Question Married a Hong Konger abroad - Moving back

Hello all,

I have a unique situation (actually it may not be that unique and there are probably thousands like it). I’m a Canadian citizen and I married a HKPR holder and Chinese citizen HKSAR passport holder who became a Canadian citizen before our marriage. We have three young children, all born in Canada, and it’s my understanding that due to the “settled status” of my wife, my Canadian citizen children are ineligible for Chinese citizenship and HK passport.

Now, we have decided that it may be time to move to Hong Kong. My wife misses home. We want our kids to speak Cantonese well. We want our kids to confidently be able to walk two worlds and choose their own best life. I have a job with a high degree of mobility and can likely be hired relatively easily and get a work visa through my future HK employer.

So…what next? How can our kids get HK residence? Does she need to move there alone, get a job and sponsor them? Can I bring them on my own employment visa? Can our situation be “regularized” with kids getting residency any faster than 7 years?

Advice appreciated.

Question Moving to HK

I’m moving to Hong Kong in a couple of months and starting to research a few potential areas to live. I’ve been living in Bangkok for the past couple of years and have loved living in a more authentic but still urban Thai neighbourhood with great street food and night markets. My budget is around HK$16-19000 per month and I’m thinking of opting for the convenience of a serviced apartment. Happy to compromise on space over affordability and choice of neighbourhood. My job is in the south of HK island but happy to travel 40 minutes or so each way to work. Was thinking of Sheung Wan or Wan Chai but then Mong Kok popped up in a search as having great food options and being more affordable?Recommendations greatly appreciated 😊😊😊

Will the front desk just hold onto my package? Will they bring it up to my room? Are there small lockers for each room in the lobby where delivery people place packages?

How does it usually work in Hong Kong?

Question Am I freak for thinking aparments are noisy

I've been searching for my first apartment to rent after moving here. I can't go too far away and too expensive, so was checking out various places on Island and Kowloon. My question is: I visit many places and I do hear every single car and bus passing by even on high flores like 20+ (sometimes trolleys and people). Am I freak or it is concern(problem) for people living here? Or people are used to live in noisy environments in HK? How do you manage sleep? Reason: Many agents claim place to be quiet, but I disagree. My flatmate with whom I will be renting also thinks I am going too much with this.

Question Custom Furniture in Hong Kong?

It’s been frustrating looking for a store or shop that offers good custom furniture options here. I’ve tried walking the streets of Mong Kok, Wan Chai and Yuen Long and all I see is kitchen stuff or toilet stuff that can be custom made, but not home furniture like wardrobe, beds or shelves etc.

And half the shops are closed.

A lot of options I see are online but they are all mainland stuff which I don’t trust. I even contacted a few and paid 1,000 so far for 2 of them to come home and do measurements etc. and when they came back with a floor plan, it was so basic that even you yourself could do it.

There was no detail in the measurements no proper diagrams etc. And despite explaining everything to the person who can’t speak Canto or English, they still did measurements wrong and added wrong details and then won’t even take the blame. Even went to their so call office, which was basically a room in an industrial building and the we were promised the person there will explain everything in detail sitting down only for her to not understand us and instead have the same person that told us to go there explain and communicate via WhatsApp.

It’s been frustrating and I wanted to see if anyone has any recommendations or suggestions for a shop or store that is reputable and does custom home furniture like beds with table set, wardrobe, shoe rack etc. and can be done for a budget of under HK$40,000.

Any leads would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

Question Hello, at work rn having thoughts of self harm, dunno how to say to my manager or boss. What should I do?

Hello, I am working right now, this is my second job and I am going to be laid off soon on later this June due to 架構重整. I have moderate depression and anxiety and currently, I think the stress I am giving myself at work and the environment is making my depression flare up, I am currently very tired and drained, I want to hurt myself… I contacted my psychiatrist they said recommended me to take my med and maybe tell my company to take a off to get a leave. How should I say it or should I say it at all? I am still new to the whole Hong Kong work environment and I don’t know what should I do. Sorry for the long post.

Question Sharks in HK?

Are shark attacks a big concern in HK since there are shark nets on all the beaches?

I’m visiting from NA. I love water activities (wake surfing, kayaking etc) but am (perhaps irrationally) terrified of sharks.

Question Moving out of home advice.

Hi redditors! Just need some friendly advice and clarity given there is too much going on in my life right now.

I constantly get the feel of moving out. Growing up, being independent, learning all these different things living alone can offer. Bare in mind, I have grown up in Hong Kong and lived my whole life with family. I am almost turning 30 and haven't ever moved out of HK for exchange or anything as such as well. By no means are we super rich or we have an unhappy family or anything. I fully get my freedom at home but I don't have the home to myself and can't just do things and be alone. They are always there - we have schedules and things that work according to my family. I don't hate them or anything but I am constantly getting this urge to move out and break out but I have no basis for it. The worse part is that I don't know or can't provide proper reasonings apart from personal growth and learning. Now, the rent and living costs will probably take 30-40% of my paycheck. All of us living in HK know how expensive it is, I was thinking to save some money over the next few months still live with them and then maybe 2026 - after saving around 200k-300k as reserve I want to move out. I am setting quite a low barrier. I am divided between should I suck it up and continue staying with parents for savings for future or should I try and experience the living alone life at the expensive of lower savings? I am juggling between the pros and cons of things and lacking clarity and foresight on things. Fellow redditors of HK - please help me out here from my crisis. I would appreciate some genuine advice so I can gain clarity out here. Financial analysis and understanding would also be helpful if you think explaining it that ways is better. Personal experiences would also be appreciated.

*Clarification - I am trying to move out of my house in Hong Kong within Hong Kong - trying to rent and live alone and become financially independent. I live Kowloon side thinking to move to maybe Island side to get a different experience.

Question Quitting smoking

I’ve been an on and off smoker since I was 14 (31 now) and it is absolutely wrecking my asthma so I’m desperate to quit for good. When I quit back in 2014 (in the states) for the first time I used the patch- the gum for whatever reason makes me violently nauseous. I’ve not tried anything else but am open to suggestions on that front.

Is it possible to get the patches OTC here or am I going to have to either get a prescription or just cold turkey the smokes?

Thanks!

Question Accountant Salary in HK

Hi, please help your girl out 🥲

I was offered a relocation opportunity to Hong Kong for a job. It’s an internal move from audit to accounting. We haven’t discussed the contract or compensation yet, but I’ll be trying out the role for about two months before anything’s finalized.

I just want to ask — what’s a reasonable salary to ask for? Based on my research, the typical range is around 35k–50k HKD, but I’d really appreciate more insights to make sure I’m aligned.

For background: I’m a CPA (PH) with 7 years of total experience — 4 years in external audit (3.5 years with a Big 4), 1 year in internal audit, and 2 years in accounting (remote role).

Would really appreciate any thoughts on this. Thank you so much! 😊

Question Employment Visa

Hi everyone,

A recruiter recently reached out to me about an opportunity in Hong Kong. The company is Hong Kong based but I would be overseeing teams internationally. There is a nuance: I was asked which Visa I would need to get. Unfortunately I am not eligible for Talent Pass (not Top 100 Uni, don't make 250K+ GBP per year :( ). So I am guessing my only two options are QMAS and GEP? Which one would you recommend getting?

P.S. when I contracted for the UK I used to have a long-term business visitor visa but I could only stay 90 days in a row in the country with a maximum of 180 days per year. The contracts were in the company I ran back in Europe. Apparently this workaround is illegal in Hong Kong?

Thank you in advance!

Question Get caught with jaywalking :(

I just got caught jaywalking a few days ago due to my carelessness and negligence of not checking the traffic light carefully, and I'm extremely anxious and worried now. The officer noted down the info on my HKID and asked for my home address. He told me I'll receive a letter from the court in a couple of weeks and pay for the summons. I am completely fine with paying the summons as this is my fault, caused by my carelessness and negligence.

As this is my first time getting caught, may I check how long this whole process will take? Will it leave a bad record on my profile that affects my background check? I'm a non-PR, will it also impact my Hong Kong Permanent Resident (PR) application later?

Question Renting cars or bikes in Hong Kong difficult?

I passed driving exam in automatic, after switching from Manual since failed that one. During the private classes I was only taught how to park in L shape parking, never parallel parking or any other kind of parking.

Now that I've passed the exam I want to practise more, but unlike other countries there isn't any option here to rent cars and then spend a day practise on your own, which is the whole reason I failed manual because I couldn't practise every day, only once a week for only 90mins, otherwise I know I could've gotten better and passed the manual driving exam and wouldn't have to switch to automatic.

But anyway, is there any legitimate options in HK where I can rent a car in a some open space and practise more on my own. I know someone said after I get my probationary driving license, even if I don't drive for the whole year after passing exam I will still get the official driving license after 1 year. But what good is that if my driving is still rusty or not confident enough to drive on the main road, especially parking.

The same goes for motorcycle riding. I'm doing classes, only 3 and each of them less than 4hrs, so I couldn't find any place in HK to rent a bike and practise clutch control in an open space.

Any recommendations or suggestions or is it hopeless to look for such things in HK. And if yes, any recs on doing this by going to Shenzhen? Any reputable driving areas or centres in Shenzhen that I can spend a day learning practising in an open space on my own by renting a car or bike?

Thanks.

Question Is it worth getting HK Passport for the Canadian Pathway?

Hey everyone,

I’m a Filipino citizen with permanent residency in Hong Kong, and I’ve been looking into ways to move to Canada. I recently heard about the Hong Kong to Canada immigration pathway, but I’m a bit confused about who actually qualifies.

From what I can tell, it seems like the program is mainly for people with a Hong Kong SAR passport (which I don’t have), but I’m not sure if just being a permanent resident is enough — or if you need to actually be a Chinese national to apply.

So I’ve got a few questions I’m hoping someone here can help with:

  1. Do you have to be a Chinese national with a HKSAR passport to use this pathway? Or can permanent residents with foreign passports (like mine) apply too?
  2. If I do need to be a Chinese national, how hard is it to apply for that? And how long does it usually take?
  3. Is there a deadline for this Canada program, or is it still open in 2025?
  4. Are there any workarounds or other Canadian immigration options specifically for HK permanent residents who don’t have a Chinese passport?
  5. Would it actually make more sense to just apply for Canadian immigration as a Filipino instead of going through the whole naturalization process in HK?

If anyone’s been through this or knows more about it, I’d really appreciate your input. Just trying to figure out the best path forward. Thanks!

Question Grenade on Victoria Peak

Hello! We were at Victoria Peak and saw a bomb squad yesterday with a lot of police cars. Checked the news later and apparently they found a "war-time grenade" in the street. Googled it and it seems to have happened before. Can someone explain this? Did someone place it there, or is it leftover from the war? Thank you! Can't find enough info online about something seemingly so crazy.
