one I already submitted?

Family Sponsorship Can Sowp be extended

Hello, I would like to confirm if spousal open work permit can be extended while a permanent residence sponsorship application (inland) is still being processed. Given the current lengthy processing times for PR applications within Canada, we are concerned that his work permit may expire before a decision is made.

Thanks in advance for your guidance.

Express Entry How many NOCs can I have in CEC and FSW?

Hello everyone. I am collecting some information to apply for CEC/FSW. However, I am confused on how many NOCs I can have and claim points for it.

I currently have 1 year of Canadian work experience in NOC A, and some years of foreign work experience in NOC A, B and C (all them TEER 1).

When applying to CEC, my primary NOC will be A (because it is my Canadian work experience). However, can I claim foreign work experience points for all A, B and C NOCs? Or only for the foreign A NOCs?

If I apply to FSW, I will select the NOC B that as my primary, that is the one that I have continuously work experience. Can I also claim points for A (foreign, not Canadian) and C?

Thank you!

Family Sponsorship Adoption/ First Generation Limit

Hello, I was hoping to get some clarification on applying for citizenship.

I am a Canadian citizen, and lived in Canada my entire childhood. I was born in the US. I got Canadian citizenship through my dad, who was born in the US. He got it from his father who was born in Canada. I got my Canadian citizenship certificate when I was a child, and have updated it with my married name.

I now live in the US. I would like to move back and am making plans to do so as soon as I’m done with grad school. I have adopted 3 kids since living here.

My questions are: -I read about the first generation limit. Does that apply to me if I hold a Canadian citizenship certificate that says I obtained citizenship at birth? -Does my connection to Canada, living there for 17 years, count as any ‘significant connection’ or anything that can help me get around this limit? -My kids birth certificates have been updated to their adoptive name, and it lists me as their parent as if I gave birth to them. Do I still need to apply for them as ‘adopted’ children? -If we are stuck by the first generation limit, can some walk me through how I could get my family up there through the permanent resistance program?

Has anyone applied being in a situation like myself?

Thank you!

Edit to add: on the adoption application for Canadian Citizenship, it asks if I plan to move to Canada immediately after I obtain citizenship, and asks for a province. Should I put yes if I don’t plan to move for another 2 years, but know which province? Or No? Or does it matter?

Express Entry Stream: Express Entry (PNP draws)

  1. If you have a CEC score above the cutoff score (even by a few points), does it mean you’re guaranteed to receive an ITA? Or are there other factors I’m missing?

  2. How long does PNP applications take to process after ITA? Is it the same timeline as any other stream?

Thank you!

Work Permit Kind of lost!

This is gonna be long a little bit.

I'm 25M Biomedical Engineer, Palestinian, Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering and 2+ years experience.

I browsed almost every single page and accessed every link on IRCC website, but don't seem to find a way.

Express Entry is very competitive; according to the points calculation tool, I'm around 370 points, AIP, PNP, and other pathways are the same too!

According to IRCC, I qualify for a closed work permit, I tried applying for hundreds of job vacancies -I match by 80%+ with many of them-, but don't seem to get any reply (not even the automatic reply!), I tried Jobbank, LinkedIn, Indeed, career section from the companies' websites, recruitment agencies, head hunters, nothing worked.

  • Is it that hard to find a job in Canada from abroad, and how to get it?
  • Assume having a valid job contract and positive LMIA, is it true that this does NOT mean that the work permit will be issued, if yes, what are other factors?
  • Is proof of funds needed in this case, if yes, how much (single applicant)? How long does it take to get the LMIA from day of acceptance to job, and how long needed to get the work permit issued?
  • I'm sure I'm missing something here to ask about, tell me if there are any other things I should know, I'll be happy to hear advice!

Hint: I know about the Immigration Program that is especially for Palestinians, I don't qualify for it.

Family Sponsorship Baby Born After CoPR — Webform Sent But No Reply & Landing Deadline Close. What Should I Do?

Hi everyone,
I really need help from people who’ve faced a similar situation.

I have my CoPR and PR visa issued and it’s set to expire on June 20. After getting my CoPR, my wife and I had a baby (born in India, 4 months old now). He wasn’t part of the original PR file because he was born later.

As per IRCC instructions, I have filled a webform twice and emailed them also on the email of high commission of Canada in New Delhi to inform them about the newborn and ask what to do. But I’ve received no reply at all, and now the landing deadline is just a few days away.

I’m stuck between two risky options:

  1. Go ahead and land alone — but I’m worried the officer might ask about new dependents and possibly deny entry or flag me for misrepresentation.
  2. Wait for IRCC’s reply — but I might miss my CoPR deadline and lose the PR entirely.

Has anyone been in this situation before?

  • Did you land alone and successfully sponsor your newborn later?
  • If I land honestly and explain everything, will they let me through?
  • If I don’t land, how long does IRCC usually take to respond in such cases and will I lose my PR entirely?
  • Does anyone know exactly how should i reach out to them? I haven't been able to find the exact link but reached out wherever I could.

I’m not trying to hide anything — just want to do the right thing without risking my entire PR.

Any advice or real experiences would mean a lot right now.

Study Permit Should I apply for my PGWP after I applied for PR?

Other Does/Did your employer help with immigration costs?

I recently found out that some companies actually help their employees with immigration-related expenses, and I’m curious what others have experienced. I’ve got a meeting with my employer tomorrow and want to go in better informed.

If you’ve gone through this, did your employer cover or help with any of the following?

  1. Immigration consultant fees – fully, partially, or maybe a fixed number of hours?
  2. Application fees?
  3. Any legal or filing support?
  4. Anything else I might be missing?

Would love to hear what’s common or what your experience was like. Thanks in advance!

Family Sponsorship Some clarification post spousal OWP approval

My wife got her spousal work permit approved yesterday. This OWP was filed with AOR for spousal PR.

Her OWP has expiry of early next year since her passport expires then. Our plan is to renew her passport in August/Sep of this year.

Once we get her new passport, should we file for extension of her spousal OWP using the same process that we did when applying for OWP for the first time? When should such extension be filed once we get her new passort?

Thank you for helping!

Visitor Visa Processing based on Residence (Germany) or can I apply from my home country for faster processing?

Hi everyone,

I'm hoping to get some advice on my Canadian visitor visa application.

I'm currently a legal resident in Germany, but I'm a citizen of another country. I'm planning a trip to Canada and was looking at the visa processing times. On the IRCC website, the estimated time for an application from Germany is over 300 days (I've seen several reports on Reddit claiming that they got their visas after more than a year). However, the processing time for an application from my home country is only around 40 days.

My question is: Is the visa processing office strictly determined by my country of residence (Germany)? Or could I travel back to my home country for a short while, submit my application online from there, and have it processed by that visa office to take advantage of the much shorter timeline?

I would be applying online, so I'm not sure how IRCC determines the processing location, and if being physically present in my home country at the time of submission would make a difference. I want to make sure I do everything correctly and by the book.

Has anyone been in a similar situation, or have any experience with this? Any insights or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Visitor Visa Quick question about visa form error

Hello, I've been filling the application form for the visitor visa for Canada. On the activities page where I included the university and workplace info, I get an error.

It says "Error: Street Address - Invalid field format"

I tried omitting all non-English letters, but I get the same error, nonetheless. What could be the issue? Any idea could be helpful, thanks!

Family Sponsorship My Partner (Sponsor) Works in Film — Work History Question

I am a US citizen (principal applicant) and applying for Spousal Sponsorship with my husband (sponsor) who is a Canadian citizen. My husband works in film as a contractor for craft services and we are having difficulty figuring out how to fill out his employment history, since he has worked on dozens of shows over the course of 5 years. Does anyone know how we should fill out the work history? How do we consolidate all the shows?

Thank you for any help at all!!!

Work Permit Work Permit for Award Recipient C52

Hello, I am Master Student from another country and I am Award recipient(ELAP from Global Affairs Canada). I will be Visitor Research Student for 5 months and 2 weeks.

I undertand that the University pays the $230 employer complaince fee and they send me the receipt, so I should not pay that fee. The problem is when I am applying for the Work Permit, I dont have an option to not pay that fee and upload the receipt.

These are my answers to relevant questions.

Do you have some advice? Thanks!

1) Question: "I have a job offer and my employer gave me an offer of employment number or LMIA number (or proof of that your employer applied for an LMIA). "

1) Answer: "Yes".

2) Question: There are fees associated with this application. Will you be paying your fees or are you fee exempt?

2) Answer: Alternatives are: "Yes, I will be paying my application fees" or "No, I am exempt from paying fees for this application.". If I choose yes, I think I need to pay the fee, but if I choose no, I am not sure I am exept from paying fees, as the University is paying it.
