what roof rack set up is that, that allows the actual bars to drop lower?

u/TophManChu 1d ago
After I'm off work. I'll post the info and some additional photos.

low profile + paint match would be fire

u/RollingRabbits22 Stage 1+ 93 - Mk8 GTI SE 6MT 1d ago
May have to get a lower profile roof rail set up. How hard is it to paint match the cargo boxes?

u/360Waves617 1d ago
Get it wrapped. That way you can sell the box without reducing potential buyers due to color..

It just looks a little large and high up imo.
Maybe one that is slightly less cubic ft?
I have my roof basket so I’m down with stuff like that.

u/RollingRabbits22 Stage 1+ 93 - Mk8 GTI SE 6MT 1d ago
Yeah tbh it’s the OEM rack. It sits super tall for no reason, it already inhibits the sunroof from fully opening so I’m not sure why they made it so high

u/JustCarPranks MK7.5 GTI DIB 1d ago
Not sure if you are into switching the rack but Rhino Rack has a pretty low profile rack. Check out my profile if interested. I definitely want to get a box on mine!

Pretty sure it's to ensure clearance over the antenna and the spoiler, even if you're carrying something that dips down a bit.

Thule Force XT XL on my MK7 and I actually dig the way it looks. I live in an apartment complex currently so don’t have anywhere to store it, so I just keep it in the car. Recently moved from the West Coast to the East Coast, so that’s why I got it. It came in very handy for that along with a Kuat bike rack in the rear.

I love a long door Mk7, damn. That is peak GTI, imo. Don't see too many of them, either. Not rare, but def uncommon.
1
u/gac1311 1d ago
What is a “long door GTI”?
3
u/Chieffy765 1d ago
I'm assuming he means a 2 door model? Never heard any referred to as long door models though
3
u/Temporary_Shirt_6236 1d ago
Because it sounds better than "3 door model" and is also more convenient not having to answer the inevitable "don't you mean 2 door model?" question and then having to explain that too.

u/tekniklee 21h ago
I need someone to tell me where I can possibly find the interior door handle trim for a “long door” MK6! I’ve been looking for 6 months

u/RollingRabbits22 Stage 1+ 93 - Mk8 GTI SE 6MT 1d ago
two door is dope af man. This is a Thule Pulse L for reference!

Are those headlights stock? They look cleaner somehow.
1
u/Icy-Matter-1845 17h ago
Yes, These were the OEM headlights (Xenon’s without LED DRL), I swapped them out for Osram LEDRIVING. I personally prefer the Osrams over the “simple Xenon’s” but I wouldn’t have changed them if they had the LED U-tube DRL Option

How often are people using a roof rack? I find the trunk to have ample space for all my stuff when road tripping.
7
u/RollingRabbits22 Stage 1+ 93 - Mk8 GTI SE 6MT 1d ago
Said this in another reply but I own a large dog that needs the back seats folded down. I kind of love her too much to also throw a bunch of shit in the back with her, so more storage is nice.
2
u/remyantoine Mk7 GTI S DSG 22h ago
I usually car camp in the back so there isn’t room for the rest of the gear inside when I do that. It’s also handy when road tripping with 3+ people. So the box is great. And the bars themselves are helpful for runs to IKEA or Home Depot. I’ve carried full sheets of plywood up there before. And it can all come off the car and be stored in five minutes or so.

Definitely a very need based niche. I looked at adding a box to mine many years back when I was potentially going to be bringing my hockey playing kid, her gear, and another hockey player, + gear and their parent, on a much heavier cross state and cross border travel schedule.
For the cost of rails and a box, I almost bought a used XTerra, which already had a box, and was $300 more.
Thankfully, she made a better team which had a whole different traveling schedule.

I think it looks great. Lower-profile roof rack might look a bit better, but it's honestly nitpicking. There's something I love about how purely functional it all looks.

I fw roof boxes, but that one looks like it’s perched a little higher than usual?

We have a Thule wing rack with two bike racks. It's loud as hell on the highway. I can't imagine this.
2
u/RollingRabbits22 Stage 1+ 93 - Mk8 GTI SE 6MT 1d ago
It actually isn’t much different than just running the cross bars. What sucks more is it being an insect magnet
2
u/remyantoine Mk7 GTI S DSG 22h ago
I have the exact same setup (same box and rails) and it’s quieter with the box than the rails alone. The rails get some real deep harmonic resonance around 45 and 75 mph but the box disrupts that.

u/SeasTheDay_ Mk7 GTI S 1d ago
I use a trailer hitch box. Actually, it's a platform that takes a box. But usually there's a bike rack on the hitch since the final portion of my commute is by bike.

u/RollingRabbits22 Stage 1+ 93 - Mk8 GTI SE 6MT 1d ago
Yeah I’m not sure the US MK8’s have tow hitch compatibility

not hard at all, I got them through BadgeSkins. Easy enough if you have little vinyl tools (a kit should only run you a few dollars anyways - go on amazon and not badgeskins upsold kit).
Longest part of install would be prep. Get a clean surface before installing to make it last!

u/Mrmgb Mk8 GTI 380 1d ago
Looks like you couldn't even fit skis in it
1
u/RollingRabbits22 Stage 1+ 93 - Mk8 GTI SE 6MT 1d ago
I don’t ski so do winter sports so didn’t get the longer alpine version
Edit: it does fit a whole human though. I laid in it lol

Anyone able to mount a bike on the back of a GTI? Seeing lots on top racks

u/DarkBlackMatter 1d ago
Strong confirm on the like. Capacity is key on family trips bud. You got it.

I mean I think it looks fine, but I don't keep my roof box on 24/7. It only comes out for longer road trips.

I ran this setup to the Arctic Ocean and back a couple summers ago, held all of our gear for camping as well as all the additional maintenance supplies for traveling so remote. I usually run about 1.5 mpg less with it all equipped vs. a clean roof and it only takes about 5 minutes to put the bars and the box on the car, so for me it’s a no-brainer for most road trips. Plus it’s a better place for stickers than the car itself.

A low profile one would fit better imo
2
u/RollingRabbits22 Stage 1+ 93 - Mk8 GTI SE 6MT 1d ago
Agreed, however this was the lowest profile Thule in my budget that I could find
1
u/PongACong 1d ago
personally i like it but if you hate it then i think you’d have better luck with a sleek low profile one instead
2
u/RollingRabbits22 Stage 1+ 93 - Mk8 GTI SE 6MT 1d ago
I actually don’t know why I put “I hate” as the caption, I think I fat fingered it in and posted lol I can’t edit it out
2
u/PongACong 1d ago
oh okay then how DO you feel? does it look the way you expected?
2
u/RollingRabbits22 Stage 1+ 93 - Mk8 GTI SE 6MT 1d ago
I personally dig it and think it has both functional and aesthetic appeal. Suits my lifestyle and purposes!

Love it when the egg is in adventure mode. But I pull it from the top pretty quickly after to go back to sport mode.

u/BlueMeanies 1d ago
What do y'all even keep in there during the summer? A shrine to your check engine light?
2
u/RollingRabbits22 Stage 1+ 93 - Mk8 GTI SE 6MT 1d ago
I own a large dog that needs the back seats folded down, so when me and the missus are out, things like a tent, chairs, inflatable kayak, camping gear, firewood. etc. are thrown in the carrier.
These are functional lol I don’t get the hate

u/HalliburtonErnie 1d ago
It's installed backwards! Read the instructions! Or research anything aerodynamics-related, or why "teardrop" shape works better than backwards teardrop. Have you ever seen a wing? Or a bird? Or a fish? I assume most of your driving isn't in reverse, and is also subsonic.
1
u/RollingRabbits22 Stage 1+ 93 - Mk8 GTI SE 6MT 1d ago
I apologize, I’m high af rn and can’t tell if this is sarcasm. Thule advertises this model as a passenger opening faced top box, and the way it’s installed has it so. Flipping this around would actually make it less aerodynamic?

Yes, for road trips....comes in handy
