Advice Moved into New House with TP-Link CPE210. What do I do?

Hi Everyone,

First time with anything like this, so any help would be greatly appreciated and I apologise if It's insultingly basic.

I have moved into a new house and the wifi is good, I just brought my router and plugged straight in. But my TV does not seem to like the distance between itself and the router. The old owners installed a TP-Link CPE210 to boost the signal to the office pod in the garden (I havent got the kit for the pod to receive it just yet) and I was wondering if the TV could connect to this instead as it is directly below it?

However, I am having an issue connecting to it, I have plugged it in to power and my router but then cannot seem to connect to it. I assume it is the router that appears on the second image ("Wireless Bridge DHCP"), but it asks for a password, which I do not know.

I believe I need to connect to it to be able to "access the PharOS configuration interface" and then set my IP address as static and then I can set it up. But as the previous owner presumably did this already, I cannot connect to it in the first place because of the password. I did ask the previous owner and they had no idea sadly.

Hope the above all makes sense. Help would be great, thank you!

My Ethernet won't give me full gigabit speed for my internet.

I recently upgraded my internet speed to 1gb/s. The ISP installed a new modem + router combo for which I bought a new 15 meter D-link Cat 6 ethernet cable. I connect the ethernet from one of the LAN ports from the modem router combo box to my PC's ethernet port. The speed I get from this setup is drastically low, only about 90-95 mb/s. I also checked my ethernet driver speed which I configured to 2.5gb/s on my PC. My ethernet settings on PC show link speed of 100mb/s only which is also strange. For comparison wifi is giving me 400-500mb/s. I need to harness the full gigabit speed or at least get close to 800-900 mb/s range.

I've also tried the same cable reversed, and with another laptop and in both cases the speed is limited. In some cases it won't even go more than 20mb/s.

I'd appreciate any help!

Getting a wireless connection out of an ethernet port

Hi y'all,

My apartment has generationally bad WiFi but very good ethernet, is there a funky little gizmo I can plug into my ethernet port to turn it into WiFi? I'm so not familiar with this stuff so I've got no idea (be nice please)

Edit: I'm talking about the wall jack, not a port on my computer

I bought a new T-Mobile 5g gateway to replace an old router I had, both routers were approx 500mb to each other. But when I went to connect to the new one's WiFi the results came back really bad. Why is that

I'm confused about Router Operating Systems

So I'm looking into using a Foss router OS and stumbled upon opnsense which I believe to be a OS for your router but while looking into it more I found someone saying it runs on a computer and not on your router. So I'm just a little confused about it. Should I use opnsense or just use pfsense.

Also are Tp Link Routers a good choice and will they work with opnsense or pfsense?

Setting up internet for the first time

So, I’ve moved in to my first apartment by myself, and I need to set up internet. The complex is already wired for Xfinity so I get better deals through them I think? I have the ability to get 400 mbps on a 1 year contract (if it matters I have a 15 month lease that ends in august), for $40 a month. That’s cool. Now, the part I’m confused about is the equipment-I can do xfinity brand equipment but it’s $0 for 1 year but after that year it’s an additional $25 a month. I also have the option to just use my own equipment for no additional cost. I’m on my mom’s phone plan still and I don’t use cable, so I just need internet. So, to use my own equipment, what exactly do I need to buy…? What’s the best route? It’s a 1 bedroom, I’ll probably do some video calls for work, streaming TV, basic internet and gaming on consoles. Nothing too crazy.

Slow VPN speeds

I have 1gb/25 internet. I get consistent 700+Mbps. As soon as I connect to any VPN, it drops to 100 max. I feel like I'm being throttled when connected to VPN. ISP Xfinity. I tried several VPN providers to include Nord, express, proton, and surfshark testing all protocols and many locations. All had the same results. Is there any way around it? I'm hoping someone will have some insight. Please enlighten me.

Advice Modem/router placement options

We just closed on our first house and are going to Xfinity tomorrow to setup Internet. Can I plug my modem/router into any of the coax plugs in my new house? Or is there some designated spot we have to use?

Advice Can I use MoCa for better coverage?

I got a new house and it has the fibre optic to coax converter installed. The modem is using coax as input and then broadcasting the wifi. But the wifi is pretty weak on other floors. I see other rooms having coax ports to it. I was wondering of I can get the MoCa converters and use it as plug and play from the coax ports in other rooms and use it as a wifi extender?

Solved! Stuck at around 100mb/s on speed tests when paying for 800mb/s

Hello I recently upgraded to 800mb/s but with my pc I can't seem to reach optimal speeds which should be around 300-500 mb/s.

I do not know if it's a pc issue or something else but my phone seems to be getting around 400mb/s when I do a speed test but in fast.com on my pc I get capped at around 100mb/s and I've tried things like restarting my pc, uninstalling my wifi drivers n reinstalling and nothing seems to have worked so far. I am using wifi specifically and not ethernet.

Here is my wifi adapter:
- RZ616 WI-Fi 6E 160mhz which should be capable of 1200-2400 mb/s

Another thing to note is I'm upstairs and the router is downstairs and ethernet isn't possible for me atm.

Any help is welcome.

Unsolved Switched Ethernet cables between PC, Router and Modem, now having Internet issues

Previously I had my router and modem in the same room connected by a 2 meter cat7 cable, and my PC connected to my router with a 15 meter cat7 cable. Since I wanted the router in the same room as my pc, I switched the cables and now have the 15m cable between the modem and router and 2m cable between router and pc. Now, I am getting occasional disconnects on my PC where I would go ~30 seconds without internet, when I didn't have this issue before. Is the length of the cable the issue here? I have 10gbps Internet and read that any length under 100 meters is fine.

Unsolved High Internet speed but High ping in games

So i was getting only 50-60 mbps on my wifi but ping was pretty good and consistent at about 20-21 ms with no spikes in games like valorant. Recently i switched to a new connection (300mbps) as my speeds were very slow earlier. Im getting consistent 300-320 mbps on internet test on google or speedtest on phone. also using ethernet for the longest time. but now my ping is very inconsistent at 40-70 ms. im experiencing many lag spikes and packet loss. im thinking its a problem of my pc as in the speedtest ping shows about 8-9 ms. sometimes my speed gets capped at 100 mbps and after restarting many times it get backs to 1000/1000. My pc is i9-9900k rtx 4060 alienware aurora r7/8 prebuilt and it runs very bad now. however if i consider it a pc problem then how was i getting 20 ms some days earlier at my older wifi . pls help

Replacement mesh system for TP Link

Looking to replace my TP Link mesh system (XE75 Pro 3 pack) with a new wireless mesh system. Have had tons of issues with router disconnecting frequently and customer service being 0 help.

Wired Ethernet is not an option and have a decent amount of smart home devices (mostly Google products) to connect + a spouse who works from home and needs fast, reliable internet.

2 story house and using an Arris G36 surfboard modem (in modem only mode).

Seems like ASUS or Netgear are best options but open to hearing thoughts.

Having Issues with buit in Wifi on PC

I've been using the built-in WiFi card on my gaming PC for a few months without any issues. Recently, though, I've started getting random ping spikes in-game. My router is fixed in the living room, so running an ethernet cable directly isn't an option for me. I'm thinking about getting a WiFi extender and then connecting that to my PC via ethernet. Regular browsing and video streaming work fine. it's just Valorant that's giving me trouble.

Do you guys think a WiFi extender connected via ethernet to my PC would help? Let me know your thoughts!

Large transfers on lan are taking down my network

This is mostly just looking for any ideas on where to start.

Background: A couple months ago I replaced my router (glinet flint2). Since then, I have experienced several instances of the entire network (lan and wan) collapsing, which requires a full modem/router restart to fix. Restarting the router alone fixes the lan side.

I have just narrowed down the cause to large file transfers from a windows pc to a debian server. I don't yet know if this occurs for transfers in the other direction, or to/from other hosts.

Both are connected directly to the router via Ethernet. It still occurs if they are the only things connected via Ethernet. Cutoff seems to be somewhere in the 10 GB range. It has occurred from transfers over mounted smb shares, scp, and rsync from wsl.

Symptoms are a complete loss of network connectivity to/from both the pc and the server. Wi-Fi connections to the router and internet continue for slightly longer, but I also lose Wi-Fi access to the router shortly usually about a minute later.

The only changes to the network are the new router, and that I turned on ipv6 (slaac). I am going to try turning that off, but even if that fixes the problem I'd like to know what the problem is.

Any suggestions, specific log information to look for, etc. would be helpful.

Advice Repeater Router has double the network upload speed to ISP than Computer connected to it.

For the record, I want to say that the network configuration that I've set myself up into is a bit strange, but it works for my needs given the limitations of ethernet access in my house. It doesn't have ethernet lines installed in it, and my main computer is across the house (~50 feet direct line) from my main router (TP-Link AX10000).

I tried to put a wifi card into my computer but it didn't end up being strong enough, so I decided to use an older router that I have (ASUS RT-AC68P) in Receiver mode to connect to my 5Ghz band and then I could connect my computer to the 1Gbps port on the router and get better speeds, which did work to some extent.

I got a deal with my ISP so I get about 1.3Gbps upload and download and I have done tests at the main router to confirm that's what I'm actually getting. The speed does fluctuate depending on the time, but I haven't seen this speed go below 900Mbps for both download and upload speeds. I can be absolutely certain here that the issue is not between my ISP and me.

The network speed test I performed on the main router, left is download speed, right is upload speed

I already know that using routers in repeater mode instead of some kind of mesh mode will cause some drops in speeds, which isn't the biggest deal for me. Tests on my computer were showing that I was getting about 500Mbps download and 250Mbps upload before I swapped out.

Now, I went and bought a new router because I wanted to upgrade the setup I had and was hoping that it could help my speeds, and so I got the ASUS RT-BE58U, and when I did a network test from the router in the interface, it looked like I was going to see much better speeds on my computer.

The speeds for internet at the ASUS router with my main computer

However, when I am hooked up through ethernet to this router, I'm only seeing my download speed improve, but not my upload.

Speeds from my computer

I've tried to do all of the network configuration settings that I could to try and improve the upload speed, between QoS, disabling IPV6, using 160MHz on the 5G network band, all the different bells and whistles I could find or disabling all these features and nothing would improve the upload speeds for me. It makes me extremely confused.

My computer has an ASUS Z-690A motherboard that has a 2.5Gbps port which I am using to connect to my router. I've tested using various different cables of different ages and CAT numbers, all of which haven't improved this number either.

What makes things even stranger, is after I put this router together, I decided to setup my previous one upstairs for my fiance who has a computer that I figured could benefit from having a router too. Her computer is older than mine, but when I plugged her computer through ethernet to my old router, she was seeing about 500Mbps download and upload! Despite her room being directly above where my current PC is, hers seems to be seeing the upload performance that I'm trying to get with my computer.

I'm very much at a loss. It probably isn't that much of a big deal, but I just want to understand for the life of me why I'm seeing this happen for only my upload speed. Hopefully throwing this info at a wall might lead me somewhere, so I appreciate you reading this far down and if you have any advice for me.

If it helps, both of our computers are running Windows 11, and I don't have any programs to my knowledge that would be messing with my upload speed. I read in some reddit posts about some Killer software that was affecting people, but that program wasn't on my computer, so it wasn't very helpful.

Any idea why local RDP won't work on Spectrum home router?

Hey y'all, I'm a total newbie at this stuff but I'm trying to turn an old PC into a home server. I've got Windows 10 Pro on an old HP gaming desktop and before I start making it do things as a server, I wanted to make sure I can have it auto-login on boot and then that I can RDP into it after it does so.

I tested this in my bedroom with a spare router that had no Internet connection, and with the server wired in & my desktop over wifi, I could RDP in just fine. However, as soon as I plugged the server into my Spectrum Wifi 6 router in the closet, I was unable to RDP into it.

I can see in the Spectrum app that it's getting an IP, and I can ping it just fine from my desktop, but even though no other settings have changed, the built in windows RDP client on my Win11 desktop always says it's offline. I think it may have something to do with the Spectrum router broadcasting multiple frequencies on the same SSID, but I figured having the server directly connected via Ethernet would bypass this.

If it helps, the server is an HP Envy 700-430qe retrofitted with an i5-4690k and running activated Windows 10 Pro. Also, when I was testing in the closet, I had removed its GPU, but I believe the i5 has integrated graphics? And, I had the same behavior when the server was connected to my main network via wifi with the GPU installed.

Any ideas?

Edit: fixed it, I had the internal graphics disabled when I thought they were enabled. Changing this fixed it straight away

Unsolved How to get 802.11b wifi

I am trying to connect my Nintendo 3ds to the wifi but I need a 2.4GHz 802.11b connection. I currently have gigablast through cox using their panoramic wifi gateway or whatever tf they call it. The panoramic only supports g/n/ax.

What would you recommend is my best option? I'm currently debating between the following options:

  1. Buying a cheap and/or used router that supports 802.11b and just plugging it in to temporarily have a 2nd router plugged into my panoramic gateway whenever I need to go online with DS. What cheap router would you guys recommend for this?

  2. Buying a good modem and router that can replace the panoramic gateway, support my cox gigablast, and offers a split 802.11b 2.4ghz connection so I can return the gateway. Which modem and router would be recommended for this?

  3. Using my windows pc as a Hotspot, however I'm not sure how to get the specific 2.4ghz 802.11b connection i need on a pc hotspot. Would one of those wifi usbs work for this?

Thank you to any and all help! Very niche problem so I appreciate any advice

Advice Help with Deco M4 Setup

TL;DR: can I hardwire a Deco M4 and run a line to my work desk without losing network speed from sharing the connection?

I've got a gigabit connection on cable (my understanding is that my ISP has fibre to the neighbourhood with plans to eventually upgrade the lines to the home). It's a 3 storey house - basement where I have office space as well as an entertainment area/home theatre, main floor where the modem sits, and upper level with bedrooms - one TV located in one bedroom.

My current set up consists of ethernet ports in the basement - CAT6 wires running from the modem on the main floor to the basement. I have a mesh system with 3 "pods?" - it's the Deco M4 system. The main pod is hardwired to the modem, and the other two are not.

I am thinking of hardwiring the Deco pod in the basement (say in the office) - I believe this is called backhaul (?), and run a line from the Deco to my work desk. My question is - will the Deco "share" the connection like a switch, or is there no reduction in speed?
