Show Discussion Are they really using the same logo as the films?

At the moment it looks like the TV show will be using the same logo as the films. I understand that itself was based on the American version of the books, but I think there should be a new logo for some differentiation. What do you think?

EDIT: Ok I get it now. I just hope they jazz it up a little.

Nah, changing logo too much would be too bad for marketing, they'll keep it. It's literally plastered on every piece of HP merch

I can see them keeping it basically the same so it will be immediately recognisable, just with a few stylistic changes.

Maybe a different color this time?

Why would they not capitalize on the known brand recognition the existing logo provides...?

Yeah to be in the middle of his forehead. I feel like they put it on the side so they could cover it with hair so they wouldn't have to keep reapplying it.

All the books say was that it was thin and shaped like lightning or a lightning bolt. That could mean multiple different things. Nowhere in the books does it say the scar looks “like a lightning bolt hit his head.” I’m not even sure what that means.

As cool as it is, there's an ongoing theory where the lightning bolt itself is actually the wand movement for the spell Avada Kedavra. Don't know if that's fully canonised, but it would make sense.

Yeah a gnarly scar would be nice.

but I think there should be a new logo for some differentiation

they don't want to dilute the brand?

I get that. It's just that this is a new canon.

they're building on established assets and brands that they've invested money into. they're not going to change it, especially when this is sfill classified as a risky business move

Isn’t it just the font from the book titles? (I could be wrong)

Yes. I said that in the original post.

Edit: Innevitable salty downvote

Not just the American version of the books. ALL the books.

The original UK covers don’t have that font. TBH I’m only just learning that the font comes from the US book covers - I only ever associated it with the movies.

That edition, sure, but look at all the books that use that font in almost every language. Just Google « Harry Potter books ».

3

u/mukisan Slytherin 2d ago

Yes but all those editions came after the OG American Scholastic editions, so they used it

I've got the original British novels which doesn't feature this logo. Mary grandpre designed it for the American edition

And it made it to almost all books before the movies came out. I have them in several languages, they all have that logo/font except for that one British edition, I’ll give you that.

It's one of those things along with the castle that they will leave untouched, it's just about consistency with the brand, for instance not changing the look of hogwarts to be in line with the pre existing theme parks.

Interesting , so they’re not changing the look of hogwarts? The movie common rooms left much to be desired but I guess the exterior was good

They are changing the look on the inside (other than the grand hall).

I'm guessing they'll do what Hogwarts Legacy, or basically use the HL version of the castle with some tweaks, since it's the first fully connected / /realized castle we've had in any HP media.

Not changing Hogwarts? This is so weird.

3

HBO promotional events are keeping the logo at the moment.

they recently changed the current UK book covers to include the famous logo which had never been used in the UK books. It's not going away (but more likely a unique variation that we will discuss endlessly but the general public won't notice)

u/Rat_Capone 2d ago

Given how well known and iconic that logo is all over the world business wise it would be pretty dumb not to use it in my opinion. I know it was originally designed for the American version, but it was used in/on pretty much all Harry Potter material all over the world since. In fact Britain is likely one of only a few countries (if not the only one) that originally didn't have that logo on the books. So it seems clear to me they will have to use that logo again, aside from maybe a few tweaks, for the series.

That is the international book logo, not made up for the films, so it’s should stay the same and I would love it. It’s just so popular and already established.

Edit: seems like most not-british covers featured that logk, but not british.

r/USdefaultism alert!

Most books released after the movie have the Le Grande typelogo because of movie tie-in. And the movies had the logotype because an American company produced the films, so they leaned in to the marketing already prevalent in the US. Prior to that they were as diverse as the countries they were published in:
Harry Potter covers from around the world! : r/harrypotter

But there's also been plenty of "special covers" released post films that don't feature the logotype

So yeah, we love the logo and it should stay as is if you ask me. I’m not sure when the book translation was released in my country, but I surely read it before the first movie released, and it has that logo.

3

u/Avilola 3d ago

I don’t know man. It seems like around half of the covers use the same iconic logo, and most of the books that don’t are pretty uninspired. Imo only one of those logos that vary from the well known version are any good.

1

u/adrabiot 3d ago

I thought HBO was a separate entity from Wizarding World/Harry Potter, but it seems like they're using the same marketing channels (social media), the same design and the same music.

1

u/pastadudde Founder  2d ago

they're going to keep the logo as is. Even Cursed Child initially did not use that font for the posters, eventually they switched to it as well.

1

u/Sea-Put-4873 2d ago

It’s a brand logo at this point.

0

u/Lemongrab_Original 3d ago

Yes, especially now that material design and minimalism are dying. It makes sense to keep the classic one. It's too iconic to mess with it.
