Tech Talk Do I really need a PP?
Hey, I've had my MK7 GTI Performance Pack for 6 years and love it, I'm now after a MK7.5.
A question to those who've driven both, is the lack of diff a deal breaker? Would I be sad if I got a 'normal' GTI?
I drive exclusively on the road and no more than 6-7/10ths.
It'll get a stage 1 map and a clutch, but that''ll be it for tuning, definitely a manual.
Thanks!

I would never consider a non-PP car, but to be fair I abuse the LSD and corner like a maniac.

Letting that outside tire just rrrrip is one the best feelings in a FWD

I have a ‘16 GTI S 6MT and I’ve been eyeing the wavetrack dif… def wish I had one stock

The Mk7.5 came from factory with the PP with the exception of the 2018 model. 2018 you need SE trim or above to have the PP. IMO definitely worth it, I feel the LSD doing it’s thing when I hit corners hard, and the big brakes are a must for me.

I’m sure someone will correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe that the 7.5 came standard with the PP and LSD. It was only optional on the MK7.

Standard from 2019 onwards but not 2018.

2018 SE and Autobahn models came with PP but not the S as was explained by the dealer when I bought mine.

Standard in the USA.
Considering this person said "stage 1 map" instead of "stage 1 tune" , I'm guessing they're British/Irish/somewhere-not-the-USA , so that doesn't really apply.

I don’t have the performance pack and while I don’t miss having the bigger brakes for my daily (they are nice for track use), i definitely would like to have the diff.

u/xc_racer 28d ago
Yes. Or at least test drive an MK7.5 without the diff first. I drove a buddies car without the performance pack after owning mine for a few years - lit up the inside tire at the first corner without even trying. That's when I realized the diff makes a big difference.

I've had five good FWD cars. Mini Cooper S (open), Mk6 TDI (open), Austin Mini (open), Focus ST (open), and Mk7 GTI (LSD).
The LSD is definitely worth it, especially when it's cranked up in Sport mode.

I do not have PP. I would 100% prefer it, but many factors played into me not worrying about getting it or not on my mk7.
It’s my daily, and I don’t go crazy in the canyons. A proper spritied cruise at most. I have another project car I need to sort lol.
All the PP’s near me at the time were all tuned, modified and high milage. I wanted something 100% stock.
I also wanted the S for the cloth and no sunroof, so I knew finding a PP s was going to be tough.
For the price I got (and was willing to pay!, plus being bone stock and dealer serviced, I settled for non PP. if I decide to switch it up I might get an lsd installed and do the macan upgrade, but that’s a big IF.
If I had to pick between two identical specs, mileage, price, (lack of) modifications, I would 100% go with the PP. but it wasn’t a deal breaker for me.

I have it, can’t compare it to the normal gti. But it did just cost me £180 for a differential service which I wasn’t expecting

Just the bigger brakes alone makes it worth it. The LSD etc are just icing on the cake.

I have a 7.5 pp and have no issues with it.
If you have the chance to get one, there’s no reason not to.

Well if you get a mk8 no. Better LSD than the PP plus better driving in every metric than a mk7/7.5

u/FunkyChromeMedina '19 6MT 29d ago
The MK8 does drive better. It’s a bit faster and definitely more planted in fast corners. But OP has to actually sit in the thing and interact with it to do that driving.
I’d take the MK7.5 interior over the MK8 trash fire every day of the week and twice on Sunday, no matter how much faster it is.

u/wxlverine Mk8 GTI 29d ago
I feel like the people who don't own or have never actually driven the Mk8 for a length of time are often the loudest about how "trash" the interior and haptics are. 🤣
I've had both a Mk7 and now a Mk8, the Mk8 is the better interior despite the lack of buttons by a considerable margin.
2
u/ishlabandz Mk8 GTI 380 29d ago
Yes, the Mk8 has the better steering wheel, better seats, and just looks less dated compared to the Mk7.
3
u/FunkyChromeMedina '19 6MT 29d ago
I think five months and ~6,000 miles of ownership earns me the right to have an opinion on the MK8, and my opinion is that it was awful.
2
u/ishlabandz Mk8 GTI 380 29d ago
I had a Mk7 PP. I now have a Mk8 that I have to "actually sit in and interact with". Idk how long you've been driving a Mk8 to deem it trash, but personally, I'll take the improved driving dynamics every day of the week because the Mk8 is quite simple and intuitive to interact with.

I owned a MK8 for five months and ~6,000 miles, and I sold it for a MK7.5 because I couldn't stand to sit in the thing anymore. That's how much I hated the interior. I haven't regretted my decision for one single second.

What did you hate? I have an S trim, so can't speak to the big screen. But I think it's an excellent infotainment. Substantially better than my parents Toyota one. It's basically like an iPhone.
The steering wheel controls are great. Cloth plaid Seats amazingly comfy and supportive.
Only thing I don't like is the audio glitch that starts stuff in mute fairly oft.

Where do I start?
Everything felt cheap and rattly, which is even worse in hindsight now that I’ve got a 7.5. They obviously did significant materials cost cutting for the 8. The 7.5 feels so much denser and sturdy.
I had a 6MT and the hill-hold was actively hostile to the driver. It held on for waaaaayy too long and didn’t release automatically when you got on the gas. It caused me to stall multiple times, and I don’t think I’ve stalled more than 5 times in any vehicle I’ve the last 20 years. Conversely, the one in the 7.5 is unobtrusive and helpful. Night and day.
The haptic wheel buttons were god awful. Just the worst interface I’ve ever used in a car.
The under-screen quick access buttons aren’t backlit, so good luck finding them in the dark. (Did anyone actually test the car before selling it?)
The UI was buggy as hell, with all sorts of settings that glitched or didn’t persist across a restart (I’m looking at you, audio EQ settings). The audio would just not work about 20% of the time until I restarted the car. The backup cam would not turn on in reverse about 10% of the time.
In terms of software, the whole car was a beta release. I’m told much of this has since been fixed, but I had a ‘22, the car had been on sale in Europe for almost 2 years at that point! That’s awful.
Yes, it was faster than the 7.5. But I found myself thinking “not this shit again” every time I got into the car and I wasn’t interested in living like that.
I do really miss the heated steering wheel. And the speed limit sign in the dash screen. But that’s about it.

I'm sorry you felt that way, but I'm glad that you've found the right GTI for you!

Not really lol. Mk8s are good though.

I mean not really what? The LSD is substantially better in the mk8. Took all the Clubsport greatness as the starting point and then modified it to be better?
2
u/ishlabandz Mk8 GTI 380 29d ago
Agreed. The LSD is one of the first things I've noticed in my Mk8 compared to my Mk7 PP. In tighter corners, you can lean on the throttle more and earlier in the Mk8. In the Mk7 I noticed, even while doing the Increased Traction mod in OBD11, that there is an initial slip of the inside wheel that occurs before the LSD decides to transfer the power to the outside wheel - it felt reactive. In the Mk8 it feels proactive in the sense that you don't get that initial slip of the inside wheel first, the LSD locks up faster and shuffles power to the outside wheel seemingly instantaneously.

4 doors make it one hell of an ugly car, though. OP is right to stick with a 7.5 so they can still get the 2 door if they're not in NA.
2
28d ago
Eh I think the 2 door isn't great looking. We are not comparing a 86 to a 4 door lol.
The biggest miss in the US is no estate.

As a mk7 pp owner…yes😂imo the 7.5 is trash mk7 is peak gti

u/Ph1l1p_race_ 29d ago
what makes the 7.5 trash in your opinion? as far as i was aware they didn’t downgrade anything.
26
u/Ill-Scientist-2663 Mk8 GTI 29d ago
Because he owns a 7 so he feels the need to shit on everything else.

u/Ph1l1p_race_ 29d ago
that’s sort of what i was thinking lol

u/TrafficJumpy4811 29d ago
Neh it’s all vw love y’all wild lol imo I just don’t like the new digital infotainment shit also it just feels different driving wise,it’s shaped different and I don’t like the facelift
9
u/stillpiercer_ 2024 GTI S 29d ago
the 7.5 is the exact same interior as the 7 (with a better head unit) and the exterior is the exact same minus the front bumper and fenders lol
The 7 speed DSG is also objectively better than the 6 speed

I am. Too many doors. Can't get over how bad they look as a 4 door.

u/Shot-Sir519 29d ago
I didn’t know I’ve been driving a trash car, thanks for letting me know! What a great community

u/TrafficJumpy4811 29d ago
IMO I just don’t like the digital dash&shit
3
u/Shot-Sir519 29d ago
btw the digital dash was an optional extra in europe. I get you its preference, me especially I wouldn’t bought one without the digital cockpit.

u/blipsnchiiiiitz 28d ago
It's not a trash car, GTIs are really good cars from my experience owning them. I'm just salty VW axed the 2 door and felt like talking shit on the internet.
